Toejam and Earl designer making a PlayStation game

That's "cute and filled with quirky personality".

Toejam and Earl designer Greg Johnson is making a PlayStation game.

In a post on Tech-Artists.org, Johnson revealed his studio HumaNature has started a new title "directly for Sony".

He describes it as "cute and filled with quirky personality". "It's also super innovative in the area of emotional AI and personality simulation." He said it's designed for both male and female players and will be marketed in the US and Japan (and hopefully in Europe too).

He referred potential artists to the studio's Deko Deko Facebook apps to see the art style of the game.

Johnson, who has been making games for 30 years, designed a raft of cult classic titles, including Toejam and Earl, Starflight, Star Control 2, Orly's Draw-A-Story, and, more recently, worked on Spore, The Sims 2 and Kung Fu Panda World.

Toejam and Earl was a much-loved 1991 Sega Mega Drive action platformer. The titular Toejam and Earl are alien rappers, and the game was packed with humour and pop culture references. The music was pretty good too.
