Buffy the Vampire Slayer Review

Review - Tom heads to Sunnydale and pretends to be a cheerleader - a normal weekend for him, you might argue

'I feel like a new Slayer!' She actually says this.

This being a family publication, we can't really address the dark, deeply unhygienic things most of you would like to do with Sarah Michelle Gellar, but suffice to say for some of you, her absence from this game - both in voice and in spirit - will be enough to put you off your stake. But whether or not you like the show and whether or not you lust after the carefully constructed 25-year-old, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is very nearly one of the best Xbox exclusive titles we've seen.

The third person Buffy is built around a very simple combat mechanic - punch and kick repeatedly, in tandem, in combination with other functions, or with stake in hand. Vampires come at you with a similarly effective arsenal of moves, and you have to work through their blocks and empty their energy meter enough to leave them susceptible to a staking, whether they be on the floor, walking wounded, lunging for your throat or leaping at you from above. The first time you stake a vamp you'll grin maniacally, and the sight of a despised vamp receiving a heartfelt blow and dissipating into ash, whilst screaming in agony of course, is... well, worryingly and consistently satisfying.

Vamps of all shapes and sizes stock the various levels, but as you progress you run into the much tougher hellhounds, relentless zombie women, skeletal warriors whose limbs need severing, and specially imported vamps with much more to say for themselves.

The good news is that The Collective has created a selection of Slayer Moves and Super Slayer Moves; one-time attacks which feed off your Slayer Power. Slayer Power accumulates as you collect the orbs left behind by former vamps and other creatures, and with a few grunts out of the way you can unleash everything from powerful jab cross combos to jumping back fist attacks and bicycle kicks. Combos, slayer moves and super slayer moves are all easily performed and rely on Street Fighter-style analogue stick and action button combinations, which your friendly watcher Giles will inform you about between missions.

He's gonna pop

The structure of the game is thus; Buffy goes to a location in Sunnydale, purges it of vamps and other nasties whilst jumping and climbing through various obstacles they've set out, learns some more about the grand plot and then takes on a boss, before retiring to the library for a conference with Giles, Xander, Cordelia and Willow. As she goes about her business, she collects various potions and stakes to keep her going, and even the odd single-use item like a shovel or mop. Later on she gets her mits on hellfire and holy water launchers to complement her zoomable crossbow, but these play a lesser role than her flailing limbs.

To start the game, Buffy takes on a training course to introduce her to the controls and combat. It's at this very early stage that the darkness becomes a problem - even jumping between supposedly verdant grassy ledges is impeded by an almost jet blackness which haunts you throughout. Falling from ledges, ladders and worse is your fate unless you find the brightness option and turn it right up. Sadly, this leaves the visuals quite washed out and PC-like - not a good start.

Fight on through the training course though, and you'll see what the game is really about - it's a glorified obstacle course with the odd vaguely mind-warming puzzle and carefully cordoned off vampire encounters. It's the strength of the combat which keeps you coming back - certainly not the level design, which is often fairly pedestrian at best. Take the first real level after the training section, Sunnydale High, as an example. Some discourteous peeping Toms interrupt Buffy's cheerleading practice, and so she has to trawl the halls dispatching them. As she wanders around school, she can only open doors lit up by a green sign, and she has to kill the vamps before most of the doors will open anyway.

The whole level literally revolves around the school hall, which is regularly visible through internal windows, and there is little or no variation in design. At one point our heroine runs into Willow and the others in a classroom and learns some more about the menace, but otherwise it's simple kill, door, kill, door gameplay until she gets to the boss fight.

Magic walls

These guys don't need staking, they need dismembering

The deeply formulaic nature of the single player game is almost shameless by the time you get to Angel's mansion, which is under siege. Enter a room and a green force field pops up over both entrance and exit - defeat the enemies, move on and the next room will behave in the same way. Even the most obscure locations manage this - in a particular graveyard section, Buffy is surrounded by decomposing skeletal attackers, and the whole group is surrounded by a white, mystical force field, which shoehorns Buffy into a claustrophobic and quite unmanageable encounter, eventually emerging only to do much the same again.

