The problem with video game guns

sega

I do often wonder why the majority of games feature guns and violence. It's like inflicting pain/damage on to an opponent is the only thing we can think of to create enjoyable game rules. Shooters have been around from the start with games like Space Invaders, but it was surrounded by many other different types of games like Pacman and Donkey Kong. Games where rules revolved around avoiding, navigating and competing against time. It's interesting that such ideas didn't take off in the same way.

As far as the guns themselves go, there's still nothing wrong with enjoying them in a game. My favourite was always the seemingly boring but rather satisfying shotgun from Doom. Competitive shooting can be a lot of fun (even in real life with things like paintball) and I'd hate for the genre to ever go away. I'd love shooters and violent games to be surrounded by just as many different interesting gameplay ideas as in the earlier days.

Wii U GameCube controller adapter compatible with more than just Smash Bros.

I can't see GameCube games coming to the Virtual Console. They don't even have the N64 yet, not to mention previously supported consoles like the Megadrive and Neo Geo. We also wouldn't be seeing titles like Resident Evil and Wind Waker due to re-releases elsewhere.

The Wii U should have just supported GameCube from the start. The main reason I didn't get one is because I still played GameCube games a lot on the Wii. Still do. Can't see the day when I won't fancy a game of F-Zero GX.

Sometimes I wish more games were just a vertical slice

sega

I think shorter experiences should be explored more in the industry. Some of the games that I'm currently playing have been on the go for over three years now. I think of how much more I'd enjoy them if they could be finished in a weekend or a day.

Sometimes you hear about a good idea for a game followed by how it'd be difficult to work into a full game. It doesn't have to. Just make it into its own short experience. I'd love to be able to sit down for a couple of hours and fully play through something rather than just a small section of a much larger quest.

Why we need more developers like Zoe Quinn

sega

The point is that video games are mostly terrible and we need more creativity and variety in the industry. It's all very well if you enjoy a lot of the big budget games, but wouldn't it be nice if we had a few more choices? The games you currently enjoy don't need to go away.

Of course some big budget games can be great, but if new ideas aren't explored they can become boring. What has worked before generally gets repeated. It's like games just gradually change and adapt slightly to keep the hardcore gamer happy whilst ignoring the rest of us.

I'm drawn to original ideas, but only the indie scene really caters to me. Imagine what could be achieved with a bigger budget and a larger team behind the vision. It happens occasionally, but most of the time we have to abide by the gamer's checklist.

Why Silent Hill 2 is still the most disturbing game ever made

sega

@GooseUK I like fixed camera angles too - have no problem with games using them. It was the combination of the controls they decided to use along with the fixed camera angles. It resulted in a lot of confusion over which way you were heading.

@bertrandolf You should try Shattered Memories. I'd argue it's the best in the series, but seems to have a negative view because it removed weapons/combat to focus on exploration and puzzle solving, which are the aspects of Silent Hill I enjoy the most.
1 1

sega

I only played through Silent Hill 2 for the first time kind of recently (original version) and didn't really enjoy it. Most of the game involved checking countless doors, one after the other, to see if they would open. Most of the corridors looked so similar, that most play sessions just involved trying to find a room that you were in before. Awkward controls where the camera would change and you'd accidentally walk back the way you came down an identical looking corridor. The enemies also seemed pointless, since I just ran past most, and others were too easy to kill that they were unnecessary. Finally the game had some of the worst voice acting I have ever heard.

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I fail to see what makes this game an enjoyable experience. The age of the game is no excuse, since it was from around the time of the Resident Evil remake, which holds up very well. Maybe the game just wasn't for me or I was missing something, but it's not a title I'd care to revisit.

FMV cult classic Night Trap launches Kickstarter for HD remaster

sega

Good or bad, I think every game deserves to be remembered and available to play by those who want to. How are they remastering it, though? Cleaning up the original negative or just sticking an HD interface over what they have?

Interestingly, Night Trap was filmed in 1986, six years prior to its Sega CD release, as it was initially developed for a never released Hasbro console codenamed Nemo.
I always thought the fashion looked super dated, even for the 90s.

Video Games: The Movie review

sega

@Guy.J.
Pushing your logic past sense in a similar fashion we arrive at an equally preposterous assertion: that video games do not benefit from advances in technology (never mind advances in game design) and we might as well have stuck with BBC Micros or something.
Well it's obvious newer technology can help create new and different experiences, in all media, but it still doesn't make what came in the past irrelevant. If you want to use music as an example, it's like saying music played with a violin is redundant since the invention of the electronic synthesiser. We now use a lot of CG technology in films, but it doesn't mean that Transformers 4 is automatically better than 2001 A Space Odyssey (although if you'd rather watch one over the other, that's your choice).

With games, titles like Pacman, Tetris and Donkey Kong are just as much fun today, regardless of technology. It doesn't mean we should all stick with BBC Micros because GTA 5 and The Last Of Us are great games too. What it does mean is that Pacman still has a place next to those titles for also being a good game that's worth playing.

