Zelda - Rota Ooh and Passing of the Gates trial solution in Breath of the Wild

How to solve the Central region trial.

Rota Ooh is one of the many Shrines located throughout Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The challenge inside, named the Passing of the Gates trial, is a puzzle that has you hit a crystal to spin a large mechanism, and get an orb into the socket on the other side. Get it right, and you'll walk out a success.

If you need help finding and solving other Shrines, our Shrine location maps page can help, while our Zelda: Breath of the Wild walkthrough and guide covers other aspects of the game.

Where to find Rota Ooh

The Rota Ooh shrine is located within the Central region, specifically in the south west part of the area, just a short distance west of the Outskirt Stable. To get there, you can paraglide most of the way by heading north west, from the north west corner of the Great Plateau.

Alternatively, head south west from the Central Tower, following the road to the Outskirt Stable. The shrine itself is just to the east of it, up a hill tucked behind a bit of terrain.

There's no puzzle to solve here in order to access the shrine, so simply dive in when you're ready.

After entering this shrine you'll be faced with a large wall made up of several sections: a central door, and some railing either side above passages of water, with a crystal to the far right.

Your task is to get an orb, put it in the cradle to the right by the crystal, and get it over to the other side where there's a socket.

First, hit the crystal with an arrow or anything else, and it'll spin the entire central structure away from you by one turn.

This will reveal two things: an orb, in the centre, which you should pick up and carry back towards the entrance side of the structure.

And second a path to a chest, on the far left of the structure, which contains a Small Key - used for opening the central door of the shrine.

Shoot the crystal again, this will turn the structure back to its starting position. You can now pick up and throw the orb you collected into the basket-cradle-like thing that's part of the railing to the right by the crystal.

Come back to where you started, and use the key to unlock the door before you do anything else.

Now shoot the crystal once again, and it'll tip the ball out of the cage into the socket on the other side.

That, in turn, activates a launch pad where the orb originally appeared, and now that the door's open you'll be able to hop on that launch bad and be fired up to the sky where you can paraglide above the central structure.

Paraglide over to the back wall, where you can open a chest for a Feathered Edge sword, and you'll see that the way to the exit is still blocked - so head back to the starting position on the launch pad and do it again.

Finally, you this time need to then whip out your bow mid-air, and shoot the crystal one last time - this will turn the structure again, and grant you a clear path with steps up to the exit. It sounds tricky, but with the slowed time effect of drawing a bow mid air, it shouldn't be an issue.

Head up the steps to the exit, and you're clear!