Your reward for defeating a section is a chat with the gang back at HQ. Each character in Buffy has been designed as a cartoonish, but very representative approximation of their TV counterpart, and with only a few exceptions they work. Buffy looks very much like Buffy, even if the voice actress behind her squawks is having difficulty, and Willow, Xander and Cordelia all look and dress appropriately. Giles and Angel are a bit of a problem though - Giles' shoulders look as though they're trying to escape, and his nose clearly wants out, while Angel looks sheepish and far from the ravenous, beast of a man he really should be.

The best character in the game (and arguably the series) though is Spike. His affected English accent with a Northern lilt provides a delightful contrast, and his role as deputy badguy, answering only to The Master, means he's one of the most charismatic and mysterious enemies in the game - after all, he can't die, or can he? He gets all the best lines too - a particular favourite being "put her down you wanker," which had me chuckling away for a few seconds. It's just not what you expect at the time!

A stake in the business

Buffy changes outfits between levels - hurrah!

In bringing Buffy to the Xbox, The Collective has produced what they describe as a lost episode of season three. If you know where all the characters were at that point, then good, but if you don't it doesn't really matter. Events elsewhere are borne out in the dialogue between characters and events on-screen. Voice acting is generally very good, and the script is also good, although there are some aspects which fall short. The sexual innuendo is childish but neat, but Buffy's one-liners are un-Gellarly and perhaps even a bit stupid.

The graphics on the whole match the mayhem, as do the sound effects and soundtrack. The game never looks like it'll give the Halos and Gothams of this world a scare, but the level interiors are nicely textured, and the animation is very dynamic and cleverly engineered. Plus, there's a sufficient amount of detail that you can look at your positioning, take a swing at a vamp and send him backwards onto that outstretched table leg you spotted earlier. The only problem from our point of view is the camera, which, despite direct control mapped to the right analogue stick, is not very helpful at all and often causes problems. Fortunately, you can lock onto and cycle through targets using the right trigger - without this, Buffy would be really frustrating.

In audio terms, the screams, thumps and thwacks are all top notch, and the soundtrack is mostly ambient and quite fitting. You'll be pleased to know that the intro sequence (a must-watch) is a gamed up version of the opening credits, complete with TV theme tune, and if you make it through the 10 or so hours of this you'll... no, we won't tell you. You should find out for yourself. However, you should know that finishing the game unlocks a neat bonus aspect.

So, however surprisingly, Buffy is mostly very good and mostly worth having. The combat is quite repetitive, but it's always rewarding, and the only criticisms we have of the game at large are the way you're shoehorned into battles and the placing of save points. Often with only a bit of health and a single stake, you'll have to retry a section multiple times to get anywhere, and this can become deeply frustrating before you know it. Like the vamps though, having your health bar knocked the whole way down isn't the kiss of death - they still need to take a chunk out of your neck. And you can always pick the game up from various save points prior to that - each catalogued and remembered by the Xbox hard disk.

Do I recommend Buffy? In a word, yes. In several more, it's without doubt the best game of a TV show to date, and despite a few niggles, the absence of Sarah Michelle Gellar and the feel of a PC title, it captures the essence of combat, characters and quests which runs through the series, and it's easily worth sinking your teeth into.

What ? You mean they don't have any clothes on ?

"it’s without doubt the best game of a TV show to date"

What about those classic robot wars games?

But seriously, am I though only person in the world who doesn't find Buffy (the TV show, not the lovely lady) entertaining?
  • Mugwum Verified Operations Director, Eurogamer Network #14 10 years ago

Nope, quite a few people don't go for the show. I can take it or leave it, but I quite enjoyed watching it in the run up to this game.
  • Concrete #15 10 years ago

Just got hunter for the xbox and this sounds pretty similar - is it worth getting both? Hunter rules btw - good review of it :)

Nope, I despise it. I used to rather enjoy it, but after you've seen 5 episodes you've basically seen them all.

