Resident Evil 7 - Mutated Jack boss fight, Boat House and who to cure with the serum

A complete walkthrough and guide to each area in Capcom's survival horror adventure.

The Mutated Jack boss fight and Boat House follows the completion of the Testing Area and its Party Room. Before you can access the boss fight, there is a safe house and some enemies to fight - or, if you're savvy about it, avoid entirely.

If you're after help for parts of the game, consult our complete Resident Evil 7 walkthrough and guide.

How to explore the Boat House

Head down the walkway, and at the fork, go right then right to the outhouse, where there's some consumables - we found Burner Fuel and a Chem Fluid within the crates - and most importantly, a Mr Everywhere statue trapped underneath the netting on the ground.

Go opposite, where you can use the Crank again to raise a bridge opposite. There's more ammo just here - in the crate right, and MAG Ammo on the left hidden away - then head back to the fork.

On the way you'll encounter a number of enemies, which you can simply sprint and outrun into the Boat House building itself, the first room of which is a safe room, killing the enemies instantly.

In the safe room, there's all kinds of consumables out the in the open - we found a Herb, Shotgun Shells, Flame Rounds, Chem Fluids, and much more. With the Item Box just here, grab the lot. Put the Crank away - you won't need it again - and bring the D-Series Arm and D-Series Head with you.

When you're ready head upstairs and approach the pair for a cutscene. Hand over the serum ingredients, and a boss fight will begin.

Mutated Jack boss fight

This huge monstrosity isn't as scary as it looks. It has orange eyes all over its body, and your job is to shoot and destroy each one. A couple of shotgun blasts, or one Grenade Launcher round will do it.

Since his body parts can move quickly, we'd recommend shotgun blasts up close and using the Grenade Launcher at a distance.

Shoot Mutated Jack's glowing orange eyes to weaken it.

Start by shooting the nearest and most visible parts to begin with, then drop down to the area below. You have two floors of the building to play with, and you'll use that to your advantage.

The best tactic is to move floors, shoot it from afar, get another shot or two in as it climbs up, then go to the other floor. The ladder from the basement up is to the side, and beware that you can get swiped while climbing, so wait until he's just moved or attacked before heading up.

The boss will telegraph its moves with plenty of time - or if you stay on the same level as it long enough - so try and back away into one of the corners and shield with your arm if you can. Also, if you're struggling for consumables, there's some in the corners you can grab, ideally when he's moving floors and preoccupied.

If at one point it looks like there are no more eyes to shoot, then you're probably missing those on its underbelly. When it's on the upper level, go below and look up, and as it moves you should see them.

Once all weak points have been destroyed, it'll drop and convulse, and the door out will open. After the cutscene, you can smash a couple of crates around you, then leave the building.

Who to cure with the serum - Mia or Zoe?

After the boss is over, you'll walk to the end of the pier and are given a choice with who to cure with the remaining serum - Mia or Zoe?

So - who to choose? In our experience in the Eurogamer office where two of us made different choices, the outcomes ultimately appear to be the same in terms of story beats and mechanics, though you'll have a slightly different ending (with corresponding Achievement and Trophy) for each. We'll do some more digging in the coming days to double check, but until then, choose whoever you feel is best and watch the cutscene, taking you to the Wrecked Ship area.
