Really great article (thank you) with a major omission: Warcraft 3. Brilliant for making casual games and arguably developed some great game archetypes today.

Dreamcast: A Forensic Retrospective
Dreamcast was pretty cool. It kind of nailed what a gaming console should be in my eyes and that is an array of accessible games. Nintendo take that accolade nowadays.

Games of 2010: Robot Unicorn Attack
Oh dear. I should really try this to establish for sure whether this thread is a wardrobe, or genuinely a top 10 iPhone game of the year. I mean toucharcade put aralon up there, and infinity. But always worth seeing if they're humilitatingly wrong at not including it all in it's top games of 2010.

World of Warcraft hits 12m subscribers
it is 12m because they have a high number of people who bought the game, and there are many casuals of that who login at say catalysm and notch up the number of current subscribers. They can sustain this level for a while I reckon unless they get some good competition. (read Guild Wars 2)

Chronicles of Spellborn shutting down
Doesn't look good for small budget mmos when an original one comes along and flounders like this. But, from what it sounds like it was buggered from its launch. The company ran out of money then and its just been a half-arsed effort by whoever took over to get people playing.

Sid Meier's Civilization V
Actually my last opinion on this topic as I didn't want to derail it- but just thought it was a silly retort saying gaming is the wrong hobby if you're fed up of seeing another sequel to a game. A valid point perhaps that civ hasn't seen a sequel in 5 years(unless you count civ rev) but not to suggest because you're tired of seeing a sequel to a particular game that gaming is the wrong hobby because that is ridiculous.Which I expect everyone knows anyway hence the knee-jerk reaction of "trolling" so I'll stop here. :)

Don't get up in arms-I've just got civ on my iPhone. My opinion though is since civ2 every civ has just been the same -hardly altering anything. I'd love to see Sid Meier work on a new franchise.

"If you get bored with a sequel every 5 years, gaming is probably the wrong hobby. " thats an awful retort :D But whatever you're clearly passionate about it, may I recommend the 'new' worms to you as well ;p |

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm
I'm not WoW's biggest fan, but I'm excited about this expansion. Perhaps the first time in any mmorpg that the whole landscape of existing zones has been altered. Its not as good as the idea of dynamic changes, but its almost as good. Good to see them overhauling some of their rubbish systems they implemented as well.

League of Legends
a patch on this has completely changed the gameplay on this; less hp towers means lane-pushing is much more effective. So, no long game ultra-itemmed heroes. Problem is now with this patch all but about 8 heroes are locked (as was going to happen) unless you got influence points and they're a pain to earn. (~100 a game and 1350-3150 gold a hero, 30-odd heroes to unlock)

An average critic score of 8.3, an average user-score of 8.2 on gamespot. I think that speaks for itself. Though it has to be said former Dota Allstars players will see the game as marmite either loving or hating it (hence the above 4/10 quip); the lack of denial probably being a pivotal feature in that harsh verdict- which if I'm honest as a game design decision I strongly support Riotgames- I'd prefer to see more new players(or casual players) picking up and playing. (Not to mention how little sense in the first place killing your own troops is.)

Does this have any single-player (skirmish) mode at all? And when the review says "free", what's the version sold on Steam? You can play single player with bots and that. And there is a version that LoL sell. Basically the model aims to be that its Free to play and you earn points the more you play to unlock more and more champions or skins. The pay to play you just buy and you start with the choice of all the champions etc. Basically its cool either way, I'd pay but starting with a restricted number of champions (which currently isn't on the Europe version)- you get to learn those champions before getting access to new ones. |

it's an excellent game. And I'd definitely have bought this game, very cool they've made this free so there's a bigger pool of players to play against.
