Wii sales at 5.84 million

DS now past 40m, too.

Nintendo Wii sold 5.84 million units during its first five months on sale worldwide, Nintendo said today in a financial report which saw the company's sales and profits soar.

Nintendo DS has had a strong year too, with a combined total of 23 million DS and DS Lite units sold globally during the last fiscal year, for a total of 40 million since the console first launched in November 2004.

Software's doing pretty well too, particularly on the DS, where New Super Mario Bros. sold 9.5 million worldwide, and sales of Brain Age continued to scamper. The brain training series sold 8.08 million, for a total of 12 million units to date. Yikes.

Meanwhile, Nintendogs' strong performance persisted - it's now at 13.6 million units sold worldwide, thanks to 6.95 million more purchases in the last fiscal year.

And while Pokemon Diamond and Pearl hadn't launched outside Japan when the numbers were totted up, that didn't stop them amassing 5.21 million sales anyway.

For the next year, Nintendo promises to improve its software line-up (broaden too, please) and "further intensify" its Wii Channel activities.

This, the company believes, will "encourage communication among family members as each of them can feel something relevant to themselves and be motivated to turn on the power everyday in order to enjoy 'the new life with Wii'". How lovely.
