To the Batmobile? The trouble with Arkham Knight's biggest addition

tiddles

The key to driving the Batmobile is - take your foot off the accelerator through the corners! Well, not every corner, but if you start doing this you'll soon find cornering and power sliding becomes second nature, and very satisfying. The Batmobile is not actually "light" at all, but if you apply too much power when turning you get oversteer, which gives you the impression of it being slidey and uncontrollable. Floor it coming out of the turn to emerge from the power slide. As others have said, it's also good to set the Battle Mode to toggle, as you get a much more intuitive button layout than the default.

Driver: San Francisco's MOT

tiddles

Played a few hours of the full game, and it's excellent - the story aspect really shouldn't work, but it does, and it's a big part of what makes the game a lot of fun to play. The handling is really satisfying too. And I thought the demo was terrible...

Deus Ex, the point where you are captured and held hostage. As you fight your way through the prisoner blocks, administration wings and creepy science labs you finally break through a door into.... into.... WAIT A MINUTE!!! Haven't I been here before?

This was the one that sprang to mind for me! Great idea for an article, by the way.

I have a question about the Helghast soldiers...

The wiki page isn't quite right - the masks are basically filters which reduce the deadly effect of Helghan's atmosphere, but don't eliminate it entirely, though later generations have become more resistant through genetic adaptation. Mask-wearing also has social and political significance for the Helghast, as well as being an integral part of their military uniforms, which is probably the most likely explanation of why they wear them when invading Vekta.

The ISA aren't wearing masks in KZ2 because they aren't expecting to be there (on Helghan) very long.

Siren: Blood Curse

tiddles

Really enjoying this... it lacks a lot of the complexity and challenge of the original, but that may be no bad thing! And the episodic structure works really well, too - if I was playing it as a normal disc-based game, I'd probably play about an hour and then never pick it up again, but there's definitely something more-ish about downloading the chapters and playing through the bite-sized chunks... Worth checking out, after all, there's not exactly many other survival horror games being released onto the market these days :|

Race Driver: GRID

Anyone having difficulties with the handling - turn OFF Stability Control and see what you think then... makes a huge difference imho. (This option would probably be better named "Ridge Racer handling on/off".... ;) )

Played both demo's yesterday and just find the game way too punishing, the number of times i had to restart a race 30 seconds in cos my steering was already screwed from damage was just silly!! From other people opinions it would seem that some of you like that. But it's back to PGR4 and GT5P for me. And trying to compare GRID to either is a waist of time as they very dfferent games

Tried using the flashback function? Select Instant Replay and press X / Square.

After initially not liking the handling, I now love the demo, and will be buying the game. I think a lot of the problems are caused by the third person camera - the pivot point is quite far back, exaggerating the appearance of turning and making the car feel over-responsive. A lot of the time when people talk about "cocktail-stick" handling they're actually describing the behaviour of the camera... when you go into any of the 1st person modes you can see that the handling model is actually fine (in my opinion - others will no doubt disagree).

However, I would also say that you need to play around with the driver assists too. I ended up settling for Traction Control as my only assist, as the spinning out you get without it when you give it too much gas was a step too far in the direction of realism for me! I would definitely recommend disabling Stability Control though, as it appears to give the car a much weightier feel, even though you have to take more care with cornering. Braking Assistance can be used if you don't want to worry about locking up the brakes, but personally I like having to deal with this, and it was a feature that was always well implemented on previous TOCAs.

Once the handling clicks, and you find the right combination of assists, it provides a fantastic exciting racing experience - they've brought back that unique TOCA feel of jostling with a huge field of other cars and fighting for your place. And the rewind feature is great too - perhaps this should become a feature for ALL single-player games, not just racing and Prince Of Persia? :)

Kojima talks about the future of MGS

tiddles

I read it as being potentially a metaphorical "killing off" - this will be the last game to feature Snake, whether or not he actually dies at the end... but yeah, given the plotting of the MGS series, dying is only ever a slight inconvenience...

Byron Review due on March 27th

tiddles

The government needs to SPEND MONEY on an advertising and awareness campaign to spread the word that, yes, games are for adults too, and just like movies and other artforms there are some games you probably don't want kids to be playing - hence the numbers on the box. People just don't generally see games in the same category as other forms of entertainment which have adults-only titles.

TGS: Sony lists PS3 rumblers

tiddles

Really hope Sega Rally gets an update... rumble is a key feedback mechanism in this game (judging from the demo), as it lets you know whether or not you're in the ruts caused by other cars, so I can imagine the PS3 version won't quite be complete without it...

Looks and sounds very promising - apart from the bit about the one-shot-kill snipers. They are never fun in any game I've ever played.

Isn't the point that you see their laser beams first, so you get a chance to get out of their way before they shoot you?

BioShock

tiddles

ell, I'd like to do a road to Bioshock sort of thing, tracing it back to Ultima Underworlds - I've always wanted to do a history of the Looking Glass Diaspora.

Like a sort of games version of "Rock Family Trees"? It's funny how this subgenre has persisted and developed over the years, generally to critical acclaim and massive financial failure... looks like Bioshock will buck this trend, thankfully.

Games that should probably be on the list:

Ultima Underworld 1&2
System Shock 1&2
Deus Ex
Deus Ex: Invisible War
Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines (don't know if there's an Origin connection, but there's a lot of design similarities...)