Granted this is a US made film, but it seems to be another example that ignores how video games evolved in the rest of the world. It's always the Atari crash/E.T followed by the NES saving the day, paving the way for the modern action game. I'd be surprised if this even mentioned the Spectrum, C64, Master System, Amiga and Atari St.

Even the modern action game is kind of irrelevant to me, since I prefer to play "quirky" indie titles. If these documentaries are anything to go by, it's like my entire video game playing history came from an alternate dimension.

There's concern, too, about the erosion of ownership, about not being able to call something your own and risking it being taking away from you whenever the servers are inevitably switched off. It's a sentiment felt in full-force when Microsoft laid out its early plans for the Xbox One, and regardless of what's happened since the feeling remains. Still, it's part of the new future of media we're all becoming resigned to, and it's not wholly exclusive to games. It's where you own nothing, but where companies go out of their way to own a little piece of you - a Facebook like, a Twitter follow or, in this case, being part of your monthly roll-call of direct debit orders.
I was in a game store yesterday (first time in a while) and noticed an unusually large PC section. Indie games like Gone Home, Limbo and Lifeless Planet all boxed up ( with a few extras) and "DRM free" plastered on the box. These are games most people would have just been happy to own on Steam, but there they are sitting on a shelf in the high street.

I think people are catching on and the demand to own the titles you love is becoming important again. Before the VCR, all television content was streamed and it became quite appealing to be able to own films and TV shows to watch when you want. As gaming services get switched off, titles get removed and things disappear, people will want to try and hold on to the games they love. It's why retro gaming has become such big business.

Services aren't an inevitable future - it's human nature to want to own things and, unless everything everywhere is available via a service forever, people will find a way to do so. Services should go alongside what we purchase to keep and this EA service is fine in that regard - I might want to play Battlefield, but don't care enough to own it. It's the same with Netflix - I'm happy to just stream that low budget action movie, but Raiders of the Lost Ark is permanently on the shelf under my TV.

Batman: Arkham Knight's Red Hood Story DLC is a GameStop exclusive

sega

I got a bit of a negative reaction when I said I was no longer going to be buying Alien Isolation on launch because of the pre-order nonsense. I still want the game, but as a full package without jumping through hoops to get it. The same applies here. Every time a game is announced that I want with a preorder bonus or content saved for DLC, I'm just going to wait for it to be in a full package. I can wait a very long time, I have plenty to be playing. We just need a bit of patience.

Can you imagine if they did this with movies? Go and see The Dark Knight at one cinema chain to get extra scenes showing the fate of The Scarecrow. Go and see it at another cinema and get an extended ending featuring Two Face. If you don't see it on opening night, you're still getting a full film with all the Joker content.

Doom 4 is an oldschool reboot, just called Doom

sega

Doom is still as much fun today as it ever was. Even the graphics hold up well, as sprites tend to do.

There's nothing "old man" about liking Doom. The gameplay is solid and it's a real challenge. It had a puzzle aspect to it where the goal was to work out how to reach the exit.

The problem with modern FPS titles is they play more like a theme park ride. Clear an area, get a cutscene, move forward and repeat. Regenerating health and checkpoints take away the challenge you get from having 15% health, 10 shotgun shells and 10 demons heading your way.

It's all very well if you enjoy modern FPS titles, but Doom is something else. It's not about the story, it's not about realism, it's all about fun.

"It's not historically accurate!"

sega

Some of you have a point when you mention designers should be able to put what they want in their games, but they're still stuck in a male dominated limbo of boredom.

I'm happy for the games to exist with tough male protagonists that involve "historically accurate" fighting, but what are the alternatives? I find myself endlessly looking through the masses of heavily promoted tough guy protagonist action games before I come across the odd title (usually an indie game) that dares to do things differently.

I'm not looking to play as a woman in every game and I don't want current genres to disappear. I just want more choice. At the moment it's the equivalent of 90% of the movies available to watch being directed by Michael Bay. There's exceptions that have me interested like Alien Isolation and, well, that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Really there needs to be more women involved in the games industry, but that'll only happen if games don't exclude so many by only providing male fantasies. It's up to the men to help in this change, but the argument that designers can design what they want doesn't hold much weight in an industry with little creativity.

Streets of Rage was much more than a Final Fight clone

sega

@Ryze I'm not sure what point you're trying to make then if you're not talking about a four player version. That they should have released a Streets of Rage on the Mega CD? Sure, why not, but it wouldn't have saved the system. Streets Of Rage 3 was a technically superior game to the second, but didn't sell as well because things had moved on. A Street Fighter 2 on the Mega CD perhaps could have helped, but even Sonic couldn't shift units.

