SEGA confirms Shinobi for 3DS

The action looks joyfully gonzo (doing flips on the wings of an airborne fighter jet?), but I'm not crazy about the art direction. The key factor though is how it plays...

Miyamoto plots global Mii domination

yagisencho

I love the whimsical nature of the Miis, and the flexibility of facial feature placement allows people to really challenge themselves creatively. That said, the aged, Anpanman-style bodies just don't work as in-game avatars. It feels cheap and lazy. Here's hoping they bring the update/upgrade to both the 3DS and Wii...

New NGP details emerge at private event

So the NGP is a handheld PS3 minus the Blu-Ray? But I thought Sony said that Blu-Ray is the future...

Snark aside, that's impressive. It sounds like PSN games should translate straight across.

Yars Revenge trailer shows game world

yagisencho

From what little they showed of it here, the gameplay doesn't seem to resonate with the original game. That said...if they pull it off, it could make the VCS original seem like a movie adaptation after-the-fact.

In other words, were the Atari VCS games templates for future games, or were they echoes of games that already existed in the future? ;)

Nintendo defends 3DS region lock

yagisencho

Dislike.

The only argument he cites that passes the smell test is 'content may not be available to some markets'. While this is true, caveat emptor. Why can't they just honestly state that they don't want to 1) further complicate relationships between developers and publishers and 2) impact local market sales with gray market imports?

I've been importing DS games for the better part of a decade, primarily titles that will never be released in the US (e.g., kanji dictionary, early Japanese learning games for my daughter). And now this. Bah.

Mass Effect 2 demo: PS3 vs. Xbox 360

yagisencho

I'm thinking that the PC version trumps the console versions, but my $10 copy of the 360 version arrives this week from Amazon. I'm curious to see though if the PC version's rendering glitch toward the end of 'Archangel's' loyalty mission repros on the console.

BioWare Doctors talk EA Louse, Mass Effect 3, SWTOR

yagisencho

They certainly talked *around* Mass Effect 3, but I was suprised that they were so cagey about it. It sounds like they're working on additional ME2 DLC. And at the same time, it sounds like they're working on additional ME material, but not necessarily ME2. Which one is it? Based on this interview, it's hard to tell.

Either way though, more Mass Effect = goodness.

Nintendo: Apple is our greatest threat

yagisencho

Nintendo's job with the 3DS is to create a platform that embraces the strengths of the iPhone while providing innovative, device-specific functionality. It seems like they have the latter. Time will tell if they've figured out the former. The shopping experience needs to be leagues better than the current WiiWare and DSiWare approaches though if they hope to stand a chance at capturing that market.

MS investigates sweatshop allegations

yagisencho

From the original article:

"According to worker estimates, Microsoft accounts for the largest proportion of production at KYE, about 30 percent, and their production is consistent. Other major corporations outsourcing production to KYE include: Hewlett Packard, Best Buy, Samsung, Foxconn, Acer, Wi/IFC/Logitech and Asus-Rd."

I'm glad the factory is being investigated; this type of labor mistreatment must be stopped. Curious though that EG's article summary failed to mention that Microsoft sponsors a third of the factory's output, rather than it being specifically a Microsoft manufacturing plant.

Drop the 2600/Intellivision prices down to 80 points/game and then I *might* buy a few of them over time. The *best* arcade titles of the 70s and 80s are certainly worth 240 points though. I'd even be willing to spend 400 points on the best titles of the 90s (like I was hoping XBLA would provide).

Just Cause 2 will not support Windows XP

yagisencho

I think they've made the right business decision.

1) Most computer buyers never upgrade their graphics hardware (gamers != most computer buyers).
2) Game publishers aren't targeting their new AAA titles to owners of single core, DX9, WinXP-based machines.
3) Most people who bought new machines over the past 2-3 years are running either Vista or Win7.
4) Testing costs money, and WinXP is losing market share to Win7.
5) WinXP extended support ends in 2012.
6) New machines with dedicated graphics cards are all DX10 or DX11 based.
7) Gamers who own DX10 and DX11 cards want to titles to take advantage of the new APIs.

PC version of Alan Wake officially binned

yagisencho

Given simultaneous release on the XBox 360 and PC, I choose the PC edition every time. And this is one of the reasons why we won't be seeing a PC version of Alan Wake; Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division President Robbie Bach grows his division if the XBox business does well. PC game sales can only hurt his business (though they help influence Windows customer loyalty).

Sigh.

Tech Analysis: Mass Effect 2

yagisencho

ZuluHero asked,
"Do people find if they quit out of ME2 and reload the game fresh that the game loads stuff alot faster?"

There's a bug affecting multi-core procs. If you notice hangs during map transitions:
1) Bring up Task Manager at the Windows desktop
2) Right-click on the MassEffect2.exe process
3) Select Set Affinity...
4) On the Processor Affinity dialog, deselect all but one core, click OK
5) Select Set Affinity... again
6) On the Processor Affinity dialog, select , click OK

Depending on your rig, the map transitions should become nearly instantaneous.

Yamauchi: GT5 not using all PS3's power

yagisencho

@rodpad If GT4 is anything to go by, it's everything *but* a racing game. "The real driving simulator" is just that - an algorithmic representation of driving cars with particular specs along texture mapped courses. Polyphony Digital make high quality software, but I would never call their products 'racing games'. And that's why I sold my copy of GT4 after a few weeks' use. If I want to *drive* a car, I'll step out to my garage.

Hirai: Judge PS3 after five years

yagisencho

Only PS3 games will be breaking the 40gb barrier, and that's just to include more FMV or non-compressed textures. The vast majority of games fit on on dual-layer DVDs (9gb) and most fit on single-layer (4.5gb).

Sony also seems to be speaking out both sides of its mouth here, what with the PSP Go being download-only. And hm...Steam seems to be doing quite well on the PC, even with titles that take up 10gb+ hard disk space.

(This isn't a knock on the PS3, I'm just tired of Hirai trying to blow smoke up my ass.)

Natural Born Killer

yagisencho

I would do this on occasion in Oblivion - clearng each town of all living things. It was repetitive, expensive (for potions and repairs), left me without vendors, and made a little part of me die inside. In short, exactly what Alexander describes.

Ultimately it just breaks the game. It's like shooting holes in a cinema screen while watching a movie, or ripping pages out of a book before you've read them. Yes, you can do it, but it robs the experience of its inherent value.

The Making of World of Warcraft

yagisencho

For me, WoW is very nearly the perfect game. You can play it as casually or as hard core as you want (on the PvE servers anyway). I played PvE from release for 16 months, then played PvP for 8 months following the release of BC. Two years of some of the most fun I've had in a game.

I found though that the end game devolved into gear, reputation, and/or battle grounds grinding, which I didn't care much for. There was also a nagging feeling that my life was slipping quietly away as I played. So I've been WoW-free for 15 months and counting. Can't say that I'm not tempted to see what I've been missing in the LK expansion though...

SEGA unveils Monkey Ball: Step & Roll

yagisencho

I'd love to play it, but only if they manage to make it less finicky than Nintendo's own take on the theme (the bubble river course in Wii Fit). I don't know if it's just a problem with my foot size (EU 45), but the effect was like using a platter-sized D pad to control my onscreen avatar.

Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition

The PC controls are a bit wonky when using the new asset overlay, but all of the commands have keyboard shortcuts, so all is forgiven. I played the original through enough times that I could probably write a FAQ from memory, and yet I'm still enjoying this greatly. Although the animation hasn't really changed, the voice acting is uniformly excellent.
