Kinect officially dead

shadow651

Itís funny, in gaming the Kinect was pretty rubbish but it is still loved in academics where it was a inexpensive 3d camera which was great for vision. One of our large robots has one mounted to its head, not that there isnít alternatives now but when it first came out it was great for the price.

Nintendo plays down claim it will end Wii U production this year

shadow651

2 years ago

@7M7
A Nintendo fan talking about narrow mentality??? Pot meet Kettle.

For me Nintendo games have been good but not great, certainly not to the level of acclaim they recieve. Plenty of indie games have been far more innovative than what they have produced.

In the end Nintendo has always played the scarcity game. They purposely under supplied the wii to create hype at selling out. They do the same for their games. You stick a guy in the desert with no water and it won't be long before he creates a religion over the little he finds. Do the same with games and the few that are good start to resemble a genius creation on par with the Sistine chapel.

In Theory: Does PS4 offer VR its best chance at success?

shadow651

2 years ago

Do the people who harp on about looking foolish think they look like a model while playing games?
Even the 3D comparison is rather bogus, it had no where near the enthusiasm of vr nor appeal to film makers who tacked it on afterwards when the studio told them to (compare that to the companies making vr stuff that are having fun making it without the need to be coerced).
The entire idea of 3D added nothing. It had no way to deliver content in an actually new way.

In the end it's a bit like complaining about cinemas when they first appeared because who would want to sit in a dark room looking like a penniless theatre goer (trudging in from the cold rain) when you could read a newspaper or a good book while listening to the radio by the fire?
Well now we know.

Steam in hot water after admitting security lapse exposed 34,000 users' details

Steam basically ran an inference attack on behalf on hackers, free information is a gold mine to hackers. It can used to run identity thieft, spearhead phishing, custom password attacks etc.

In the end we gave steam our data on the assumption of it's safety. We are punished when we break our end of the bargain of the contract we signed with them, now they broke their end, what is their punishment I wonder?

I think what he said sums up the game
"Stuntman in a hollywood action movie"
No sense of uniqueness, just nice graphics. Just feels like there is nothing special about it at all. The premise sounds interesting but then you watch it and its just...blah. Definite generic hollywood action film.

Papers Please, easily demonstrated real weighty issues without resorting to the ridiculousness of this.

Honestly can you not tell the difference between a successful implementation like papers please and this?
If so than the depressing comment is your own.

@sloth09 I've read Maus and no its not even comparable.

Maus is actually a good example of what I was talking about. A subject that is deeply emotionally yet one that was successfully explored, not through pure facts but artistry.

Maus successfully shows the horror and demonstrates it without the need of any other context, a child can understand it.

This is not Maus,
People seem to forget this is supposed to be a children's game, not an adult who already understands.
Do you honestly expect a seven year old to understand the context of slave tetris without any prior knowledge?
A seven year old isn't going to get the subtleties of a complex topic, all they will see is a colourful game of pushing black people into a ship.

Again I reiterate, that is not education for a CHILD, you teach them nothing.

@Whitster
Which is what?
Is your rushed defence of the developer any different?
There is those who seek offence, I agree on that, but that isn't an excuse to decry all opponents who have valid complaints.

For the record, I'm not asking for this to be banned or anything of the sort. But just as the developer has the freedom of speech to create this, I have my right to criticise it.

shadow651

Honestly no, I can't give a pass to this game for being educational'.
It takes a highly serious and emotional part of history and condenses it to shoving caricature black slaves into a boat.
That does not amount to education.

It is not for us to understand the developers 'point' as others are saying but for them to clearly define and articulate that point without distorting the subject.

And this isn't to say slavery can't be depicted in games, it can be done, but its not a subject to haphazardly create a trivial mini-game out of, especially if they intend that to be a child's (bear in mind children, not adults with context or reasoning of it) experience of slavery. Particularly in the context of the modern world and the going-ons of the US which we know about even here in Europe. Nor are the danish immune to this given their own history in the slave trade.

