Performance Analysis: Firewatch

Disclaimer: Coder currently finishing a PS4 Unity game...

It's easy to blame the middleware for perf issues like this, but the truth is that without the colossal leg-up that middleware gives smaller devs you wouldn't see games like this at all, or at least of this quality. The days of writing bespoke engines which can extract the best from the platform are ending. Devs are faced with a choice of using middleware or finding a huge chunk of funding to pay for a large dedicated tech team.

What's the deal with steering wheels for PS4 and Xbox One?

whoslotte

This isn't a huge issue really, as anyone serious to dump a few hundred quid on a steering wheel will more than likely be playing simulators on PC that are much better than either Gran Turismo or Forza. iRacing, LFS, Assetto Corsa to name a few.

Don't be surprised that just 2.2% of F2P players spend money

whoslotte

F2P uses the same model as a Casino... It's the small minority of big spenders that keep the place afloat. It's a clear winner on a pure revenue breakdown. Problem for me is the question of whether it is a good model morally. Big spenders in Casino's either have more money than sense, or an addiction problem. People with more money than sense don't need our help, but people with addiction problems or issues with compulsive behaviour should not be used to justify a business model - morally speaking, in my opinion.

It's clear that gamers are pushing back against F2P in a big way, so who exactly are these 'whales' that seem compelled to spend big money on games like Candy Crush ? Are they normal everyday phone users who are getting caught up in an addictive feedback loop ? Would you feel good about making money from these people ?

I've played F2P games and spent a few quid here and there, but I don't bother with any F2P stuff anymore... I'm done with it. I must be one of the lucky 98% of players who don't suffer from an addictive personality or oversized wallet.

Sony commits to 2014 release for PS4 racer Driveclub

whoslotte

I have no doubt that the dozens of coders, artists, designers and producers on DC are putting in a monumental effort to get this troubled game out the door, but when Sony PR butter the reality up so much it smacks as totally disingenuous.

My guess would be street date of November, with a couple of big functional patches through to Feb'15.

Then my hope is that the end of the *next* financial year doesn't see Sony 'optimise its organisation' once more and see a lot of talented and dedicated folks out on their arses.

PlayStation 3D: Performance Analysis

whoslotte

Problem here is that we've had shutter 3d tech for over a decade and it's never seriously taken off. I remember playing Quake2 with shutters in 3D and it made the aiming much harder. I fail to see how this 'new' 3d push is going to be any better. It's expensive, has possible health implications, and for most games reduces visual fidelity. Sure, used in the right place and in e right context 3D is awesome, but for mainstream gaming I fail to see how it's going to be anything other than a sideshow. The cynical part of me thinks this is just Sony pushing consumers to upgrade again... Now that everyone has finally bought a flatscreen TV they are being encouraged to think it's not good enough and to buy another new TV.

Maybe next generation the quality sacrifice will be small enough to make 3D serious, for for current hardware it feels like a step too far. Expensive TVs and silly glasses don't make the non-enthusiast happy. I just don't see this tech going anywhere interesting outside of the niche AV nerd gamer community.

Full list of OnLive pricing options

whoslotte

Epic fail. If this is the future you can keep it. Pay subs to gain access to games you buy but never own. Then you play them in reduced quality and increased lag. All this so I don't have to own kit which I already have and is cheap.

I feel for the saps who poured money into this catastrophe, I really do. Next they'll be reeling out 3D as the next big thing again... 8)

EA Warrington studio closed

whoslotte

That studio was fucked a long time ago. Miserable devs who constantly had their work canned by head office with the whole studio treated like the EA whipping boy up north. In the 6+ years it's been operating I can't think of a single title they got out the door. I'm gutted for the people who have lost their jobs. And the offer of relocation is simply not realistic for most devs with families these days. They may as well have offered to relocate them to the moon. I hope everyone gets sorted.
