SSX On Tour unveiled

The PSP gets piste.

Electronic Arts has revealed the first details of what we can expect from SSX On Tour, the first PSP instalment in the classic snowboarding series.

According to US website GameSpot the game will feature 15 tracks and more than 100 different events, with a similar selection of modes to those available in the console titles.

However, there will also be an interesting new twist on the Quick Play mode which means that your race results will count towards your career progress. You can also try your hand at skiing as well as snowboarding, and even put competitors from the two disciplines up against each other to see how they compare. Four player Wi-Fi races are promised, too.

As in previous games you can choose whether to play as a male or female character, but this time you can add skins which alter not only their appearances but their skill levels. In total there are 40 skins, 10 skis and 10 snowboards to unlock, along with a few surprises.

One element unique to the PSP is Pocket Traxx - a new feature that allows you to listen to the soundtrack even while you're not playing the game, and which is becoming a standard addition for all of EA's PSP titles.

SSX On Tour is due out this autumn in the US, so keep your fingers crossed for a UK release by Christmas.

Skis versus boards sounds interesting, would loved to have seen full blown skiing in Amped on the Xbox

    Screenshots ?

As for 'Pocket Traxx' (god I hate that title).

This will be a welcome addition provided the 'traxx' in question are as high a quality as SSX3 and nothing like Burnout 3.

It's weird how good the music was in SSX 3 when the music in Burnout 3 was ear-poppingly awful. Still, Burnout 3 is fantastic with custom soudtracks.

SSX On Tour better have music that syncs itself to your movements in the game, it was such a brilliant feature in SSX3.

Traxx will be quite useless I imagine, since it will probably require the disc to be spinning = prohibitively large energy consumtion.

Good to see them playing to the PSP's strengths.

I did like a couple of the songs in Burnout 3...

What I want to know is why don't some PSP games let you do custom soundtracks? Surely it can play MP3s off the memory stick as easily as the Xbox can off the HDD.

" I did like a couple of the songs in Burnout 3... "

I agree there were a few nice tracks in the mostly 'orrible mix. The thing I missed was the scaling music of BO2, which added in extra layers your burnout increased. That was very effective and would have helped I think. Though I turned the tunes off in BO3 almost immediately and never looked back, so I guess the other SFX were more than capable of filling the gap.

Unfortunately, Burnout 3 wouldn't let you totally turn off the songs you didn't like. I might have liked a few songs on the soundtrack but since the game wouldn't let me listen to just them, I gave up and started putting some of my CDs on my Xbox. And EA did let you turn songs off in Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2.
