Here's the official, Halo lore explanation for why Cortana is naked

sanloc

Wow, it's weird how different this reads in text compared to listening to the guy explain it in the video. Personally I'm not a fan of the new Cortana and find it a bit cringe-worthy but it genuinely doesn't sound like 'just getting a naked chick on screen' was the sole impetus for the art/ design team.

"The transformation was painful. We paid the price"

sanloc

The problem is Crytek are known for delivering visually stunning games with pretty shallow gameplay. This works fine in short bursts (like an 8-10 hour boxed product) but if they want to appeal to the hobby f2p - which is good, better DOTA than Kim Kardashian - in needs to be built off solid design with the depth to support dedicated plays for hundreds of hours. Good luck to them but nothing they've shown is massively convincing and targeting people who have the nerve to stand up against not being paid is a real scuzzy move!

Sony explains PS4 digital game pricing

sanloc

They need the retail stores at launch because you can't download the console digitally. If the stores didn't make money with point-of-sale games because everyone is waiting to download online when they get home, there's very little incentive for big hitters like Tesco to stock the consoles at all. I'd imagine we'll start seeing Steam style sales once they've got a good install base, until then, its cutting off the branch you're sitting on.

Microsoft: Killer Instinct "the world's most generous demo"

sanloc

This seems like a really interesting step in f2p/freemium. A lot of f2p evangelists talk up how it gives players choice however what I'd choose in some games is to pay to remove the freemium hooks and just immerse myself in the gameplay. Looks like you'll be able to do that here! I think the only thing they're missing on is having the 'demo character' switching out every few months as opposed to weekly. Seems like a few months is too long to keep interest going.

Super Meat Boy devs troll dodgy-sounding movie producer

sanloc

Is it just me or is this not massively dodgy, he's basically saying "gimmie a deposit for writing this treatment for you, if it goes forward cool, I'll give ya some of the money back as a goodwill, if not we walk away and I'm not out of pocket". Also, being able to deal with people who don't know a lot about your industry should be hailed as a skill not an affliction. Personally I thought he stayed pretty calm and reasonable throughout.

Xbox One's Family Sharing feature may return, Microsoft says

sanloc

@FireMonkey Ah fair dos, I think the paste-bin was where I got that from yeah. It did sound pretty plausible but you're right, not necessarily reliable. Seems strange to announce such a (potentially) great feature but be so vague about the implementation.
1 1

sanloc

As far as I saw, the Family Sharing thing is a bit of a misnomer. Basically it was just a way of giving people on your friends list a 40min to 1 hour timed demo, similar to the full game trials of PS+. Players would then have the option to buy the game and carry on where they left off. Weird to call it 'Family Sharing', they've got two words to describe the feature and one is wrong, makes it seem more household orientated i guess. Also, I'm not sure why they'd have to remove this because of the online checks, I suppose it was a small part of the online focussed approach that didn't really make sense on it's own.

Rambo: First footage unearthed

sanloc

I'd say calling this 'gameplay footage' is a bit disingenuous, its in-game but cinematics don't (necessarily) equal gameplay. Had the same problem with the GTA V vid the other day, you can count the seconds of actual game-play on one hand... also pretty much everything EA confidently announced as gameplay at E3. I know its just a marketing thing and it makes sense but it feels like the video equivalent of the bullshot.

The Football Playbook review

sanloc

@SuperRockGames I'd say ramp up the complexity at bit slower, focus on passes to start with, then introduce runs and potentially dribbling? I think the menus could definitely do with being faster if possible and maybe add a toggle to have the game play out at double speed (like New Star Soccer). Totally recommend people should download this though, its free and great fun!
0 0

sanloc

@SuperRockGames Good on you for giving it more love, its a really neat idea at it's core! Having played it a bit, I'd say the menu system is a bit confusing (the important buttons seem really small or in faded tones) and transitions could be a bit snappier. I think it might be worth ramping up the game slower and creating scenarios where players learn different techniques before layering them together (a la level design in Super Meat Boy). Finally, retrying a level should keep the player's previous inputs. Might be worth getting rid of the offside rule too, seems a bit hard to judge and adds more frustration than fun. Looking forward to V1.1 and beyond, awesome work guys!

Finished it last night and it really is a great experience. Agree that it might well have been medium-breaking if it hadn't fallen back on so much combat and over the top violence. Also not a big fan of how or why Elizabeth gets all corsetted and boobs out as the game progresses. It felt like the game thought I was regressing as I played.

Anyone else think this might be the generation where we can make believable fugly people. I'm not saying that in a bad way, I think its great to have more relatable characters. The developer behind Activision's first-person Walking Dead game says don't judge it on old footage

sanloc

@nuanimal "Time is the ultimate enemy of any game... the date gets cut off and you just have to make the game at that point." - This paragraph sounds like limiting expectation. I can't imagine someone saying that if they truly believe in what they're putting out. FI feel for the guy, its never fun having to hawk a product you're not totally convinced by. On the upside, sometimes devs get so close to a project they only see the flaws and think a great game is crap, lets hope thats the case here!
