PS4 gets its Media Player today

@Malek86 standard for Sony products (their weird file system structure pervades camcorders and MP3 players as well). The PS3 had an option under the Triangle menu to "View all files", so perhaps try pressing Options while the drive is selected?

This is great news! I loved Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars. I'm not sure what they can do to freshen up the game, but it'll be nice to have an active community of players again.

Hohokum review

rprince

I think finding the eyes is a far more explicit goal. You even mention that your eye score is tracked.

While I'm enjoying the exploration, and the visual and aural style, I find it frustrating that so many interactions seem to have no point, and the ones that do are seemingly at random. There's no real feeling that I need to do A to be able to do B. There's no real sense of what might be unlocked by doing certain things.

It's a shame, because Hohokum is enjoyable. I just don't think they've struck the right balance between information and exploration.

How roll7 made a game that was nearly impossible to beat

rprince

One of the Roll_7 guys brought a copy down to the queue outside the PS4 London launch. It took a while to get the hang of it (the controls are counter-intuitive to start), but then I was hooked. Unfortunately he had to move along the queue, so I was left adding a PS Vita to my Christmas List and waiting for the OlliOlli launch!

I haven't unlocked the Rad Mode yet, but the combo challenges in Neon City Pro are tough enough! Given it felt a bit like Canabalt on the surface, I was surprised at the price, but it's definitely got more than my money's worth! It's even interrupted by hardmode play-through of Guacamelee.

App of the Day: Draw Something

rprince

iSketch, since 10 years ago. It also didn't have the horrific brain numbing delay of waiting hours for an imbecile to respond. I played a random person who not only failed to guess all of my masterpieces (fair enough, I'm not very good), but could not draw a thing. Even when they got so frustrated that they tried to spell out the answer, their spelling of "scotland" looked like:

Who framed Roger Ebert?

rprince

Cracking piece. However, I have to disagree that "at this point it should be clear that Ebert doesn't know anything about games". I personally think he is spot on that the interactive experiences which eschew mechanics (rules, and perhaps, but probably not, goals), can be art, but are not games.

Just because something is on a computer and is interactive and has graphics, doesn't make it a game. A game has rules, mechanics and strategies (and occasionally an end goal). I'm not sure any one whole game is Art, because a game tends to be so much larger in scope (to consume) than a film, play, album, painting or sculpture.

However, many of the greatest games have portions of Art in them. A particular level, a certain encounter or a perfectly balanced mechanic. The first piece of game Art will no doubt be an indie minigame.

Is this necessarily bad? No! Art films are not non-stop, back-to-back Art-in-your-face, so why should games? And how can games compete with painting or sculptures, a thing that can be consumed with one glance and a whole lot of consideration. They become Art because of what they make you think or feel, which games can definitely compete with.

Iwata reacts to fallen Nintendo stock

rprince

No matter how many possibilities it opens up, none of them will be used. Look how much hype there was about how revolutionary the Wiimote was. How many games have you played that truly made use of it? Even after 5 years, there no fantastic uses of the Wiimote. Everything is a riff on the 2 or 3 waves of the wand that Nintendo introduced in Wii Sports.

All this tablet will be used for is for continuing the game when Little Jimmy's dad gets in from work and wants to watch the TV. But in this day and age, Little Jimmy would just have his own 21" LCD screen in his bedroom.

@Jetset_UK It's the same sort of technology as OnLive. OnLive can also deliver to browser. Gaikai has no hardware available, do only browser.

The difference is Gaikai is mainly (only?) targeting game demos which entice you to buy the full game as a download or disc. OnLive lets you play the whole game over streaming.

Sony details PS Store, Plus return

rprince

Erm, I don't think it counts if it's from the US blog. As I'm sure you've noticed from 4 years of the PSN, the US PS Store is run almost entirely separately from the European Store. What they do and when has absolutely no bearing on what the European store does.

PSN: Sony outlines "Welcome Back" gifts

rprince

FFS, so much wrong here.

CISO? WTF was the CIO doing? You don't need to create a new role for this to give your mate a pay rise. You should sack the moron who was in charge of "information" in the first place.

A 30 day promotion to encourage you to sign up to PSN+ and hence make you pay Sony more money in the long run does NOT sound like any form of compensation to me.

There seems to be no apology for their ineptitude (every other big company trying to be a player in online services manages to protect their data), and a continual blame-shifting: "it's the mean hackers fault; we didn't do nuffin' wrong".

And how is this news (it's on the BBC tech website too): they haven't said when it will be turned back on. Of course it's going to be turned back on, everyone expects that. What we want to know is when. (Note: it would have been news if they had decided to shut down the PSN forever).
