Woo film becoming an MMO

The War of the Red Cliff.

John Woo's upcoming film The War of the Red Cliff is being made into an MMO for release later this year.

In China, that is, where regional developer and publisher Beijing Perfect World will be creating the game.

The War of the Red Cliff is based around events during the Three Kingdoms period in Ancient China, which has inspired numerous games and big-screen adaptations to date - such as Koei's Dynasty Warriors series and action film Hero.

Beijing Perfect World will be using its in-house engine Angelica to power it, and promises a realistic retelling of the battles that eventually united the country.

The developer's other game is MMO Perfect World, another traditional Chinese mythology affair already out in Eastern reaches of the world. Head over to the official website to find out more.

The War of the Red Cliff is currently filming, and is expected in cinemas next year.

John Woo is currently also collaborating with Midway to produce third-person shooter Stranglehold. This balletic blaster is inspired by the director's Hong Kong cinema romp Hard Boiled, where a tough-nut cop takes it on himself to rid the streets of an entire crime syndicate. Cue painstakingly created slow motion gunfights.