The problem with the Mega CD is that it was an expensive add-on and, lets face it, when you remove the FMV games all you have left are titles that look similar to what you can get on your standard Megadrive. A Streets of Rage that required the Megadrive, Mega CD and 32X to play would have just been a waste of development time and I doubt much of an improvement over Streets of Rage 2 anyway. It wouldn't warrant such huge extra cost to both developer and consumer, especially if you also need to get a disc and cartridge version too to make it work.

For the record I love the Mega CD. It's a great system, especially these days for people into interesting retro games. I just don't think it could have been saved from obscurity.
0 2

sega

@Ryze but all that for a four player game? Yeah the Master System has a playable version but it has smaller sprites and less detailed graphics. You can't just throw a ton of extra character and enemy sprites on screen. I mean you could make the sprites smaller, slow down the speed and make other compromises to get a four player version working, but would you like that version of the game more?

Yeah the Mega CD needed more support, but you can't push it beyond its means. When it was released, Final Fight CD was, technically, the best you got in that genre until the next generation came about. It could handle four large enemy sprites and two player sprites (with occasional visual flicker). Streets of Rage 2 could handle five enemy sprites and two player sprites, but at a smaller size. They're roughly the same in that respect.

Whatever sacrifices you'd have to make on top of that to get a four player version, along with using an additional CD add and a multi-tap on top of that for the few people who would use the four player mode back then just doesn't seem worth it.
1 2

sega

@Ryze But the Mega CD only had limited RAM, so I'm not sure how far they could have gone with that. As I said, Final Fight CD could only manage six sprites on screen, with flickering from time to time.

I like the idea we could have had games like that in the home back then, but I just don't think hardware could manage it until the Saturn came about. Of course, a 4 player Saturn Streets Of Rage definitely should have happened.
0 0

sega

@Ryze The Japanese version retains the "grand uppar" samples and similar difficulty levels to the second game. The second game is still superior, mind.

I doubt you could have got a four player version working on a Megadrive/Mega CD, at least with the same quality. The amount of enemies is limited to about four on screen at a time (same for Final Fight CD), which would just leave for two enemies if there were four player characters at a time. You'd need about 6 enemies for any type of four player challenge - so 10 large sprites on screen at once.

OK, so if cracking a DRM-version is easy for the pirates, surely pirating a DRM-free version must be about 10-times easier, right? My point being, the guy is happy to give that statistic, but he's not mentioning how much the game was pirated from their DRM-free version.
It'd be the same. Just one person needs to upload a cracked version and it will be all over the internet in a day. Sure, someone might have to stay up all night hacking away, but it's not like you need 100 cracked versions by 100 different hackers to provide 100 downloads.

There's also no point to download a DRM free game illegally other than simply not wanting to pay, however that comes with the risk of viruses or possibly a dud version. You get the better deal for paying in this case. Some people are cheapskates, but that will never change no matter what you do.

@Alnilam I'm not going to neg you, but I disagree. Non intrusive DRM still becomes a problem when servers are shut down, when servers fail or if the company goes out of business.

Census says UK games industry back on track

It's good that reduced taxes can keep the cost down, but things like this still worry me:

"For example," he added, "Eden Films has plans to build a new games studio, Codec Studios, and to develop a new £30 million video game, providing employment for over 100 highly skilled development staff for a minimum of three years."
£30 million is a lot for a studio's first game. I just wish they'd start off smaller and establish themselves with good ideas first. The industry is still run under the idea of throwing money at something and then try and make it back in the first few months or bust. Jobs will always be on the line when this is how these companies are run.

Make some smaller games and develop the bigger titles with the profits from those. Bigger titles have such a short shelf life and only owners of certain systems can buy them. Even if you're a big developer, there's no guarantee you can make money back on that.

Why Madden 15 is allowed to portray an athlete's tattoos

sega

I think what they're forgetting is that the art has been commissioned by a client who then goes on to use that art as they please. It's like designing a logo for a company - you don't have a say if they decide to stick the logo they commissioned on a new product.

I think it should be up to tattoo artists to make contracts with clients for art they DON'T want to be used in this manner, not the other way around. Tattoos are usually a personal statement that become a part of you, you shouldn't then need permission to show it off.

Of course, there's also the issue of tattoo artists using copywrited material themselves. A large number of tattoos are of people's favourite bands or even video game and movie characters. It's a bit hypocritical to kick up a fuss when your tattoo is used in a game and then you go and take money to give someone a Pacman tattoo.

If game sales don't matter after the first few months then why all these restrictions? What are they trying to protect? Technically Final Fight Streetwise isn't the latest instalment as you can argue that Ultra Street Fighter 4 is. It has two of the main protagonists as playable characters, three of the enemies and most of the rest (including Haggar) as background cameos. Even the car smashing bonus stage is the same location, complete with crying Mad Gear member.

I think that's a testament to Final Fight's great character design when even the common enemies have become fully fleshed out characters in the Street Fighter series.
