There will be "at least" five new Xbox Game Pass games every month

smurphs

I love the service already as it gave me the chance to try toy soldier, farming simulator and scream ride - games I never would have bothered with but are surprisingly good. The service needs more 'also rans' like these rather than AAAs. For the first time my xbox is getting more of my time than my ps4 (and even breath of the wild has been put on hold!)

Farming Simulator 17 ploughs through the competition

@dadrester - yes we've had a go on that, they loved having to indicate. The other game they liked was Driver San Francisco, it was so funny watching them slow down at the traffic lights. :-)

There's a distinct lack of sims on consoles at the moment and this shows there's definitely a market for them. My kids would love a proper driving sim where you have to obey the rules of the road etc. I'd love a flight sim please. (Off you trot, devs)

Assetto Corsa console review

I bought project Cars just for hot lapping, as I hate racing a.i. This sounds perfect for me, particularly the wider range of cars, I much prefer driving classics with their idiosyncratic (i.e. fun) handling :-)

Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness review

smurphs

I'm not the biggest jrpg fan, breath of fire 3 was the only one I got seriously into in previous years (despite giving most of them a good go). This year however xenoblade x has grabbed me by the balls and won't let go.

In fact xenoblade and dark souls are the only games I've really committed to in recent years, so I'd say the Japanese are still my fave developers of games.

F1 2015 review

smurphs

This sounds perfect to me - smoother gameplay with a pad, no cheesy career mode, just what I'm looking for in a racing game.
This review more than any other has vindicated Eurogamer's no score policy - if I'd have seen a 6 I probably would have been disappointed.

The Wii U games confirmed for release in 2015

smurphs

I don't mind the wait, gives me time to get stuck into my current 'pile of shame': pikmin 3, monster hunter 3, Mario u, donkey Kong, batman arkham city, scram kitty, metroid primes 1,2&3, zelda windwaker, toki tori 1&2, Mario kart 8, smash brothers, and assassin's creed 4. In fact I'll probably be ok if they don't release anything else until 2020. I love my wii u, possibly even more than the dreamcast. Best console ever. :-)

Video: Elite doesn't care about you - and that's why it's great

smurphs

Great vid - had to laugh at the eurotruck reference as I've been playing these games side by side and it's too true how similar they are.

I'm loving the game, it is slow but that feels just right to me, I like the sense that I need to put in the hours to get anywhere.

Conversely though I've only put about 15 hours in so far and I've sweated as I nervously boosted my slaves into port, held my breath as my ship ran out of oxygen in an empty system miles from anywhere, and giggled as the music kicked in with the docking computer.

Bloody genius game imo.

@Agent_Llama - agreed! We've been using Scratch in school, which is fun, but I'm trying to get my school to get into using Quest, an adventure game creator. It even lets you do 'choose your own adventure' stories, I'm sure Ian would approve!

Games of 2013: Gran Turismo 6

smurphs

@barchetta I play with the vibration-less ds3 sometimes and it doesn't seem to hurt my lap times (not that they're anything to shout about mind!). It seems to me that a lot of the handling improvements are down to sound feedback from the tyres and just a bit more forgiveness when you start to lose traction.

on the whole I fully agree with this love letter to GT6, easily my favourite racing game since GT Legends on PC, and I'm only just into the iB stuff so far. the progression curve and 'sidequest' style races are beautifully doled out, making this feel like the best RPG I've played in a long long time.

Sony Xperia Z review

Impressive as this is, my xperia u isn't going anywhere - I love it's diminutive size that allows me to fit it in any pocket, take it running etc. Why don't they make smaller versions of their new phones?

Pocket Stables review

smurphs

@adilahmeduk I know iOS is the stronger platform for games, I just couldn't afford an iPad. Now I'm an android convert, I just love using my ps3 controller to play games on my tablet. The last time I felt this sentimental about a piece of hardware (my nexus 7) was for my Amiga 500!

smurphs

It surprises me how little coverage android is getting, I've shifted most of my gaming time to my nexus 7 and am having more fun than I've had in years for far less outlay.
At the moment 10000000 has its beautifully crafted hooks in me, Pixel Dungeon is my dark souls compulsion and the Bard's Tale using my ps3 controller is the best after work chill-out fix I've had in years.
Viva l'Android!

Just Cause 2 and Borderlands free for PlayStation Plus members

smurphs

Does PS+ give access to faster downloads? I tried to update GT5 the other day (admittedly after a long time away), and it took 3 hours and then crashed. I have a solid 11Mbps connection too. If it sorts this problem out I'll subscribe in a heartbeat (or however many beats of my ageing heart it takes to enter my details, anyway).

Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends Review

smurphs

This sounds very similar to the experience I had with GT Legends. I found the higher realism settings made the game so much more fun to play, with much improved handling, but that made the races too hard to compete in (for my humble skills, anyway!)

Surely it would be possible to allow the user to set the physics model to full but lower the AI difficulty settings?

Valve counters EA's Steam sales "cheapen intellectual property" accusation

smurphs

Valve are right in my book. I picked up Mount & Blade for a song in their last sales, and if the developer brings out a new one I'd pay 40 for it as soon as it became available.

I love the sales, they give me the opportunity to take a punt on games I would never have bothered with.

GT5 2.0: Why You Need To Go Back

smurphs

I prefer the driving model in GT over Forza. It just feels right. Bumping other cars, however, just feels wrong, which is a great incentive to avoid doing so! Yes, GT's menus are crap, but it's career mode is much more satisfying imo.

I just wish Forza or GT would adopt the superb cameras in NFS Shift, which give a fantastic sense of speed.

Rage

All the reviews I've read so far sound like the reviewers got bored ploughing their way through the campaign mode (as they must to get the reviews done in time). I wonder how differently games would review from the perspective of a slightly more typical gamer who only plays bits of multiple games. For example, I'm steadily playing FFXIII and loving it, but only because I'm playing in short doses, I would have snapped the disk in two if I'd been made to play the last 8 hours in one or two sittings.

Re. the toybox analogy - that suits me right down to the ground. Having kids and stuff means I can only dip into games at odd times and this sounds like ideal post-bedtime-trauma fodder. There's too much talky talky in games these days I reckon.