UK tax watchers are furious with the "fairly undramatic" Ship Emergency Simulator

shadow651

3 years ago

I think it depends purely on what type of game is it.

a) Its an actual simulator and will be used to train people provided its fully or as close as possible to accurate. In which case its fine.

b) Its a game first and foremost, but of very high quality, similar or exceeding the likes of well known and reviewed games such as Euro Truck Simulator. In which case its fine (provided the money shall be paid back upon a certain amount pre-discussed to be sold).

-(Personally I'm still against providing money to companies regardless of size unless for price stabilisation, its crony capitalism that highly distorts the market and can lead to corruption but I'm not going to fight that battle over this)

c) Its just another one of the thousand scam "...Simulator" games, that are nothing but cheap, easily made games that clog up steam. In which case NO WAY IN HELL.

Easy.

Apple is removing games with the Confederate flag from the App Store

shadow651

3 years ago

In the end, Apple cares more for the PR goodwill exposure they get from a blanket ban (sounds more forceful than partial ban with exemptions) than they do for context. A handful of apps won't change their mind.

Makes you wonder whether the company even cares or whether they are just looking for a quick and easy media story. They might switch to partial ban when the dust has settled but chances are they won't in case of "apples reveres course on confederate flag ban" headlines.

@FladgeMangle
I base on the most accepted definition of a game (and a video game being a digital version) which is something that is competitive.
Thats not to say multiplayer competitive but requires some form of competition in its many forms.

For me this game is closer to a museum experience. Its a relatively explorative nature, finding items from history and learning their tales just as this game is walking and finding pieces of information.

A closer analogy would be something I remember from a good few years ago. Encarta (the microsoft learning suite that doesn't exist anymore) had this interactive walkthrough of locations from history. Super interesting that I believe contained little tooltips that you could find that described aspects. This wasn't and still isn't (including by its developer microsoft) considered a game.

Again I don't mind these things, they are great at what they do but I don't like labelling them games. It makes the word just too generic to the point that any action could be considered a game. At what point does the boundary (by this time considered arbitrary) end?

shadow651

@Nikanoru
I have to say that I'm with you.
Some people have taken the most black and white view on here, that the only games is this 'artistic' walking and 'murica' shooting games.

These are Interactive Stories not games, there is no gameplay no two ways about it.

Doesn't mean they aren't acceptable for what they are (certainly not my thing given I quite despised Dear Esther) but its not a game.

Crytek's Ryse 2 canned as financial struggle spreads to Shanghai

shadow651

4 years ago

They just have to accept reality, Crytek has been acting like it was flush with cash just buying up studios and IPs left, right and centre.

It's tough but unless they get some investors to keep them afloat(hard to do if the report is true that they simple aren't making very much money) then they are just going to have to sell all those studios they bought, shrink to a manageable size, then work up again, preferably slowly this time.

shadow651

@Mhoey Its not actually that useful for them.

I highly doubt that Microsoft funding extended beyond what would have been necessary for Ryse 2.
They'd still have lots of other debts and that would still be outstanding while development of a AAA game went on.

They would never even see the end of Ryse development before having to close.

When will we see a gay protagonist in a triple-A game?

shadow651

4 years ago

@PlugMonkey
People saying there is no need for a character to have a sexuality unless the story demands it are essentially saying that there's no need for that character to actually be a character at all. Just a personality vacuum with a gun. That's kind of sad.
I'm sorry but why is it sad?
People love Gordon Freeman not because he is some deep character but because he is everyone who plays him. Not every game has to be narrative heavy to be good or fun
4 0

shadow651

4 years ago

How are we supposed to know if the character is gay or not unless they're written horribly as stereotypically flamboyant.
The vast majority of games simply do not address the characters sexuality because it's not something people do, gay people don't say they're gay every two seconds in real life.

Women and non white characters are a far bigger issue in gaming than this.