  • Tyronne #24 10 years ago

Personally I really do like this....but then being a almost 30yr old buffy fan is a bit difficult to admit to but what the hell...beats watching popstars....and its got pretty women in it and lesbians to boot...what more could anyone want...other than the lost adventures of willow and tara and the loufer...or the squeaky duck...and the bubble bath.
  • Razz #25 10 years ago

Since were on the subject of Buffy:

A SPELL TO REMEMBER A PAST LIFE
    items needed:
    1 white candle
    1 mirror

Sit in front of the mirror, turn off the lights and light the candle. Set the candle next to the mirror so the light can hit your face, but so you will NOT see the candle in the mirror. After this is done, look into your eyes and say:
    "Oracle of lunar light
Send to me the second sight"
Stare into your eyes and do NOT blink. Your reflection will dissolve and another will appear. Try to look at the face, body, clothing, and surroundings. After you do this you will have emotions you cannot explain. Dont worry, they will go away in a few minutes.
  • Errol #26 10 years ago

its got pretty women in it and lesbians to boot

Thats good enough for me !
  • Errol #27 10 years ago

Bah, Buffy/SMG is an ugly bint, give me Willow and Tara (preferably both of them) any day...

So, I take it you only get to control Buffy then? That's a bit of a waste really, isn't it? I mean, wouldn't it be more fun to be able to play with gothed up black magick Willow? Or go around as Xander whacking things with a shovel (first nerdy construction worker playable character!!!). Hell, even having a bonus 'see how many times you can get Giles knocked out in a minute' bonus game would have been a nice addition...

I was hoping for an RPG, or at least a Soul Reaver inspired game, but I guess the allure of the license was too much.
  • binky #31 10 years ago

I'd still 'do' her though. To put it bluntly.
  • eviltobz #34 10 years ago

  • Mr_Sleep #37 10 years ago

Charisma Carpenter is by far the most attractive of them all.

I think that Buffy is complete dross now, it was quite good when Angel was around and there was some kind of conflict now it feels like a script written by a 10 year old.

If only they'd let me write the script; I'm sure I could 'spice' things up a bit (although it might have to be on very late at night ...).

There is lots of scope for hot girl on girl action, and orgies etc etc.

Holly V was on a Friday night. Blurgh. She's not all that Errol, sorry son,

I saw that at a mate's place. I was a little... stoned so I wasn't concentrating too much but I did manage to make a few scientific observations:

    - That Irish guy is an idiot
    - Enfield is an idiot
    - Valance has no sense of humour
    - Valance is not all that

  • Mr_Sleep #41 10 years ago

Errol, so where do you see the series going if you held the reins?

You pitch does sound intruiging so far ;)
  • Nemesis #42 10 years ago

    FWB.

Enfield looked drunk and wasn't very good and, er, where'd his hair go! He kept interrupting everyone and I don't think they'd invite him back!

Valance has a very limited personality.

And she's REALLY not all that. Isla is better.
  • Gestalt #43 10 years ago

    Oh dear, don't encourage him.
  • Errol #44 10 years ago

Valance has no sense of humour

She does have a sense of humour. I read the other day that some guy asked her on a radio phone-in whether she 'gave good head'.

She replied, 'yes, I do actually'.

    lol.

ps. (isla is better - I agree with that).

She replied, 'yes, I do actually'.

That's not humour, that's lacking enough brains to come up with a decent putdown line!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Errol #46 10 years ago

This is why we need a section of the EG website dedicated to 'Babes'. This section would include a 'Babe of the Day' news feature, a section on 'Antipodean Babes - Do they go 'down' under ?' and loads of pictures.

EG would get a lot more hits, I reckon.
  • Errol #47 10 years ago

It is a put down line in itself ! The guy who rang up would never have expected that sort of response. He probably wanted to annoy/fluster/harass her. She dealt with it in a stunningly simple way.

    I like girls like that.
  • Nemesis #48 10 years ago

It is a put down line in itself !

Doesn't really rate with the best put down line ever, though, let's be honest.

I figure it's best to lest he explode ;)

Isla? You'll have to forgive me on this one. I'm not up to date on all of these models/singers/actresses etc.

Valance did appear good looking, from what I saw, but certainly not as great as that Irish twat was making out.

She does have a sense of humour. I read the other day that some guy asked her on a radio phone-in whether she 'gave good head'.

