Nintendo Switch, one year on

vyseofhr

If Pokémon comes out in the 2nd half of this year (still a question mark, admittedly, but I think they’ll prime it for E3 and then release winter 2018) then it’s future is pretty much secured. With Switch they’ve pretty much found their Blue Ocean which is why I think the others will follow suit eventually with machines that have more grunt.

I really want to support the developer with this, but I have the First Print edition on Wii U and what with the ‘10 new games’ challenge I’m embarking on this year, B2 Switch misses the cut.

Payday 2 announced for Nintendo Switch

vyseofhr

What's encouraging is that they chose to reveal a relatively (not triple A perhaps, but certainly well-known) high profile third-party title during a Direct a month before E3. Makes you hopeful that there is more quality third-party stuff on the way.

Nintendo Switch reveal live report

vyseofhr

As a concept, Switch looks brilliant. Really well thought out and an easy sell. Really liked the look of 1-2 Switch and ARMS. BoTW sells itself.

It's so easy to tell that third parties are highly reluctant yet again though.

Fast Racing Neo review

vyseofhr

I'm still a little surprised there weren't any Nintendodollars chucked at this to bring it up to scratch presentationally speaking and release it as a Ninty-published boxed title.

It's been obvious for a while this was going to be a bit of a gem on the track and it strikes me that it could have been a cheap and efficient way to get a further, quality, release on the schedule.

Brilliant, brilliant game that just keeps on getting bigger.

It's amazing that Nintendo can even ace the shooter genre when they turn their mind to it. They may be backwards, go against trends and in desperate need of improving the allocation of their resources, but by christ they're still the best game developers in the world, hands down.

The enduring appeal of Nintendo's StreetPass

vyseofhr

I still use my 3DS every day, and it goes everywhere with me too. Now I'm living in rural Sweden, streetpasses are much more difficult to come by than they ever were at home in the UK, but I still get that same little buzz every time I see the little green light of joy is glowing in the corner of the console.

Streetpass and Play Coins were a masterstroke, and a brilliantly connective way to ensure you carry your machine with you. It's just a shame more people don't know about it as I've had to directly show an awful lot of people how the functionality works before they've begun to use it.

PewDiePie is starring in his own game

vyseofhr

@Foolish_Monkey Just FYI (I don't like him either), but he's Swedish. The accent probably comes from the fact that most Scandinavians naturally have American accents when they speak English, due to TV and stuff, crossed with the fact that he lives in the UK.

Everything else you've said is spot on though.

Nintendo NX is "new hardware with a brand new concept"

vyseofhr

Nintendo X Platform if you ask me.

Single, unified device capable of HD display both on the go and when connected to a TV. More shelf space for a single Nintendo device, and cuts down on development cost and timescales to pool resources to a single system. Makes perfect sense.

As for the mobile stuff? Meh.

Ironfall Invasion review

vyseofhr

I've had some fun with it. The single player is barely even worth mentioning, but the lag free 3v3 deathmatches have held my attention for half an hour to an hour at a time.

As mentioned, for a three man team, it's an incredible technical achievement, it's just a shame that it wears its influences a bit too nakedly on its sleeve and doesn't have many new ideas of its own. A slightly bigger team with some creative pedigree could have made this a very good game, rather than just a moderately enjoyable diversion.

Metroid Prime remains one of Nintendo's finest games

vyseofhr

@WAusJackBauer

That's a load of rubbish. Nintendo EAD and Nintendo R&D1 (I think) collaborated with Retro.

Retro initially were making the game as a third person shooter, but Miyamoto was so disatisfied with what they'd produced up until a certain point that Nintendo brought in their own developers to steer the project in the right direction from that point onward.

What Retro accomplished with Prime is amazing, but to say it's not made by Nintendo at all is plain incorrect.

Games of 2014: Lego The Hobbit

vyseofhr

I completed this to 100%, and quite honestly enjoyed every minute. As the author of the article expressed, it's the open-world Middle Earth that is the star of the game, and the thing that ultimately kept me coming back for more. Howard Shore's score deserves a mention too; it adds huge dollops of atmosphere to the locales in the game/world.

The less said about the original voice work in the game, however, the better.

Probably worth noting that Ubisoft, until Just Dance last week, didn't release a single retail Wii U title in that period. So it's no wonder the figure stands at 0% really.

Edit: for clarification, that's the FY 2014/2015 six months posted above.
