Total War: Warhammer 2's latest trailer is perhaps my favourite yet.
Creative Assembly has created fantastic cinematic in-engine trailers for its wonderful fantasy strategy game for some time, but the trailer for upcoming DLC The Warden & the Paunch somehow raises the game.
Evoking a battle from The Lord of the Rings movie, the trailer shows an army of Mad Max-style goblin chariots bearing down on an army of elves, who clash in dramatic fashion. And then the golems sprout from the ground, and then a burning phoenix smashes into the ground, and then mages fire magic bolts into the masses, and then the two faction leaders, Eltharion the Warden of Tor Yvresse, and Grom the Paunch prepare to face-off. Basically, I can't wait to watch the series finale of HBO's latest.
The trailer does the trick, but here's the official blurb:
"Long has Eltharion the Warden of Tor Yvresse stood sentinel, ever-watchful for signs of Greenskin incursion. After defeating Grom the Paunch in ages past, and scattering his hordes, Eltharion swore that no Orc or Goblin filth would ever set foot in his lands again. But Grom has other designs. His cavernous belly aches for a rematch, and his hunger for vengeance is matched only by his titanic appetite. Get ready for the WAAAGH!!!"
The Warden & the Paunch trailer is just one of a raft of wonderful Total Warhammer 2 trailers. This one, for The Shadow & the Blade DLC, is great:
The Hunter & The Beast trailer is super cool too:
Creative Assembly has a FAQ for its in-engine trailers, explaining how the Total War in-house cinematics team creates them. For in-engine cinematics such as the The Warden & the Paunch, the video uses in-development in-game assets and code as a basis for a video shot with cinematic camera techniques to create movie-like footage.
Creative Assembly continues to support Total Warhammer 2, of course, but a third game is in the works. I have high hopes for its trailers.
