Eurogamer's Top 50 Games of 2017: 50-41

Heh, that'll teach me not to skim-read. I thought Eurogamer had completely disappeared up its own arse with comments like "I tell you what, PES 2018 is better than Martin Amis."

For someone who hasn't played any of the Shin Megami Tensei games, would anyone recommend any of the 3DS ones that are on sale? I know they aren't main releases in the series. If it's any help, I do like Fire Emblem/FF Tactics type games, so would either of the Devil Survivor ones be a decent buy?

Grammar, Sir Paul. I'm sure you could find another word to rhyme with "sky" if you thought hard enough (popular choices in lazy songwriting: fly, high etc).

If they hadn't changed the goalposts so spectacularly at first, they would still have an order from me. £399.99 with a game is perfectly fine so I would have changed to that deal - as it was, that wasn't on the table when they emailed me so I cancelled.

@Toothball But they (Game, where I got it on Monday) don't take any money, or card details, or personal details - there's absolutely no commitment or compulsion to spend any money, at any point. I don't know how I can be any clearer than this

Jesus, does no-one read!? FFFrrrr!

No-one needs to pay anything - go to Game, tell them you'd like to pre-order, they take £0 with no commitment for you to buy the game, and they give you a disk with this on. I did it earlier.

Edit - just opened it, it's not a disc it's just a code in a box. Fuck you environment!

Well that's the end of gt5 for me then, back to lovefilm it goes. I only get 15gb of mobile broadband a month! Although at ps3 download speeds it'll probably take a month anyway.

GDC: OnLive to stream games to TVs, PCs

tonyferrino

It's an iteration. An evolution. We didn't instantaneously stumble upon quad-core processors, or 20Mb broadband. If it's 720p for now...fine. It's just as good as most people get from their PS3 or 360 and most of those find that perfectly acceptable. As the tech is refined, it'll get better.

I'm not sure why people are against this (from a gamer's point of view). What are the real downsides to us?

It's got respectable names behind it with experience in the field, so I don't think it's likely to be a scam.

60 fps is one frame every 16.6ms, if I'm not mistaken. They claim to be able to receive and calculate the user interaction per frame, and that takes about 1ms, then another 1ms to encode and compress that frame, leaving 14ms for the data (only 1 frame, remember) to shoot down the wires. I suppose that is do-able if the connection is sufficiently speedy and their compression algorithm is as good as they claim.

It's not a terrible idea - it's a fantastic idea. Whether it turns out to be fantastic in practice is another matter.

If it was rolled out today, I doubt many people would get much benefit from it at the highest resolutions (needs 5Mb) but with BT's rollout of faster BB, it could be feasible in a few years. However, some lucky folks certainly could use it, and if it worked for them the publishers would continue to support it while the infrastructure caught up.

Speaking of publishers, if it didn't work, I doubt so many big ones would have registered their interest in it.

IGN says they were sceptical, but tried it in an admittedly controlled environment, and it worked. The open beta in the summer will be the test of true functionality, IMO.

The probable nail in the coffin, though, could be download limits. It would be easy to eat up a month's limit in a few hours.

Dunno why people are getting hung up about a couple of QTEs. The actual level gameplay sounds ground-breaking. If it gives you anywhere near the freedom to use your powers that the preview implies, it'll be brilliant.

MS claims 40 percent GTA IV attach rate

tonyferrino

So, just over 500,000 copies of GTA4 were sold, and 40% of 360s sold had a copy with them - therefore 200,000 copies were in a bundle and 300,000 were sold on their own?

That either looks good or bad depending on what side of the fence you are on. 200,000 new consoles is a great jump in user base and earning potential, but 300,000 sold to the current user base doesn't sound so impressive.