She replied, 'yes, I do actually'.

I'm with Nemesis on this one. That isn't a great put down but a thoughtless reply. It is an off the top of your.... (well you know ;) ) answer. Either she says "yes" or "no". Which one would you go for?

You can't link to places like Fortunecity directly, you get the logo instead. Be thankful it's just that: some other sites I've seen display instead a very high resolution, very very zoomed in shot of the end of a gentleman's appendage, instead of the desired picture which they host.

It made for one of the most funniest threads I've ever seen, when someone posted:

    "But I prefer this..."

Only to have said zoomed in, high res appendage appear below.

    Stu - Alt+TAB:

Assuming you're using Windows, try holding down Alt and pressing TAB - you're able to cycle through your active windows and change what's at the front by letting go.

It's quicker and more discreet than desperately clicking your mouse when you need to get rid of non-work-related surfing!
  • Super Stu #112 10 years ago

Sorry, didn't mean to imply that I didn't know what Alt+Tab was (which worked way back in win3.1, didn't it?)

What I meant was, your boss might not know what you're doing if you are discrete, but the All Knowing and All Seeing Novell Firewall knows exactly what I'm doing. Unfortunately.

Not sure what technical stuff there is behind our office PCs - no doubt everything I'm looking at is caching on some server somewhere for later scrutiny by our IT manager. Haven't been busted yet on the web surfing!

The guy in the tv show has a much nicer ass that Buffy, his ass is nice and firm, with suculent hips complimenting what I am sure is to be a rather large package. He is rather tasty, though the Irish guy is sexy in his own way as well, he has a nice older, more maturish way about him, with an obviously nice chest which seems to hint at a rather large package as well, which is good. Though I do still prefer Tom Cruise in ass department, his beginning scene in Mission Impossible 3 was unfuckingbelievable, with his strong arms grasping at those rocks, while he desperately attempted to swing up, all while his balls could easily be seen making meekish imprints into his otherwise godly ass.

    ummm ... right.

  • Whizzo #158 10 years ago

Of course the fact that the joke isn't funny at all is what really makes it so pathetic.

The amount of times I had to cover my eyes and keep saying "Please stop!" at the TV last night was incredible!

David Brent is one of the most hideous comic creations in history, he just doesn't know when to shut up and stop digging himself even deeper into the hole he's got himself.

Tim: "Team Leader don't mean anything mate"
Gareth: "Excuse me, it means I'm leader of a team" Tim: "No it doesn't. It's a title someone's given you to get you to do something they don't want to do for free - it's like making the div kid at school milk monitor. No one respects it"
Gareth: "Er I think they do"
    Tim: "No they don't Gareth"
Gareth: "Er yes they do, cos if people were rude to me then I used to give them their milk last... so it was warm."

    Classic stuff! :-)

Edit : swiped the whole quote in full from the official site, much better than my misquoted version...

  • otto #165 10 years ago

Coupling is essentially a British version of 'Friends'. All the US characters are re-produced in Coupling, and even the episodes follow very similar story lines.
  • otto #169 10 years ago

Coupling is Friends with nob gags.
  • Whizzo #170 10 years ago

There are similarities between the two but there are a lot of differences, sex, knob gags and the very bizarre things Jeff comes up with i.e. the dreaded Melty Man. It's going to be interesting to see what Steven Moffat is going to have to change for the US version...
  • otto #171 10 years ago

    He's doing a US version??

    sellout

It'll be like Absolutely Fabulous, ie it won't work.
  • Whizzo #172 10 years ago

Yes he is, I read an interview with him not too long ago about it. He wasn't too sure how well it would work, here a story about the US casting.
  • Mr_Sleep #173 10 years ago

Anyone remember Ultraviolet, another programme featuring Jack Deavenport. Basically they were supposed to be converted to the US market but as far as I know it hasn't seen the light of day, the same thing will probably happen with this.
  • ssuellid #174 10 years ago

They made a US Pilot of Ultraviolet and nowt else: -

    http://www.tvtome.com/tvtome/servlet/ShowMainServlet/showid-4940/

    Thats another site worth bookmarking.

