"Father of Sudoku" reckons Slitherlink is next big thing

quedex

You can even buy lots of slitherlink puzzle books direct from Nikoli (the people who did the ones in the DS version) [link=https://www.nikoli.co.jp/howtoget-e.htm">here.

They're well worth it. The

Can the technical wizards at EG please find a way of grabbing real screenshots from a game instead of relying on crappy fake PR shots. Is "only adequate" really that bad, or does the reviewer just have unrealistic expectations? I've got no idea about how good this game looks, or how well it compares to Legends even.

SingStar Pop Hits

Survivor was on Party, Vertigo was on Legends.
Both are on the US version of Pop, which is where they got the screenshots from.

quedex

@ManicMiner: Because Karaoke Revolution is US only? Same reason why they haven't reviewed either of the American versions of Singstar Rocks or Singstar Pop, I'd guess.

If you need a review, KR: American Idol is quite enjoyable single player, the multiplayer needs a little bit more work, although they do get bonus marks for having a much better duet mode than SingStar - you can have one person singing backing vocals for example. The "judges comments" are a nice novelty the first time you play it, but get tiring quite quickly.

Puzzle Series Vol. 5: Slitherlink

quedex

@botherer: Yes. :-)
They do two ranges of books, one goes up to 36x20, the others go up to 45x30.

That screenshot of 36x20 puzzle makes it look too awkward having to keep scrolling around, especially when you've got used to doing the same puzzles on a single sheet of paper.

Been buying the slitherlink puzzle books from japan regularly. They're great fun.
Don't see how it's supposed to work on the DS though - the puzzles are too small to be interesting.

@disc: Buy the books from Nikoli - ALL of their puzzles are hand created, and they are MUCH more satisfying to solve.

Worms

quedex

Compared to the way EG have treated other XBLA games, this was a pretty piss-poor review. You could tell right from the start that Tom didn't want to like the game. Spadge's response is spot on.

As for the weapons, I'm firmly in the "Amiga weapon set is god" camp. Things like the concrete donkey and homing clusters broke the game, and it's nice to see that T17 went back to basics.

Edit: And anyone who claims that the later weapons were needed, then take any weapon set you want, and I'll still be able to kick your wormy little butt around the map with just a ninja rope, shotgun and blow torch.

Lumines Live!

quedex

Oh and on the game, I agree with gizmo - the 360 controller sucks for this type of game, and they switched the rotate buttons around from the PSP version. Didn't stop me from enjoying the (real) demo though.

quedex

It wouldn't have been as bad if they just charged 3000 points for the full game in one hit. The problem (for me) is that they actively hide what you're getting for the money and make you buy extra modes at random times just to keep playing. Officially, MS have said that there are only two packs to buy - Base and Advanced. But the game tells you that you'll need to buy extra packs later.

It's harder to make a full, informed decision on if you want to buy the game if they can't be upfront and honest about the total cost.

Is that bundled in with the Advanced pack now, or is that still going to be an extra purchase?

I'm sure they'll be using some proper professional hardware to split a standard video input across multiple output monitors - maybe that screen is just the default output or screen saver for that video display device box.

Untold Legends: The Warrior's Code

quedex

Loading times aren't that much of an issue any more.
It still has to load up each new level, but it doesn't take anywhere near as long as it did in 1. Also, they've taken out the teleport idea, so you can go straight to the level you want instead of having to track through 3 dungeons just to get to the next location.

The whole game is much, much, much better than the first one - it compares very favourably to PS2 Baldurs Gate / Norath games.

quedex

The review seems pretty fair. Nice to see that it wasn't the typical "Argh! Hack and Slash games were boring back in the 80s! Hate them! 3/10" style review.

The game was easily as enjoyable as the Norath PS2 games to play and miles better than the first one. The developer who wrote that god-awful mess of an inventory system needs a good slap though, but the game was fun :)
