Skyrim PC saves that use mods don't work with Special Edition

You'll kneed to start over.

If you've been playing The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim with mods on PC (and, chances are, you probably have) then your save file probably won't work with the newly released Special Edition of the game.

Here's what a document supplied with the Skyrim Special Edition review version said:

"Existing save games from the original PC game will work in the PC version of Skyrim Special Edition. Simply copy your old saves from My Games/Skyrim to My Games/Skyrim Special Edition. Only use original saves that have never been used with mods. Do not use your original save game if this error appears when you load it in Skyrim Special Edition: 'This save relies on content that is no longer present.'"

The original Skyrim, and Skyrim Special Edition, are considered two different games. Whether there are any workarounds for save-file compatibility regarding playing with certain mods remains to be seen - testing will need to be done.

Given the differences, mods will need to be altered to work with the Special Edition too.

Skyrim Special Edition launches today on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. It's most high profile feature is mod support for consoles, because mods are great. We've cobbled together everything you need to know about Skyrim remastered in a separate article.

Jim Trinca also yesterday went into depth about what Skyrim had that Fallout 4 didn't.

And this just in: Ian is live-streaming Skyrim Special Edition AKA remastered from 2pm UK time today.