Ultraviolet is available on DVD now.

Anyone remember another Channel 4 series called Underworld? Probably the best thing they have ever made but I only know 2 other people.
  • Whizzo #175 10 years ago

US Ultraviolet had a pilot made but never went further than that, which is probably just as well.

It looks like NBC have commisioned the pilot of Coupling because they'll need something to replace Friends when it finishes this season. If however Friends does go another season, Coupling would probably be ditched.
    Edited by Whizzo at 01/10/02 @ 13:32
  • otto #176 10 years ago

ta Whizzo. Can't see it working in the US myself, at least not with the same kind of humour. Also, I suppose it would put the kybosh on further series in the UK, assuming Moffat does all the writing for the US version himself. Which would be unusual wouldn't it? They usually go for writing by committee over there - that's not meant as a criticism btw, if there's one thing on which the Americans can outclass the British it's in well-written and consistently funny TV sitcoms.
  • Mr_Sleep #177 10 years ago

Does anyone still actually watch Friends, I found the whole thing got kind of stale.
  • Errol #178 10 years ago

If however Friends does go another season

    I reckon it will.
  • ssuellid #179 10 years ago

re Friends, I watched some of one on Channel 4 the other evening, but the canned laughter is very annoying.
  • Errol #180 10 years ago

    Amost to 200 comments.
  • Whizzo #181 10 years ago

The British version has been quite popular in the US on BBCAmerica apparently, enough at least for the DVDs to be released over there next year.

The UK original UV did well on Sci-Fi over there and a lot of Americans wanted more of that rather than an American produced version.

Perhaps the US networks should at least try showing a non-American produced TV show and see what happens!
  • Errol #182 10 years ago

I watched some of one on Channel 4 the other evening, but the canned laughter is very annoying.

umm ... its not canned. Friends is filmed before a live studio audience.
  • Whizzo #183 10 years ago

Does anyone still actually watch Friends
I still watch Friends and it's still pretty good. The first episode of season 9 is a good start to the new season, not that I could have seen it of course...
  • ssuellid #184 10 years ago

It may be recorded in front of a live studio audience but they are still "enhancing" it with canned laughter.
  • Errol #185 10 years ago

they are still "enhancing" it with canned laughter

    Can you prove that ?
  • otto #186 10 years ago

I went from really hating Friends in the first season to really liking it to the point of taping it every week. Now frankly I'm bored to tears with it. Stale isn't the word. I just don't care about any of the characters any more.
  • Errol #187 10 years ago

I reckon they should take a 20yr break, and then come back and film Friends in a retirement home.
  • Mr_Sleep #188 10 years ago

Maybe they have reinvented it a little, but the last episodes I watched seemed to rely on the exact same humour and the same jokes.
  • ssuellid #189 10 years ago

Errol - You can not tell by watching it?

Just search for Friends Canned Laughter with your favourite search engine.

A lot of shows that use a live studio audience add extra laughter at bits the audience did not laugh at.

The other reason to add laughter is if they have to do some editing and the laughter has to be seamless - the visuals can switch between cameras etc but the audio is always single sourced.

The third reason for adding a laughter track to a show recorded in front of a live audience is to test jokes. This is sort of the same as the first version but, the actual live audience soundtrack may never be used - they just save time and money by knowing which bits to ditch or re-record straight away.

  • binky #190 10 years ago

i used to watch friends religiously but I think ive seen less than half of the last series tbh.
  • sam_spade #191 10 years ago

The laughter is probably cut from another section, or previous episode, of the show.

There was a classic Stand Up Show when the host told that godawful joke about the dog using his front paws on a wall to have a wee. Why does he do that? Because the wall fell on him last time.

Anyway, he finishes the joke, there's a smash cut to audience laughing, with no build-up and then it cuts back to the host and there is silence. Truly awful.
  • Daryoon #192 10 years ago

They did that on Vanessa's old crappy ITV show (which I was 'fortunate' enough to see live when I was in college). Before it starts they got everyone to do lots of shouting and cheering and crap 'to test the sound'...but what they don't tell you is that they're recording it so they can paste it into the show so it doesn't look like we were as bored out of our heads as we were.

