Atari co-founder Ted Dabney dies aged 80

samharper

Ah my dad died of aesophageal cancer too, it really sucks. Very painful way to go. Atari may be a hollow shell of a company now, but it was absolutely instrumental in giving us what we have today. Obviously Pong was so influential it needn't be discussed, just a complete phenomenon.

DF Retro: Revisiting E3 2004 - PlayStation Portable vs Nintendo DS

samharper

As much as I enjoyed the DS, the PSP won me over with its excellent Metal Gear titles, the three F1 games, the PS1 compatibility, Gran Turismo and the two best Ridge Racer games ever made. Loads of decent PS2 ports of some quite large games like ToCA Race Driver helped too.

Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Battle Royale mode called Blackout, has vehicles

samharper

Wonder if it'll have split screen, that would be cool. Shame the campaign is gone because that was Black Ops' strong point, but it still looks like there's a lot going into this, and honestly sounds like it could be the best CoD on PC in years. Having Beenox port it with tweaked gameplay and putting it on Battle.net, sounds a lot like Destiny 2, and say what you will about how crap the game is, that PC port is fantastic. The standard multiplayer will hopefully still be excellent if it lives up to the standard of the other three, and I think the individual operator stories sound kinda interesting and somewhat similar to what Battlefield 1 had, and more than the likes of Overwatch have. Contrary to the general feeling here, I'm cautiously optimistic.

@clarkec321 Might be a bit strawman-y but I'll ask anyway because I'm curious... do you have a problem with the way lootboxes were going to be handled in Battlefront 2 or are handled in Overwatch or FIFA? Becuase this is pretty much the same thing but worse with the paid for keys like CS:GO or TF2.

Managed to play through it with a Phenom X2 quad core, 4GB of RAM and a 9800GT, can't remember the settings though! That was in 2010, haven't really touched it on PC since. It gets pants later on once the aliens get properly involved, but the opening 3 or 4 missions are incredible. The VTOL section was crap so I didn't mind that it was missing from the PS3 version. Still haven't played Warhead, any good?

For Honor re-review - a troubled wargod finally gets into its stride

samharper

@Sour_Grapes Meh I played it for about 4 hours and I think I'm done until they add more weapons or ships, the melee combat is laughably bad. I do have Game Pass (great stuff) but the average consumer doesn't. My point was that I don't think that EG or most of the reviewers missed the point, more that people are creating this point after-the-fact. I mean Gran Turismo Sport launched with a similar issue but the content came thick and fast and the online side of the game is supremely well developed.

You wouldn't happen to be a re-incarnation of the recently banned DingBot_1337?
2 3

samharper

@Sour_Grapes It doesn't say Sea of Thieves is a service on the back of the box or in the adverts, it mentions content being added over time on the store page but it also says "Packed to the seams with sailing and exploring, fighting and plundering, riddle solving and treasure hunting, Sea of Thieves has everything you need to live the pirate life you’ve always dreamed about", which isn't quite the case. It's not being marketed to the general public as a service, that's for sure.

Eurogamer Q&A: What's the best reboot?

samharper

Pax Man Championship Edition DX is incredible. But, rather controversially perhaps, I think my favourite might be Splinter Cell. Conviction had its problems but it injected some much needed life into the franchise, and was the game the Bourne game should have been. Then it was followed up by the incredible Blacklist so... yeah.

Although I guess in a way Metal Gear Solid was a reboot for the Metal Gear series, so if that counts it's probably that.

Has the games industry turned tail on microtransactions?

samharper

@alsoatempaccount Games are getting more expensive and it's easy to see by the credits list at the end of games now. They're so, so long compared to the days where there were well under 100. Asset generation takes time and time is money. Your other points may be true, but cost per game and time taken to make a game has increased to the point where making short, to the point single player only games is unsustainable unless it sells absolute bucket loads. And then you need crazy amounts of advertising. I saw God of War ads on a big billboard in Edinburgh last year, and it only comes out next week. And since it takes such a long time to bring out another game afterwards you bet it's going to be milked. What these games lack in MTs they still have DLC packs and such that were frowned upon only 7 or 8 years ago. Hellblade is the only game I can think of recently that's what AAA games were like in the time of the early PS3/360, short, linear and no add ons at all, andey've had to sell it at £25 to see anything come of it. And that's from an established studio too.
1 1

samharper

@leeroye PS2 games were £50 when the PS2 was new weren't they? I remember buying new games mid gen for £40. Then the PS3 came out and games went back up. N64 games were ridiculous, Ocarina of Time was £70! IIRC the RRP has barely changed, it's that PSN is skewing our perspective. It's not too difficult for a new game to cost you £40-45 if you shop around. Then take into account inflation and the price hasn't really changed much at all, if anything it's cheaper. Steam is a different story, as it became more ubiquitous, prices went up and now it's a pretty uncompetitive place to buy games from.

Doom's new 4K patch analysed on Xbox One X and PS4 Pro

samharper

@Ferfs What I don't get with this and most games with DRS is why they put a cap on the max resolution. Titanfall 2 is about the only game I can think of that doesn't do this, and even then that was only after a patch. It's lovely to play Battlefield 1 at a resolution closer to 1080p on the X but surely if the max resolution was uncapped they wouldn't even need to wheel out an X patch (which they've said they're not going to do)?

I've just noticed you made the same comment further down.

WipEout on PSVR: an upgrade with no compromises?

samharper

@Number1Laing I suspect the PS4 version of this (and a few other games, Okami for example runs at a higher resolution on PS3!) are stuck at 1080p because PS4 Pro is the "4K console", clearly if it can run on VR at a higher resolution without any visual cutback (I turn the motion blur on this off anyway), shows the 2D version is clearly capable of more.
