More LostWinds blowing in

Frontier offers Elite IV, Outsider updates too.

Fans of delightful WiiWare platformer LostWinds rejoice – there's more on the way, developer Frontier has revealed.

Frontier's founder and chairman David Braben told Eurogamer, "It's far from done and dusted - there are still many more stories to tell from [game world] Mistralis. We'll keep you updated as we have news."

LostWinds and its sequel have been among the highlights of the Wii's download service. 2009's Winter of the Melodias coaxed a near-perfect 9/10 from Eurogamer's Christian Donlan.

Gamers hoping for a switch to PlayStation 3's Move controller might be disappointed though. "We are not currently developing for it," Braben said of Sony's motion controller.

Next out of the gate for Frontier is Kinectimals for Xbox 360 on 10th November, but that's not all the studio has in the pipeline. There's ambitious, enigmatic epic The Outsider and the long-awaited Elite IV is still on the cards too.

"The Outsider is still in full production," said Braben. "Elite IV has not yet moved to the full production stage. Again, when we're ready to say more we'll update everyone."

Great news, though by the sounds of things it's a long way off yet. I'd love an autumnal adventure this time. We've had summer and winter in Melodias, and the original had a spring-y vibe. A hazy, sunset glow coupled with falling leaves would make Mistralis look rather lovely, I fancy.

I was very interested in The Outsider, ooo, 4 years ago. Now, I'm not so sure :/

Completely missed that LostWinds had a sequel. Time to purchase my second digital Wii game methinks...

I really enjoyed the LostWinds games although I have to admit Winter of Melodias did get just a tiny bit repetitive at the end when you had to go through the same area for the 4th time or so.

Nevertheless one of the most important WiiWare games out there.

This reads like a non-announcement: Outsider? Still "in production", Elite 4? Still in "pre-production", Lostwinds? Oh yeah, but nothing to announce but soon (seemingly a glacial term in Frontier Developments). PS3? Nothing released on it since launch, but hey it may get Outsider or Elite 4 - two ambitious and arguably complex titles, should they ever arise.

I used to have immense respect for Braben and his achievements but it's hard now.

Great game, although the second kind of sidestepped the story the first hinted at, and the first had more charm overall...

I've pretty much given up on Elite IV coming out anytime soon. Sounds like it's at least 5 years away, IF it's ever made.

given how robust x3 is in terms of patches, community and featureset, elite just needs to do it all better, ideally with better quest arcs, perhaps even session based multiplayer with instancing, rather than massive persistence, that way you could dip in and out of multiplayer but take the rewards in and out of it with your single player.

I don't want to hear another fucking word from Braben, or from journalists, about Elite 4 until the bloody thing is either in a box on the shelf of a shop, or available for purchase and download on Steam or similar.

I've got to admit, I put a hell of a lot of time in to Frontier on my Amiga back in the day, but it isn't a game I look back on with particularly fond memories. I'll be surprised if a new Elite game from Braben ever sees the light of day, and I don't exactly have high hopes for it. Get Ian Bell back on the team and then I might reconsider it.

I'd love to see an other Lost Winds game.
Both games may be short but worth there 1000 wii points.

    FFS JUST FINISH ELITE IV

    lol

LostWinds is a really delightful game. It's a shame they won't port it to PS3 for move because I can't play games on the Wii now. The tracker is way off because of the size of my tv and all the games look worse than usual because of the machine wasn't designed to be played on large screens. Please Nintendo release a Wii HD with better wii remote tracking or alternatively publishers port all your decent wii games over to the PS3 because I'm sure they sold well under expectations.

Al I read was "...blah, blah Elite IV not yet in full production stage...blah, blah..."

Gods sake, get on it man and hunker down!

For the love of Christ, how is Elite 4 still pre-production?
  • Lin #17 2 years ago

it's amazing that a new elite game has gone unmade for so long. the name just oozes money. and the genre has been all but abandoned.

just make sure it's not an mmo. i have eve for that.
