Torchlight blazes past 1 million sales

Not bad for Runic's first attempt.

Torchlight has broken one million sales combined across PC, Mac and Xbox Live Arcade.

Runic Games released Torchlight on PC in October 2009, and on Xbox Live Arcade in March 2011.

It was the first game from the studio that formed out of Hellgate developer Flagship's ashes.

Torchlight is an action role-playing game that plays like Diablo and looks like Warcraft. Sprinkle on a bit of madness and the resulting experience is one that Eurogamer heartily recommends.

Wrote Alec Meer in his Torchlight review: "Even though there is nothing new or truly unique about Torchlight, nothing at all, that it so confidently and prettily takes the fight to Blizzard is an enormous compliment about how well put-together this is." 8/10.

This year, Torchlight II arrives. The sequel brings more moddability, more customisable characters, a new user interface and, crucially, multiplayer.

A proposed July release date for Torchlight II seems to have fallen by the wayside, with the game now hovering in "2011".

You can buy Torchlight for £6.50 on Steam at the moment. Gold Xbox Live members can snap the game up for a discounted 800 Microsoft Points (£6.80).
