Sounds like Cyberpunk 2077 decided against multiplayer

udat

@LawnmowerDuck Weirdly I can't reply to your most recent comment. Anyway, yeah, a co-op multiplayer mode might be interesting, but I totally agree on the last point. I trust CDProjekt to make a great game no matter which direction they go though.

@LawnmowerDuck The word "multiplayer" is redundant when talking about pen and paper RPGs (apart from a couple of corner cases perhaps) because yes, you'd typically have a group of players. I thought you might be wondering if they were making something along the lines of Neverwinter Nights, with a DM as well as regular players.

@LawnmowerDuck in the sense that all pen and paper RPGs are "multiplayer" in that as a minimum there'd be a GM and a player..?

@n0signal While I kinda agree it should be cheaper (or should have been a pack-in title) I've probably had 30 quid's worth of fun out of 1-2 Switch. I've played it in groups at a couple of family events and it has gone down very well, and people of all ages have a good time playing it together. It's also nice to have a game that's completely different from other games.

Star Citizen alpha 3.0 lands, Squadron 42 gameplay revealed

udat

@The_shlaaaag_returns Squadron 42 is why I backed the thing in the first place - a new Wing Commander-esque game, with Mark Hamill no less. I'm not excited yet (the dog fighting in that video didn't really look fun) but I'm still hopeful.

Slightly concerned by all the unnecessary faffing around for every action in the name of immersion. Stuff that might be cool once, but that you want to skip on every subsequent mission. Don't forget it's a *game* guys.

LA Noire's Switch download version doesn't fit on a Switch

udat

@omniscient Yep, I knew that's what you were getting at, but I was just trying to offer an alternative type of ambition that Nintendo might hold. Horizon looks and sounds like a great game that I would enjoy, so I'm not saying all that horsepower has no place and nothing to offer, but I am very glad that the Switch sacrificed horsepower for portability. The ability to take my games with me when I leave the house has vastly increased the time I spend playing them. Zelda could have been prettier if it was running on a static console with more grunt, but I'd have played it way less.
0 0

udat

@omniscient I think it depends on how you measure ambition... the Wii, DS, Wii U, and the Switch have all pushed unique hardware and ideas in gaming and interaction in a way that the Xbox and Playstation haven't with their consoles. They are just "more of the same" with each generation. The Kinect and the Eyetoy were innovative. The Move was a bit of a jump on a bandwagon. Jury still out on PSVR.

I kinda like the fact that the internal storage is limited. It means that all non-indie titles (which tend to be larger) I buy are physical carts, so they have resale value. The limited storage also means there is a real incentive for "day 1" patches to either not be necessary, or be as small as possible.

If those factors provide an incentive for developers to release well-tested software that works out of the box, then I am all for that.

Nintendo Switch's handheld mode more popular than playing on TV

udat

@SuperSoupy About 3-3.5 hours. Can be charged from any USB port (rate varies with port/charger) so for example, I got 7+ hours out of it playing Zelda on a plane using the crappy seat-back USB port.

Power banks also work well with it, and there are cases that have integrated power banks available.

It took Nintendo Switch just six months to hit half the Wii U's lifetime sales

udat

@rosshuts I'd get one. I've played more games on my Switch than I ever managed to on my Xbox or PC. Local impromptu multiplayer is amazing - 2 player mario kart and Arms in a few spare minutes with friends has been really fun. Also the online service is perfectly adequate for playing online. MK8 and Splatoon have been good fun online. The "friends" stuff could be improved, sure, but I can live with it. I don't miss having netflix on it or anything like that.

Nintendo's incredible year continues, but not without a few minor casualties along the way

udat

@pelican_ That's true; I had completely forgotten about Amiibo. I haven't indulged, and haven't felt like I have missed out on anything, but I can see some completionists really getting rinsed.

My understanding of them is that you always know which Amiibo unlocks what, rather than the random component of loot boxes, but my understanding could be wide of the mark.

@CalamityJames I see old Porkface beat me to the reply. Oh well.

Anyway, ARMS is great fun - the game I have played the most local-multiplayer on the Switch by far. I still suck tho.
0 0

udat

@CalamityJames What it means in Nintendo's case is that there is a steady stream of updates, free of charge, post release. So for Arms that has been new fighters, features, etc. and for Splatoon and Splatoon 2 it has been new maps, weapons, etc.

No microtransactions. No loot boxes. I really hope it stays that way.

@HotCoffee said: In order to judge how well game mechanics work together to form a cohesive gameplay experience, you must be able to navigate said game mechanics to at least some minimal level. As we've seen recently with journalists posting videos on Doom and Cuphead, that's sometimes not the case.

Right, but the video of the guy playing Cuphead wasn't a review, and was posted because it was funny how crap he was at it. That said video engendered such a shitstorm is ridiculous.

Btw, how do you do quotes properly here? :D

udat

@Malek86 Which bit did you struggle with? While there are some challenging bits, usually if you have the right ship it makes a massive difference to the difficulty... e.g. persuading Fwiffo to join you early on gives you a fantastically capable fighter that makes several early encounters far more survivable.

Are loot boxes gambling?

udat

@The-Doctor Maybe the difference is because it's money in your example. If it was some abstracted token of value it may be ruled differently... especially if that token can only be redeemed by you.

So if you "won" a bit of paper in your lucky dip with a serial number on it, and that serial number could be redeemed with you for various services of differing "value" then it might not be gambling any more. It would certainly seem like a physical analog of the loot box system they decided is not gambling.

John Lewis briefly sold the SNES mini last night - but for some it did not go well

udat

@Pyromanta I think their main constraint may be availability of parts, but I agree completely that their ordering systems could be far better. I think I am more frustrated by the fact that I can't even place a back-order than the fact that I have to wait for sufficient stock to be manufactured.
1 0

udat

@Pyromanta Right, but there's cash flow and risk management to take into consideration. There's loads of reasons why Nintendo's manufacturing capacity can't meet the initial demand, and that's mainly because if their capacity _could_ match the initial demand, then they'd have excess capacity all the rest of the time. Let's say 1.2 million people want a SNES Mini. From a risk and cash flow perspective it is far better for Nintendo to make 100k units per month for a year than it is to make 1.2 million of them and sell them in the first month.

@Perjoss It was quite heavily discounted once the film was out of theaters. I bought one, and while it wasn't really worth the money, I do have one great memory. I took it to my brother's and my 5 and 6 year old nephews were entranced by it. They talked to BB-8 and asked it questions about Luke and Han and so on and I could make it nod, shake its head, act scared, etc. from the app. It was great fun.
