What happened to Xbox 360 faceplates?

"We killed that one pretty quickly" - MS.

Have you noticed that Microsoft no longer sells faceplates for Xbox 360? Yes well apparently "nobody" bought them.

"We don't ever create an accessory with the intent of having it fail," Xbox 360 global marketeer Albert Penello told OXM.

"The idea wasn't bad... people used to put faceplates on their cell phones. Rewind five years, faceplates were what everybody wanted to do.

But, he added, "It turned out nobody bought it. So we stopped making them.

"We killed that one pretty quickly," he said.

Let's rewind five years as Penello suggests, then, and to Ellie reporting the four coloured Xbox 360 faceplates that cost 15 quid each.

Here, enthusiasm abounds.

"A real selling point this one. I no longer care about 3 CPUs and 12 GPUs," declared excited Eurogamer reader snick.

"What a crappy waste of cash," cooed Derblington.

"It's like having a fricking Nokia phone four years ago," celebrated tonynibbles.

Faceplates turned out to be so popular that peripheral company Nyko invented a create-your-own faceplate kit.