Plus they never showed the hilarious bit where Vanessa (whose even larger in real life o_O) told us all to 'start fucking participating'.

Yes, 18 year olds know loads about unwanted pregnancies and evil ex's...well, maybe 18 y/o's from London do, but not us people from the country!

Hello Hello he's swearing again. Must be a bad day at Jaffa Cake Central.

Friends. I buy the boxed sets and I'm up to series 4. The trick I find is to take a little break between series. Some things in the series just make me laugh out loud, it cheers me up some nights. Then again, series 4 is WAY back. I watched the latest series and I'm like "Whoa, so when did Chandler get fat?" and everyone else is like "Hello, where's have YOU been? Oh, series 3-4. Hokay"

read somewhere that friends is actually recorded twice...with different audiences so that if one lot dont get the jokes the others will...that or they can rewrite shite stuff and then play it better for the next lot....me it personnally makes me want to vomit blood as soon as the opening credits start up.....and no doubt they will do to coupling what they did to red dwarf as in totally ruin it or tame it down....and the only way you would get a us company doing a show over here is if its a co-operation as if it was just them I think the US unions would throw a fit...but i could be wrong on that.

New rumour my arse - that's been doing the rounds for weeks along with the 'Microsoft is about to buy Capcom' one. Generic unsubstantiated rumour shite. (sorry Stu)

Red Dwarf is basically blokes messing about in space. When Lister finally got the girl, it ruined one of the central plots IMO. The last series I turned off straight away, it.Was. Just. Awful.
  • Mr_Sleep #215 10 years ago

I think my boss is going to suspect I spend all day looking at SMG instead of actually doing some work...I am not sure whether he will pat me on the back or give me the sack, it depends on if I store the images for him ;)

You might want to be careful, with all this linkage it might crash smgfan's site...then where would you be? :D
  • Killerbee #216 10 years ago

Red Dwarf is basically blokes messing about in space. When Lister finally got the girl, it ruined one of the central plots IMO. The last series I turned off straight away, it.Was. Just. Awful.

I quite liked the last series (VIII) - Krytie TV was especially a fantastic "blokes" episode and I liked the "back to the programme's roots" feel of it. And Lister never really got together with Kochanski! It was certainly a significant improvement over series VI and VII which were verging on crapness - well, crap for Red Dwarf anyway.

Sadly though, 'tis true that the hey-day of III, IV and V are unlikely to be bettered. There's meant to be a full-length movie in production as well.
  • Mr_Sleep #217 10 years ago

"Sadly though, 'tis true that the hey-day of III, IV and V are unlikely to be bettered. There's meant to be a full-length movie in production as well."

About what? I mean they have pretty much run out ideas I would have thought.
  • Nemesis #218 10 years ago

And Lister never really got together with Kochanski

I watched the series on an irregular basis to be honest; the first book was actually very good, but it kinda went into a decline after that.
  • Killerbee #219 10 years ago

About what? I mean they have pretty much run out ideas I would have thought.

It's meant to be a full-length re-telling of the original pilot episode story. If you've read the novels, there was quite a bit of back story that never appeared on the TV show, so maybe it'll be some of that. I'm a big RD fan and even I'm not so sure this is a good idea. We'll wait and see...

BTW DVDs of series 1 and 2 are due next month! w00t!
  • Errol #220 10 years ago

Another reason to get a DVD player (or PS2 ;) )

I suppose that isn't such a bad idea, I do however think that the cast has to be exactly perfect, it was Lister and Rimmer's chemistry (or lack there of) that made the series, also the excellent writing.
  • Whizzo #224 10 years ago

BTW DVDs of series 1 and 2 are due next month!
They better be the non-buggered about versions as promised and not that "re-mastered" crap.

Ugh quite what they were thinking when they tinkered around with the original episodes is beyond me.
  • Nemesis #225 10 years ago

The Singing Detective? Not, sadly, on DVD.

Thought this might raise it's ugly head once more.

