GTA: Chinatown Wars on PSN today News

PlayStation 3 News by Robert Purchese

22 October, 2009

The excellent Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is this week's headline attraction on the European PlayStation Store.

Our praise-laden review should convince you that £29.99 is an asking price worth parting with, unless you want the UMD, which is inevitably cheaper.

Elsewhere, you might like to try demos of NBA 2K10 or Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron (PSP). Plus, there's new content for Midnight Club: Los Angeles and Cross Edge.

There's only one extra PSP Minis game, Red Bull X Fighters, today - and it costs four quid.

Of the discounts, Riff: Everyday Shooter is most alluring, at £3.99/€4.99.

Over to music watch, and Queen invade Rock Band while some rockers I've never heard of appear for Guitar Hero.

29.99 is too much for a handheld game. Especially one that's been on another handheld for about a year, even if it is a little different.

Chinatown Wars is too expensive. It costs more than either of the "full 3D" PSP GTA games!

Which version of Riff: Everyday Shooter is discounted PS3 or PSP. I've got the PSP version and I really like it so if this is the PS3 version then I'm all over it.

EDIT: Yay, it's the PS3 version. I might also get a couple of PS1 games, they translate really well to the PSP and they are better than most PSP games too.

For "today" and "buy now" I guess you mean "tomorrow" and "later" as the store hasn't updated and Sony Europe are down the pub. GTA pricing does seem crap given GT and MotoStorm are £21.99.

Pricing is generally set by the publisher (Rockstar in this case) not directly by Sony. How many times does that need to be said?

I bought this for £14.99 on the DS and that seemed like a reasonable price. I'm not sure whether £29.99 primarily falls into SonyLOL or DigitalDistributionLOL territory.

dont know why Rockstar decided to price GTA that high on the download store, i guess they think people can still buy it on UMD if they want it cheaper, but i aint interested in carrying around UMDs any more, thanks rockstar but i will wait till you tell sony to put it in the specials section.

It doesn't need to be said anymore. Because bizarrely it's not actually right. Final pricing is set by Sony.

got any evidence to back that up cos as a developer currently working on games for PSN ihave seen nothing so far to suggest that sony get involved in pricing unless there paying for development in some way

Failure to recognise that GTA won't be available till FRIDAY!!! on PSN, get your facts straight, which shouldn't be that hard as you just copy the Euro PS Blog.

I recently worked on a title that features premium DLC for which we were told that Sony would decide on the final pricing (not a Sony title). But in all honesty I'd actually like to believe that it's wrong as it seems slightly ludicrous to me.

I brought it off play first day for £15! Digital purchasing will never take off properly if this trend continues. On a much more important note - QUEEN! WOO!

Surely they should realise the people who buy those types of games are the people who go to a supemarket and see the title on display

Uh... Why is Eyepet stuff on the PSN store BEFORE the game has even hit retail shelves? Why not wait a week until some of us actually own the product...

As long as games are released simultaneously on UMD, there's no need to pay £29.99 for a download. And even if that ever becomes the only option, which for the PSP Go's sake it needs to, it's still too expensive by £5.

Until these companies stop being greedy, they can forget about their precious digital distribution future.

On a lighter note - they're encouraging people to buy the UMD, then unlock their PSP to rip it to Mem Stick.

£30 for a handheld game is too expensive anyway IMO Download or Physical for me. Handheld gaming has always been a bit of a fallback option really when I can't get onto a home console... so given the choice of buying something like Borderlands for £35 or a PSP game for £30 it's a no brainer.

Handheld games need to be no more than £20 IMO (£15 for a good game is the sweet spot I think for a 6-7hr great handheld game)

Soo..... no packaging, no disc, no artwork, no manuals, no distribution and no cut to the retailer. Equals more expensive.

PSPGo seems more like a must have every day!
