PUBG Xbox One controls, server connection issues plus features and differences between Battlegrounds on Xbox One and PC explained

Everything you need to know about the console version of one of 2017's biggest games.

PUBG on Xbox One gives console players a taste of one of the year's biggest games, with Microsoft itself pitching in to translate the Steam Early Access smash hit to Xbox One just in time for Christmas.

Early indications suggest a faithful port, though with a handful of Xbox One differences including controls, visuals and feature differences.

What to do about Xbox One PUBG server and connection issues

The launch of PUBG on Xbox One has seen some server and connection issues, which isn't uncommon for an online game, especially one expecting such high demand.

If you are having issues, try:

  • Changing your server to your region, by pressing the Menu button on the title screen
  • Checking the official Twitter account for notices of downtime or specific issues
  • General troubleshooting fixes, such as restarting the game, your console or router, using a wired connection and open NAT type, and your checking your connection speed
  • Trying again later

As with other online games, fingers crossed that - after the excitement of launch has died down - connecting to games will become easier.

PUBG Xbox One Controls and controller layout for how to aim down sights, reload and more

One key difference between the PC and Xbox One version is the mandatory use of a controller versus keyboard and mouse.

According to Microsoft, translating the controls to console has required the assistance of both the Xbox Advanced Technology Group and Gears of War developer The Coalition to help get it just right.

Since the game requires you to run, fight, swim and drive, there are a few control schemes to pick up and learn:

A few takeaways on the above:

  • The X button is dual use, where holding X will reload and a tap will interact with objects, such as opening (and just as important for hiding your tracks, closing) doors.
  • The d-pad is used to equip melee weapons or grenades, change fire modes and use consumables.
  • Grenades require both trigger buttons to use (left trigger charge, right throw).
  • Instead of awkwardly pressing multiple keys to change seats while inside a vehicle, on Xbox it's a simple case of pressing the A button. Of course, it sounds like you have to cycle through that specifically choose the one you want.
  • When viewing the map, press the right stick in to place a marker - perfect for deciding where to move to next.

PUBG Xbox One and Xbox One X differences over PC

As the Xbox One version of Battlegrounds is launching in Xbox Game Preview - the console version of Steam's Early Access - it won't be the same as the currently available full-release edition of the game on PC.

Gameplay and feature differences

  • The Xbox One version, as of May 2018, now finally has the desert map Miramar available to play too!
  • Though it won't feature all of 1.0's additions, according to PlayerUnknown himself Brendan Greene it include key aspects such as vaulting - allowing players to briskly climb walls, which is not only useful for getting around easier, but allows players to reach all important higher vantage points.
  • Though the Xbox version will be "slightly behind", expect a "pretty regular update cadence" as per the the PC version when it was in Early Access.
  • Only third-person servers will be available at launch, with first-person mode coming "eventually". Until then, you are free to switch to first-person in third-person servers if that's preferred - but note the third-person respective has its advantages.
  • Due to its online nature, playing Battlegrounds on Xbox requires an Xbox Live Gold subscription.
  • The Xbox One file size is 5.24GB.
  • There is a Warrior Pack DLC for a limited time and launch, featuring a balaclava, camouflage T-shirt, plus unique pants and tennis shoes.

Visual and technical differences

  • Both Xbox One and Xbox One X versions will run up to 30 frames per second, despite previously suggesting a higher framerate for the more powerful X. Greene added it is "constantly refining the game and exploring options" to increase this. Though not specifically mentioned as the reason, ensuring a level playing field for all users is likely the reason behind the cap.
  • The Xbox One X version will support HDR.
