Sony reveals the install size of some of its PS5 games

Drive a hard bargain.

Sony has revealed the install size of some of its PlayStation 5 games.

Insomniac's Spider-Man: Miles Morales requires a minimum of 50GB, according to the PlayStation website.

The Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Launch Edition, which includes a remaster of Spider-Man PS4, is more than double that, weighing in at 105GB minimum.

And the eye-catching Demon's Souls requires a minimum of 66GB.

(Sony has yet to reveal the install size of Destruction Allstars or Sackboy: A Big Adventure.)

It's worth keeping in mind that the PS5 comes with a custom 825GB SSD at launch. This means Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Launch Edition takes up just under 13 per cent of the PS5's SSD.

It's also worth keeping in mind that the PS5 will let you install certain parts of games, keeping that overall install footprint down. I doubt you'll need the remaster of Spider-Man PS4 on your SSD if all you want to do is play Spider-Man: Miles Morales, for example.

And, of course, you can expand the PS5's internal storage with an off-the-shelf SSD - although expect to burn a hole in your wallet for one that's compatible with the console's bandwidth specifications: 5.5GB/s Read Bandwidth (Raw). Here's Digital Foundry's Richard Leadbetter offering advice back in March:

"... expandable storage is possible and you won't need proprietary drives from Sony to get the extra space you want. However, in the short term at least, the advice is simple: don't buy an NVMe drive without Sony validation if you plan to use it in PS5. Also remember that extreme bandwidth PCIe 4.0 NVMe drives are likely to be very expensive - in the short term, at least. This is cutting-edge technology, after all. Obviously though, the outlook should improve significantly as the next generation progresses - and prices do tend to drop significantly over time."

While these install sizes don't seem too bad compared with some of the massive install sizes we've seen this generation (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, I'm looking at you), it's clear that if you're sticking with the PS5's internal storage, it may fill up fast.

And here's the console comparison: the Xbox Series X comes with a 1TB custom NVMe SSD for internal storage, while the Xbox Series S has a 512GB custom NVMe SSD.