PS2 as a DVD player, Err no thanks it really does suck the big one. Good console, yes. Crap DVD player, yes.
  • otto #228 10 years ago

On the recommendation of you lot I got the first series of Spaced on DVD & finally got to watch the first couple of episodes yesterday. I was really impressed. Not roll on floor guffawing funny but somehow it oozed quality. Especially good as the stuff those actors have done previously was a bit shite I thought (thinking Hippies, Big Train).
  • Errol #229 10 years ago

Is the PS2 DVD player really that crap ? In what way ? Is the picture worse ?

    Please elaborate.
  • otto #230 10 years ago

More Red Dwarf linkage, this time on the DVDs. Check out the other links on the left of the page.

The official site is rather good if you haven't checked it out already.

Also, the cast for the movie is almost definitely going to be the same as for the UK TV series - this is a good thing imo!

Only watched the first couple! I feel like pulling an imaginary gun from out of an imaginary shoulder holster and start shooting at you, however as that's a reference to a second series episode it would be rather pointless... ;-)
  • ssuellid #235 10 years ago

Otto, do you have Black Books on DVD yet?

The Little Book of Calm episode must be one of the finest bits of TV ever.
  • eviltobz #236 10 years ago

Is the PS2 DVD player really that crap ? In what way ? Is the picture worse ?

For all that everyone slates the ps2 as a dvd player, i have a few mates who use it and are quite happy with the results. and thats without the thingy wotsit that lets you get an RGB signal out of it.
  • otto #237 10 years ago

-> Whizzo, can't watch them all at once now can I? Got to pace myself. :)

-> ssuellid, I'll probably stick the Black Books DVD down on the Christmas list. Though I did actually see an episode once.
  • Nemesis #238 10 years ago

I'm sorry to say that Yes Minister was the inspiration behind my choice of career. And I'm not joking...

Ahh. Never really watched this to be honest, but I did get to see Hawthorne in his last play at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

    Lear

    Thus.
  • Killerbee #239 10 years ago

Otto - wait till you get to the paintballing episode of Spaced. It is *true* genius. And the one Nem is on about (which is episode 3 I think) is very cool.

Then buy series 2 - it gets better and better!

PS2 as a DVD player - it's what I use, and I bought the official remote which adds a bit of functionality, but the software takes up a couple of MB on your memory card - no great concern though.

It works for me and I've not seen any other DVD players that retail for around £169 that offer anything better - plus PS2 gaming pleasures!
  • ssuellid #240 10 years ago

I use a PS2 as a DVD player for the bedroom. Even with a decent RGB cable, Region X to get rid of the green, and recent software its still shit. I've seen sub £100 players that trash it. But as a secondary feature of a console there is not much reason to complain.
  • Errol #241 10 years ago

Nigel Hawthorne = A fine actor (never seen him do anything badly)

The guy who played Jim hacker = Fine actor.

That generation really produced some fine actors. Shame they are all dead now.
  • Whizzo #242 10 years ago

I'll probably stick the Black Books DVD down on the Christmas list.

Bloody hell I knew I was right....

05:06 The name Tim Bisley is taken from the graphic artist Simon Bisley. The artwork was done by Jim Murray and Jason Brashill of 2000AD fame.

    And there we have it.
  • Alastair #245 10 years ago

'What did you do - just search google for 'alastair'??'

I've just tried that, and I didn't appear in the first 500 hits, so it's not a very good method for finding me!
  • Whizzo #246 10 years ago

    Misquoting as usual:

"Who was there for you when Johnny Alpha was killed by that flying monster thing?"

2000AD gets a lot of nods in the second series and the fact Simon Pegg actually plays Alpha in the audio series probably means that won't disappear in the next one, whenever it happens.

  • Nemesis #250 10 years ago

Looking at the episode guide I see that I only caught about a quarter of them though.

    From the website...

    QUERY: WHERE IS THE HOMAGE-O-METER?
I've had a lot of queries asking where the Homage-o-Meter is on the DVD. Clearly it's not obvious. Thing to do is this: Press your "Subtitle" button on your DVD player until it selects the second set of subtitles. These are, in fact, the homage-o-meter and details of references will appear on screen at appropriate moments. Good, eh?

Update : That's the series 2 DVD, so scrub that idea! Listen to the commentary tracks.
