Gear VR's consumer version will ship this November for $99

UPDATE: Ships next week in the US, pre-orders available now.

UPDATE 10/11/2015 6.37pm: Samsung's Gear VR headset is shipping in the US on 20th November. Pre-orders are currently available on Amazon, Best Buy and Samsung's online store.

ORIGINAL STORY 24/09/2015 6.35pm: Samsung's retail model of Gear VR, the virtual reality headset it's been developing with Oculus, will ship worldwide this November at $99 (about £65).

It will be compatible with all of Samsung's latest smartphones, including the Galaxy Note 5, S6, S6 Edge, and the S6 Edge Plus.

It's also 22 per cent lighter than the previous developer focused model and features a redesigned touchpad. This should make it more comfortable to wear and use.

"We see virtual reality as the next computing platform, and we are thrilled to partner with Oculus on Gear VR to set the standard for mobile VR and bring this revolutionary product to consumers," said JK Shin, CEO and president of IT & Mobile Division for Samsung.

Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe added, "Together with Samsung, we've redefined virtual reality and created the best mobile VR experience available today."

Samsung's VP of mobile Peter Koo noted during his keynote at Oculus Connect 2 (via Polygon) that the new model will make it the US in time for Black Friday on 27th November, and will hit the rest of the world shortly after.
