Fired OMGPOP dev: "People were ripping up Zynga hoodies and T-shirts"

slippysloppy

OMGPOP's investors were about to lose a lot of money ($14m) until DrawSome hit and Zynga purchased them. A deal that made everyone, including the workforce who benefitted from the deal, rather wealthy. Everyone's had their pay off but I assume they were trapped working for Zynga. No wonder everyone's celebrating, who could blame them?

What so now the Sony fan boys on here are allowing us to accept the PS3 has its flaws because the PS4 addresses them? What next, will Sony devs announce that PSN has issues that'll be addressed with the PS4, and we'll be able to come out the closet and admit that it's slow and bogged down with updates?

Parents refused refund by Apple after son spends 1700 on free iPad game

slippysloppy

@dennisaronholland Apple probably will issue a full refund, but that doesn't stop the Daily Mail jumping on it and spreading their poison first. My only surprise is they didn't slip something into the article about how the game made little Danny violent or blame it on immigration.

"Danny has been in tears when we told him how much money he had spent" If spending 69.99 a pop was meaningless to him I'm sure the 1700 wouldn't have much impact. Maybe it's shouting at your child because of your own stupidity that made him cry. Maybe he was just crying because you're his parents.

Temple Run 2 review

slippysloppy

I downloaded this the other day and found the "sticking its hand out a little more prominently, reminding you after every death that "GAME OVER" is only a problem for tightwads" more annoying than anything else (the game not the statement). I totally get what Owen's saying, and these are the facts of the game, but when success in a game equates to how much you've spent on it, then the gamer and the potentially the game are severely lacking.

IMO the original Temple Run got it exactly right. Those that were good at it didn't spend any money in-app but spread the word to others about how good the game actually was. Where as others (mostly non-gamers) spent a fortune on it - the balance was perfect. TR2 also lacks the simplicity of the first game and I agree the lack of mile markers is a disappointment - holding your nerve as you came up to your friend's high-score then not only beating it but to keep on going was perfectly pitched and a brilliant moment in mobile/app gaming.

@FireMonkey The break down is simplistic but how many people do you really need? Audio doesn't have to be grand orchestras, you can buy a lot of great quality sound from Royalty Free libraries and it's low cost. Alternatively there are recording studios out there who can do a hell of a lot for 700 (call that two days work for them and add that to my breakdown).

And quality control? The PM should be on top of that all times, and if your designer and programmer don't care about it then you've hired the wrong people.

I'm with @DanWhitehead on this. Neg me if you want, I really don't care but it certainly doesn't make you right. Lets say we lower the amount to 200k and lose the PC version, you could still build a shit hot iOS game, including all design, programming and marketing and have just about enough left in the pot to retire.

Let's say there's a 6 month dev cycle.

Programmer's wage for 6 months - 15k
Designer/illustrator wage for 6 months - 15k
Project management (concepts and keeping things on track etc.) for 6 months - 20k
Marketing spend - 50k

Total: 100k (or 50k if you just put it out there and cross your fingers (and everything else you've got)).

If they'd have been more realistic they could have done it.

PlayStation 3 the number one platform for Netflix

slippysloppy

@johnnyquicknives What did really fail for me on the 360 was the Love Film interface. Its biggest crime was a limit on how many films could be displayed in each section. Even laboriously trawling through the A-Z index, it was impossible to see everything that was available.

Again this may have been fixed since I cancelled my sub, as I know they've introduced HD streaming since then.

slippysloppy

@johnnyquicknives Each to his own but I really liked the 360 interface, unless they've changed it since launch. I didn't like the PS3 was anywhere near much but it did seem more stable than the 360.

Mario, Layton offered free to 3DS XL owners

slippysloppy

@Serebii Er chocolate? What are you on about?

It was decent of them to do so but what Nintendo were doing was compensating those who paid full price at launch. I personally would have preferred one 3DS game I would have played rather than a selection of GBA games I will never play. I see nothing wrong with having that opinion, it is valid just because it doesn't align with yours.

I also think what Nintendo are doing here is very decent, considering they're here to make money they do show strong signs of considering the consumer.

Nintendo Wii U review

slippysloppy

I'm stating this now, I will NEVER buy the Wii U because of it's lack of power. Not because I believe that power == great games but because I already own 2 consoles (3 if you count the Vita) that rival the Wii U in terms of tech and horse power.

Having said that, if I received a Wii U as a gift from a loved one I'm sure it would bring me a lot of pleasure.

Ubisoft boss criticises Wii U price: "I can't say I'm happy"

slippysloppy

I'm really interested to see how the Wii U performs. I think a lot of parents will buy it for their kids this Christmas, it's an easy and safe bet, and fans of Nintendo will almost certainly get it but I think it may struggle to penetrate the mainstream as Nintendo did so successfully with the original Wii.

I'm a bit of a gadget geek but this doesn't appeal, the tech doesn't offer me anything I don't already own and whenever I consider buying one, the neon blue light on my Wii winks at me, reminding me I really should unplug it and that I don't need more of the same.

Wii U GamePad mic won't support voice-chat

slippysloppy

I genuinely think Nintendo are in trouble here, not because the console is bad just that it doesn't offer enough to sell to the mass market in these current financial times. I also don't think there's enough to attract gamers who aren't Nintendo die hards. I personally love gadgets and new tech, and even the Wii was great as the remote was a new experience and we'd never seen anything like that before. The Wii U appears to offer little that we haven't seen before and Nintendo still seem to be playing catch up and making false starts.

I'll likely continue to buy Nintendo handhelds but as for consoles, I think it's Sony and Microsoft for the foreseeable, or at least until consoles are no longer used.

Unless storage is a massive issue, I personally can't see why anyone would pay more to download a game, when not only can it be pre-ordered online for less but more often than not it'll turn up a day or two before the release date. Aside from storage there seems to be no advantage.

@Kysen Let's say you do get fired, you certainly don't have to start all over again because what you have now is called a portfolio of work.

slippysloppy

This is certainly good advice and one that can be adapted to almost any job, if you haven't got the experience then get it yourself, make it happen. It'll not only give you the experience you need but it'll say a lot about you as a person, and it's that kind of person that people want to employ.

A great example of someone doing this is Tobias Richter, who used to create 3D Star Wars animations on the Amiga for public domain release. This led to him working on Star Wars: Rogue Squadron and its sequel and is currently the visual effects supervisor on the new 'Star Trek: New Voyages' TV series. I very much doubt he'd have got this far if he hadn't got up off his ass and used his passion to drive himself forward.

Without these (assuming big jiggly tit gaming is something you're into - and don't get me wrong I like big jiggly tits, it's just not enough to make me invest in a game) then isn't it missing the only thing that made it stand out in a crowded market place, leaving behind only an average brawler?
