@ShiftyGeezer

What you are proposing is exactly what is happening now: social groups (audiences), not governments, decide the price of entertainment. I'd like it to stay that way.

The fact that it happens in a capitalistic society and not in a socialistic/communistic one is a matter for a debate I frankly don't want to get into.

You speak of canids. How do primates behave in comparison?

Number1Laing pretty much answered you for me.

Anyway:

I'm glad it is the market, not the governments, to evaluate artists' and entertainers' work.

Do our societies need more equity for necessary-to-our-system jobs? Hell yes, but at the same time you can't impose a price on an audience's subjective taste, because that would kill the entertainment industry and turn art into propaganda.

People have watched other people play since the dawn of time. Being sports or video games, it makes no difference. (Some) people are willing to pay for empathy, but, frankly, i think that's a good thing.

The need to feel empathy, to be involved in others' challenges, it brings people together. Not always peacefully, ok, but it is a cornerstone of our society; and probably a good exercise in problem-solving too.

@FilthyAnimal

I thought that the "Musou" genre referred to the so-called "Musou gauge" in these games. The gauge is filled by performing standard attacks, and a full gauge lets you unleash the "Musou attack", or final move. So, a Musou game is one characterised by continuous cycles of:

Normal attacks > Musou attack > normal attacks

Rinse and repeat.

(But I don't remember where I got this from).

David Cage on Detroit and its depiction of domestic violence

propalex

Art is art.

I'm not saying that what Cage does is art, but it should be treated as such, and not judged on moral grounds.

So the matter should only be whether Cage appropriately simulates domestic violence in his work or doesn't, but never if it is 'inappropriate' to simulate it in a video game.

We already have PEGI to protect the audience against what may not be suitable for them.

Ellie is clearly mutating into the Fungus Queen (see: shaking hand). In the end, her natural immunity to the infection turns her into the perfect human-fungus hybrid which, through Hivemind-control powers over the infected, would end up ruling Earth by exterminating "every last one of them" (which of course means "us"), unless brave Joel stops her.

Dance animations, Valentine's, the way Bungie communicates on their blog, and gods know what else is in the game that I'm unaware of (because I don't have it), are exactly the kind stuff that you'd find in PS HOME.

Which I find weird because HOME was vastly considered (when not completely ignored) as the virtual ghetto for those not just alone IRL, but also not very much into gaming. I too shared that opinion (without condemning anyone).

This was also very well reflected on the official PS Forums, if you ever visited their HOME section those days, doesn't matter which Country you're from.

Of course Destiny being an FPS sets it worlds apart. I was never a fan of HOME myself, though I came to know it, but Destiny is shaping into something very bizarre to me.

At least these games are honest about what they are: It's sad when devs (producers) force the same standards into any other context/genre, maybe even trying to give it some narrative reason.

That said, I think women's objectification is nothing compared to (or has everything to do with) the depths of uncanny valley this game plunges into.

Nintendo censors skimpy Xenoblade Chronicles X costumes in West - report

propalex

Option A: Lin is a strong, brave, self-confident young girl who doesn't shy away from revealing her body because her self-confidence alone keeps away every lubricious attempt or intention and you'd be a pervert to even think of her in sexual terms, bikini or not.

Option B: Lin is a robot, so it's ok.

Option C: Lin is and adult woman who had her body magically turned into that of a 13-year old, so she just looks like an underage girl.

Option D: Lin is an alien snail parasite who lives in the 13-year old body of a girl who was otherwise comatose, so Lin, the alien, is actually doing the girl a service and there's no reason to complain about bikinis.

Option E: Lin must wear only bikinis her entire life because she made a pact with a demon who would otherwise slaughter her entire family, so she's a heroine, not a sex object.

Option F: Lin's skin needs to bathe in the blood of her enemies as it gushes from their dying, torn apart bodies because that's the only way the she can feed herself.

Option G: Lin is Quiet's cousin.

It seems to much run & gun for my taste - at least for a SW title. I would have preferred a slower, more tactical, more cover dependant approach. It doesn't look like a squad-based game either (not in that map, at least). Maybe it's not important, but that gameplay doesn't feel like a Stormtrooper's day to me; It seems too fast and too much everyone for themselves.

So, Mr Kojima, do we feel "ashamed" over Quiet?

propalex

Good read, it is just a pity that a woman's insight on the matter comes also, in part, from nasty experiences.

Yet it is funny (in a good way) that after that Rich Stanton's article, this one brings us to the full circle by saying what would be otherwise obvious to all, if Kojima and his MGS series weren't so popular at least, that is: tits only mean 'tits' and they are there for no other reason than being what they are.

Now, who would have thought. ;)

To prove it's not a hoax. Well, that's what they do in the movies, anyway.

Rich Stanton on: The Koj delusion

propalex

I only ever played MGS4 and I didn't find it an enjoyable experience, story-wise, because of the schizophrenic nature of its narrative moods. I called the story pathetic, all in all, and told myself that Kojima doesn't know how to deal with subtlety, simple as that.
I remember when I was watching the Beast and the Beauty members die, each one of them, that even if I hadn't to stare at their soft body parts the whole time, I was thinking the narrative was cringeworthily overexposed enough. Which is a shame because those were - wanted to be - moments of tragic war stories the 'Beauties' had suffered.
Which brings up the controversial element of mixing sensuality with abuse. Which is what exploitative fiction does.

Now, Rich's article (great one btw) suggests that all this may be more than just deliberate, that Kojima's taste for the mash-up could be a play of metafiction - if I understand correctly - a play on the fanbase's desires by objectifying not just women's (and men's) bodies, but also the characters' human emotions, exaggeratingly so through the narrative, in a way to give the fanbase exactly what they want, but in a self-conscious - or even ironic - way?
But where's the genius in that? Even as an attempt at self-parody, where does it leave Kojima? Isn't this just either a sign of artistic insecurity or the safest way to make, you know, some more money?

Guilty Gear Xrd review

propalex

Arc System Works don't do 'Komplete' editions like Mortal Kombat does, so if one wants the current full roster on disc, they have to wait for the next installment in the series, which however will have its own dlc-only characters, so you never get to have all the characters on the bloody disc, and that slightly annoys me. Will get Xrd at some point though.
