Eurogamer's Lifetime Top 10 Article

Article by Eurogamer staff

4 September, 2009

Page 1 of 6. Page 2 ->

10 years ago, at a long-dead trade show called ECTS, Eurogamer thrust up its first webpages and started filling them up. As somebody who has been here almost from day one (I joined the team in February 2000), I know that I could not have conceived of the site you're now reading, more than 3500 reviews later, from the creaky beige box hooked up to dual-bond ISDN in the days of the millennium bug, 5ive and Gerard Houllier. Far, far more importantly though, I certainly couldn't have conceived of some of the games we'd be playing, or the manner in which we'd be playing them, a decade after I took a job that's come to define me.

But this isn't just an introduction about how little foresight I have and the fact I don't go out much. It's to explain that as we arrive at our 10th birthday, the best way we can think to celebrate it (that we can put on the website, anyway) is to salute the very best games of the time we've been alive. After exhaustive polling of the entire Eurogamer staff - including editorial, tech, management, some old flames and even the salespeople - each of whom was allowed to nominate 10 games in order of preference, I've compiled a list of our 10 favourites based on weighted votes, and invited Eurogamer's foremost editors of past and present to comment on our selections. Say hello to the usual quartet of Ellie Gibson, Oli Welsh, Johnny Minkley and myself, but also welcome back Rob Fahey, Kristan Reed, and launch editor John "Gestalt" Bye.

(What's more, say hello to yourself, because last week we polled you for your favourites. If you'd like to see whether you did any better than us, be sure to check out the Editor's blog for the Readers' Top 50 list.)

Before we begin our countdown, however, a brief disclaimer. As with our Top 50 lists every Christmas, I'd be the first to admit the list that follows is anything but definitive. It does, however, reflect the tastes and preferences of more than 20 passionate gamers over a huge period of time, many of whom have been paid to play as much of everything under the sun during the period covered. If your first instinct is to call bullshit on the list, more power to you, but for the rest of you, I simply hope you enjoy being reminded about what are at the very least some of the games of the decade, and that you find some of our recollections and considerations insightful.

Tom Bramwell
Editor, Eurogamer.net
4th September 2009

P.S. Ever the spoilt brats, we couldn't stop at doing just one big celebratory games feature on our 10th birthday, so do be sure to check elsewhere on the site for individual blogs from each of the seven-strong panel, who, in addition to their comments for the top 10, were invited to write a longer post about any game they like from the last 10 years that happened to have a profound effect on them. Congratulations in particular to Ellie for choosing Fruit Mystery, the mad idiot.

10. RedLynx Trials 2: Special Edition / Trials HD

RedLynx / PC, Xbox 360

Tom Bramwell: There's a danger with best-of lists that they end up biased towards the flavour of the moment, and to some degree Trials' position in our top 10 games of the last 10 years probably does reflect that. But I kind of like that, too. I think when you look further down the list you'll be surprised at how wide our eyes were cast anyway, but in 10 years' time, if there still is an internet and someone looks at this list, realising that we all fell so completely in love with this little indie treasure in 2008/2009 will probably raise a smile rather than a frown.

'Eurogamer's Lifetime Top 10' Screenshot 10

Kristan Reed: Ever since Mr Chips came up with the remarkably addictive Kikstart 1&2 in the late '80s, I've hankered after a simple, side-scrolling, hazard-strewn, obstacle-course racing game. That's possibly the most laboured genre description you'll ever see, but Trials basically is Kikstart in all but name. Simply barrelling across a course from left to right without falling off is somehow the best fun, and yet almost ruinously frustrating. The ability to instantly reset Trackmania-style is undoubtedly the game's key saving grace, inspiring a degree of OCD devotion that turns a quick go into a 3 hour session in the blink of an eye. On top of that, has any game inspired such a slavish obsession to online leaderboards? If any game demonstrates how vital and how relevant downloadable games are to the current landscape, Trials is it.

Johnny Minkley: Finally completed the final stage of Hard in Trials HD this week. The final attempt took me over 28 minutes, hundreds of attempts and I was sweating like a LAN party by the time my driver limped over the line. The learning curve is savage, the infinite failure crushing, but the pain of defeat is rewarded with an incredible sense of achievement that seems to have faded from games over the past decade as they've become more "accessible". It's also the best leaderboard-focused game I've played in years. I just wish I'd never added Tom to my friends list.

Rob Fahey: I walked into a friend's flat the other day and discovered him and his flatmate sat on opposite ends of the sofa, not speaking to one another - a state which had persisted for over two hours, ever since my friend discovered that his flatmate had spent his afternoon off work methodically destroying each of his times in Trials HD. This game destroys friendships. It destroys lives. Forewarned is forearmed.

