DS Roundup Review

DS Review by Ellie Gibson

9 July, 2008

Page 1 of 5. Page 2 ->

Imagine a game where you got to solve crimes, hunt dragons, fight armies, complete crosswords and play cards with Doctor Who. It would be amazing, of course. And it'll never happen.

However! This month's selection of DS games do allow you to do all those things, albeit individually. Whether you like your games competent, mediocre or designed to exploit the gullibility of children, there's something for everyone. So let's press on.

The Sun Crossword Challenge

ACROSS
1. What the Liverpool fans did not, in fact, do to the dead (4, 2)

Not content with sating Britain's insatiable desire for thinly disguised racism and tits, The Sun has done a crossword game. For GBP 19.99 you get more than 1000 puzzles to complete. The crosswords are just like the ones you'd find in The Sun, with the added advantage they don't have a copy of The Sun attached.

With each puzzle, you can choose from 'Coffee-Time' or 'Cryptic' clues. The answers will be the same regardless but the clues will be different - "Design on body" versus "It needn't require the Army to put on this show", for example. As you've probably surmised the Cryptic option offers more of a challenge, while you'll only occasionally find yourself stuck on the Coffee-Time puzzles.

'DS Roundup' Screenshot 2

No screenshots released for this game, just a picture of the lady hired to promote it. What a shame.

If you are stumped you can ask for missing letters to be revealed - a serious advantage electromagic crosswords have over the paper version. However, if like me you are pathetically impatient and a bit thick, you'll find yourself doing this all the time. This means you miss the satisfaction of puzzling things out. Points are deducted from your score each time you ask for a letter to be filled in, but it's hard to care.

The handwriting recognition is pretty good, and if you prefer there's an on-screen keyboard you can use instead. You can choose to pencil answers in if you're not sure they're right, and it's easy to erase mistakes - another advantage over paper crosswords. The muzak's bloody awful, but you're probably not buying The Sun Crossword Challenge because you've run out of records.

So. There's a decent number of puzzles to solve. There are two types of clues to choose from. The control system works. There aren't any extras - a dictionary might have been nice, or perhaps some extra word games. But if you're just looking for a straightforward collection of electronic crossword puzzles, and are too young to remember the coverage of the Broadwater Farm riots, The Sun Crossword Challenge will do the job.

7/10

Struggling to come up with the answer to the (4, 2) clue.

Such a shame you are giving coverage to that filthy rag on a respectable site like this.

DO NOT BUY THE SUN.

PISS ON.

As The Sun delightfully claimed Liverpool fans did to dead bodies at Hillsborough.

I know this is a games review site and as such this issue is unrelated, but I can't help asking why, seeing you are aware of the immense pain and anger this rag has caused (and still does), give it any exposure at all? Reviewing, or not, a low budget largely insignificant game wouldn't have made any difference to this site's popularity.

I wonder if they care Arbiter? (not flaming, just asking! :o)
They must have seen the increase of "angry posters" since a while back, but.. Either the cash check is big enough to swallow it, or they aint better than us posters and just says fuck it and flames back (with even worse headlines etc).

FFS, is someone handing out sense-of-humour bypasses this morning?

Yes, the Sun is unspeakably shit for all sorts of reasons, but sadly plenty of people still read it, so it's perfectly legitimate for EG to review their crossword game. And, tabloid branding aside, it's not a bad idea for a casual DS title.

As for Hillsborough - yes it was a tragic event and no one should ever forget that, but the gag was a shot at the Sun for exactly the reasons most people have come to hate what that paper stands for: sensationalist and controversy-courting headlines. If you didn't find it funny, then just move on.

I really enjoyed this round up. And I'm going to have that Cities of Gold theme going round my head all day now... :)

Fantastic piece of writing. I got half way through reading this and though... hang on, this reads like a Gibson work of art, and a quick scroll up confirmed it. (Not to mention it was a round up of naff games).

@ KillerBee.

If someone finds something offensive they should speak up - 'moving on' won't change anybody's behaviour. I've no affiliation with Liverpool in anyway but I still found the joke in poor taste - it stuck out like a sore thumb. It may have been a pop at the Sun but it did it by dragging up the same filthy imagery as they used - that's why it's a bad joke. It has nothing to do with a SOH bypass - quite the opposite.

I was about to give Ellie an A+ for including that Cure song but then she ruined it by bringing back memories of that horrible Cities of Gold cartoon.

Can't see any UUU--LEEE-SYYYS --- song/cartoon references.
Dogtanion again has no place in my memory.

To be fair, I imagine Stratego is made quite a bit more challenging by the fact that it's all in French.

The crossword and Who-games are rated "as if your are into that sort of thing". Which is fine by me. Im not, so Ill skip it, but its good to know they are solid games.

My problem is that most reviews on EG dont follow this "rule" at all.
Theres been alot of great games getting pisspoor scores just becouse the reviewer aint into that sort of thing. Shmups/brawlers/puzzlers etc.

(Sorry to bring this up again, but..)
Also, would you say MGS4 is rated from this perspective? I dont think alot of people "that are into MGS" would ever give it an 8.

Hmm, it's Doctor Who, which is good; but it's Trumps which is boring. Well, does it come with a sonic screwdriver stylus? Otherwise: No, thanks.

Did anyone else notice that EG's filename for the picture of The Sun's "stunna" is d2notitsa.jpg? Is this a comment on the girl herself, or just the way the photo's been cropped? I think we should be told!
