Magic Made Fun Review
Because it was such a serious business before?

There are two types of people when it comes to magic tricks. (Well, three - there's those miserable sods who don't enjoy them at all, but we'll ignore them for now). The first sees a trick, is baffled by it, and feels entertained by the mystery. The second sees a trick, is baffled by it, and must know how it is done at all costs.
That second group might seem like the unlucky one. To be able to take pleasure from the mystery - that's a moment of pure joy. But needing to know how isn't necessarily a bad thing. For the first group, finding out how a trick is done is to destroy it, because the reality is that most tricks are horribly simple and disappointing. But for the second group, the simplicity is the joy - the execution, the technique and the process of being fooled - that's a beautiful thing. I'm firmly in that second group - if I see a trick I'm not only not happy until I know how it's done, but not until I've learned how to perform it myself. It's to the second group that Magic Made Fun is aimed. It's the first group who buyers should aim to impress.
It's probably important to note that Magic Made Fun isn't that good. It's far too stunted, with far too few tricks available, and for reasons unfathomable it limits your access to them by insisting you unlock new tricks by earning points, and severely limiting how many points you can earn each day. Damn it, I paid for this. Let me get at the thing I paid for! (Well, I didn't pay for it - Tom sent it to me in the post, but I'm empathising.)

However, it's a really good idea. Things are split into three sections: Solo Magic, Magic Show and Magic Training. Solo is a bunch of tricks the DS plays on you, or to whomever you hand the DS. Magic Show is a collection of tricks it teaches you to perform that involve the DS, explaining the secrets and teaching you how to execute them effectively. And Magic Training is, well, it's a collection of rather lame mini-games in the Brain Training style. Or as I consider them, a place for grinding points to open up new tricks. You know, after I've lied to my DS about it being the next day. Again.
Solo Magic is mostly made up of tricks based on mathematics, but with various means of hiding this from you. If you've ever seen Uri Geller's embarrassingly idiotic tricks where he lies to the audience telling them he's influencing their decision with the power of his mind, causing you to choose a particular planet from a circle, or whatever, you'll know the sort of thing. Anyone with an IQ above 0 will realise they could pick any starting point and receive the same results. Still, here they're presented as tricks, rather than deceit, and it can be fun the first time. Of course, do them again and you'll quickly see through how they work.
Magic Show is far closer to the grisly truth of how most magic works. A trick might involve telling your audience that the DS can psychically predict which of two candles they wish to be blown out when they blow on the mic. Or somehow know which of three objects has been silently selected. Like most magic, the solutions lie in working backward from the result until the moment of deception is identified. These can be really subtle, with the game taking specific advantage of the DS, like how easy it is to hit a shoulder button with no one seeing, or its ability to recognise different voice commands.
The presentation of these tricks is nice enough. One involves getting your mark to draw a hand on the lower screen, which they will then see animated and rising to the top-screen to grab a selected object. Others involve using the touch-screen or mic, making them tricks that could only exist on the DS, rather than a cheap attempt to copy out some ideas from a Paul Daniels Magic Set. As I said, it's a really good idea.
Not such a good idea is the utterly terrifying main character who explains everything to you. You're in Great Barbara's Magic Store you see, belonging to a woman-thing who appears to have fluffy pink wings growing out of her left breast, and seems to be wearing crotchless leggings. And um, there's something very wrong with her head. She looks like the offspring of Jessica Rabbit and NiGHTS. Frankly, she frightens me.
For some reason her wittering can't be skipped, and it's her who tells you, "You can't do any more with this game now for no reason at all, until you go into your DS settings and tell it it's tomorrow," which makes her a very hard person to like.
The Magic Training features are especially weak, consisting of some very boring patience games. It also challenges you to learn mirror writing, which is actually a useful skill for many tricks, as well as a means of training your internal clock to more accurately count seconds. Credit for that, but that's just about it. And you'll find yourself mindlessly playing through these to accrue points to unlock other tricks you've yet to see, which isn't any fun.

This is a surprisingly nice trick that takes a lot longer to figure out than most. It has an excellent punchline too.
An important feature to note is that the game comes with a pack of cards. These aren't quite to the standard of a pack of cards most trick performers would want, lacking a Bicycle Deck's air-cushioned finish and ease of handling, but they are cutely marked. While the means of identifying the card from its apparently innocuous back isn't exactly subtle for those who know to look for it, at a casual glance your audience won't spot it, and this obviously makes a whole ton of card tricks possible. The later Magic Show tricks take most advantage of these, and it's safe to say you'll effectively fool your buddies.
I do wonder whether using a DS to do tricks is ultimately that effective. While most of the tricks do not involve the DS cheating by being a machine, most audiences are going to suspect it is. When performing close-up magic you want your sleeves rolled up and your hands apparently empty - holding a device quite capable of fiddling results isn't really in the spirit of things. However, most of the tricks here, while there are very few of them, are specific to the medium, impossible without it, and make cute use of its gimmicks.
With more tricks, more variety in the Solo section, and most of all without restricting your access to the bloody tricks you paid for, this could have been surprisingly successful. As it is, it's surprisingly not awful, but very limited.

I've been a fan of magic tricks since I was about 7 so this sort of thing does actually have some appeal. It's a great idea for a DS title. Limiting the amount of daily play should be illegal though and it's a shame the mini-games aren't better.

None of my mates have spotted the marks on the cards, they're subtle enough ... so you can make up your own tricks without the DS as well.
