Alan Wake 2 to be Kinect compatible?

Remedy recruiting motion control experts.

The next project from Alan Wake developer Remedy looks like it will be putting Kinect through its paces, according to a new recruitment listing.

The posting on Remedy's website explains, "We are looking for a skilled programmer with a passion for game programming to join our team. You will be working on the next iteration of Remedy's unique game engine that was previously used in Alan Wake."

Among the credentials the Finnish developer asks of potential employees is, "Experience on motion-control technology (e.g. Kinect)."

There's no confirmation that the job listing applies to Alan Wake 2, but Remedy is certainly keen to get started on a sequel.

Earlier this year the developer told Eurogamer, "We definitely want to do it. We have great ideas for it. There's certainly a want, and that want is I believe from both sides."

Remedy's long-delayed survival horror finally arrived on Xbox 360 earlier this year, scoring a slightly anti-climactic 7/10 from Eurogamer's Ellie Gibson.

Alan Wake 2...so we're looking at another 10 years before that comes out?
  • darleysam #2 2 years ago

Using the same engine != Alan Wake 2. I want AW2 as much as anyone, but Remedy wanting to make that doesn't mean that's their next project. I'd sooner expect a quicker, cheaper-to-develop Kinect title with a 'core' emphasis to bring in some money.

Lol, hopefully they can knock it out as fast as Killzone 3 was after the 5 year wait for Killzone 2
  • metalmike25 #4 2 years ago

Hopefully they make this one good ;)

I actually think kinect could be quite good for this game. 'Flashlights in the dark'-type exploring might really work with this tech. Loved the first AW, so definitely keeping an open mind.
  • Lexx87 #6 2 years ago

Sam if you actually read the story it says it could be Alan Wake 2 not that it is.
  • darleysam #7 2 years ago

I know, but the title's a bit more direct than that.

edit: what I mean is, I read a title that states Alan Wake 2 is in development, and may be using Kinect, followed by an article saying Remedy are looking for someone to work with motion controls and have stated that they'd like to make Alan Wake 2. There's a pretty big gulf in there.

Aww that'd be great with Kinect support. You could accurately stamp your feet and roll around on the floor paddyin just like the real deal.
  • DoctorFraud #9 2 years ago

Torch & gun would work perfectly with kinect.
  • sneetch #10 2 years ago

    @darleysam

It doesn't state that Alan Wake 2 is in development, it poses the question: "Alan Wake 2 to be Kinect compatible?"
  • MJHaylett #11 2 years ago

Alan Wake 2? I did not expect a follow up as the first game sold like turds on sticks. No fanboys I am not saying its a bad game, I am merely stating you can buy it new for about a tenner - not the mark of a successful game that.
  • RodHull #12 2 years ago

Alan Wake is probably one of the few games ideally suited for the Kinect. Hopes high for this one.

Yeah? I don't see why it's ideally suited to Kinect, I'm curious to see how you'd steer Alan around for example.

U could still direct torch with one hand and move with another, but even so I m defeated about how you could finetune aiming and still have fun?!

Thing is, here professional people trying to make Kinect works and I m willing to see what they can produce out of rabbit hat, and sure I thought likewise Move more practical here.

Enjoyed Alan Wake, whatever Ellie thought or said, making Kinect works could certainly heightened the immersion and scare factor!!
  • darleysam #15 2 years ago

sneetch, my point is that having a title like that is quite a tabloid thing to do as it heavily implies things that aren't true, just to sound more sensational and grab more attention. I'm not one of the guys who's been whining about the abundance of stories about Kinect and Black Ops, EG can write as many news stories as they like. This is just some pedantry on my part about a misleading headline.
  • Water1111 #16 2 years ago

so according to eurogamer, alan wake is coming to pc.

  • NewbieZilla #18 2 years ago

Its funny. I decided ages ago that I'd only get Kinect when there are games that justify owning it. But seeing this news that Alan Wake 2 using kinect, I'm kinda worried it'll detract from the game. As long as the motion control is done well, to state the obvious I'll be happy.

Oh, and another point regarding "Experience on motion-control technology (e.g. Kinect)."

How many people will really be able to answer to that in the affirmative?

Sam if you actually read the story it says it could be Alan Wake 2 not that it is.

If you read the headline you would know that it is deliberately intended to suggest EG have information suggesting the latter.

Personally i would have to disagree and this would ruin AW imho... So i am hoping its not that, i would rather just AW2 without Kinect.
  • Phantom_Dynamite #23 2 years ago

Kinect would be best implemented by letting you punch Barry in the face repeatedly.
  • edhe #24 2 years ago

Hm, i'd rather see kinect measuring your stress levels, if possible, than adding some sort of shitty flashlight mechanic.
  • Raznilof #25 2 years ago

Alan Wake (though flawed) is one of the few unique xbox experiences on the console which (and I do love em) is littered with big muscular games mostly. It's great that something that's off the beaten path gets room to mature.

Day one purchase for me (if it still uses a a controller that is)

If they were to add Kinect to Alan Wake 2 it could be something really interesting. They could add voice commands into the game (a nod to the 'power in words' used in the add-ons) and allow you to summon objects (using key words such as light for batteries or those street lights used to heal yourself)

Whatever game they make I'm sure they don't want to tack it onto an existing game without much thought being put into its design (yep, looking at you Harry Potter)
  • Mashum #27 2 years ago

There could have been fewer walking through forest levels but I loved the first game. I hope they don't ruin the sequel by making me vogue in front of the tv in order to reload.
  • apoc_reg #28 2 years ago

Sounds cool, can't wait for a great game to use it
  • faster1974 #29 2 years ago

    @cheekybyname

Just before I got my Move controller, I played Silent Hill: Shattered Memories on the Wii and I couldn't help but think all the way through how AW would have benefited from motion controls. Maybe Kinect will feel as natural a fit, but Move just seems perfect to me.
  • smallvillefan #30 2 years ago

Didn't like Alan Wake, it was too linear and repetitive in the extreme. Adding gimmick controls is likely to make it worse, not better. Focus more on developing a more varied, solid to control experience and you're gold Remedy, don't waste our time on bullshit.