Different tastes and all that, but it's hard for me to imagine how a game designed to waste your time can be at the second place. (Didn't stop me from playing it for half a year though)

Nothing from Nintendo or anything even remotely left-field. A success in demonstrating a lack of imagination.

Its a crying shame CoD4 made it into the top ten, even forgetting the MP. You yourselves, described the SP as 'too tightly scripted', with a forgettable storyline and infinitely spawning enemies. Still, it looks pretty, eh?

An interesting list, and not one I would've picked. But that's the thing about favourite lists, isn't it? They're sort of... personal.

Actually I think we're supposed to start talking about sheds now rather than the actual article, if we're really doing that 'good old days' thing. :-D

Interesting, not a single console platform exclusive. I hope that's just a coincidence. It seems a bit incredible that nothing out of the last 10 years of Halo, Gears of War, Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports, God of War and Metal Gear Solid would be absent from anyone's top 10 games of the last decade. Even the PC has some glaring ommissions. Trials a better game than Left4Dead and Portal? Really?

it's interesting to note that being a 10 year span list, most of the games in it are quite recent ones. I know how recent goodness can leave a strong after-taste that makes us forget old goodies. when it comes to "top" I know that more recent games will obviously be better than older ones in many ways, but it's unfair to judge based on that. if we're gonna compare games from a decade apart it's only fair to do it in the context in which the games came out. grand theft auto 3 is a good call being one of the most revolutionary and influential of modern gaming. despite the fact that... well, it sucks. other pics seems to be more derivative. like fallout 3 and the elder scrolls. yes they are fine games, but are essentially the same thing grabbing two spots. half life 2 was a nice shooter, but again, it's the same as the first one with better gfx.

I don't know. these titles do not display the best that the last 10 years of gaming gave us, to me. maybe it's just taste.
what I do know is that portal should be there. :P

10 games from 10 years, it was always going to be controversial. you could have given a top 100 list and people would still complain about X or Y not being there.

It's all a bit current but whatever. Good games. It could have been many other combinations of 10. In fact I bet you've all thought of 10 more already now that you have put the article out!

It's also interesting that GTA4 doesn't feature. Has it been long enough for you to admit it's the worst GTA so far yet?

Well, at least Deus Ex and Half-Life 2 got in there, with Deus Ex managing to fall a mere 2 spots short of it's deserved #1 crown.

I'm surprised and relieved that there weren't any of the hype-machine-shiny-graphics-console-shooters in there. Well done EG :D

Ah I almost forgot about GTA3! I remember bumbling around Game and seeing it on the shelf, just released. Hadn't seen any previews, hadn't actually gone hands on with the previous games. Looked at the back cover, thought "I've always fancied a go on GTA3, why not give it a risk, I want a new game"... got it home and BAM. Bloody awesome.

The atmosphere was bang on... I remember many a time I'd park up in Liberty City with MSXfm on the go to roll a cheeky and just watch the day roll by. Clouds come in, rain pour down, and FOG. One thing that I missed in Vice City, nice dense atmosphereic fog. I'd say that San Andreas is the pinnicle of the series for the sheer scale and immersion but I think GTA3 deserves the praise for the impact it made.

I've always thought Oli Welsh is a bit of a dickhead, but this:

One thing, though - Death From Above. That level is incredible. The sense of alienation, the meaningless, soundless slaughter in grainy black-and-white, the presentation of godlike technological might tearing little humans to pieces, the blunt title... In the ultimate gung-ho war game, it comes across as almost anti-war. It sent shivers down my spine. I still don't know if Infinity Ward meant it that way, but respect, regardless.

Is very perceptive and is exactly how I felt about the level too. One of gaming's very finest moments. That you felt the need to follow the observation up with a bitchy, backhanded and apparently contemptuous remark at IW's expense is unfortunate.

A reasonably well reasoned list, and I'm delighted to see Halo isn't on it.

You yourselves, described the SP as 'too tightly scripted', with a forgettable storyline and infinitely spawning enemies. Still, it looks pretty, eh?

Difference of opinion across a panel of writers shocker.

Stuart Campbell doesn't like it. Quelle surprise.
The only way the good Reverend would agree with a top ten list is if it was filled with obscure shmups and racing games that were only available for an obscure Japanese games console in the 80s.

Good to see GTA3 topping the list I remember getting the game when I was about 11 thinking the possibilities were endless, although nothing could beat cruising, listening to 80's cheese with the sun setting in the distance as in GTA Vice City. GTA3 came mighty close!

Q3A but not UT (both released in 99)?
I won't argue with Deus Ex, that was excellent.
No mention of Operation: Flashpoint (2001), probably the most influential military sim ever made (until ArmAII recently)?
You preferred the roleplaying experience of Oblivion to Baldur's Gate 2 (2000)?
No Resident Evil 4? Or God of War?

Very odd list, but I imagine deliberately so or we'd all agree and post nothing.
