Remember Sensible Soccer? Jon Hare returns with Sociable Soccer

@RussellP that's a really valid point and might make me back him. He's old school which might be why he's neither media-trained nor dull, and I'm not convinced that the game will capture the magic of SWOS -and there's no way in hell that I'll be able sink the hours into it that I did for Sensi (the menu music is burned on my brain forever). But for the amount of fun I had and that he was responsible for...

14 minute Watch Dogs video shows off hacking, shooting and driving

perilikid

@RunningWithScissors I agree. I was quite excited by the prospect of this - the freedom to rule the world - but watching the video made me think, as someone else said, that it was kind of a mash up between Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell. Assassin's Creed: TNG, if you will.

Particularly galling is the typical Ubisoft approach of labelling absolutely everything so that you're never in doubt as to what is available to you and what you can do with it. I can only hope that this can be modified, or that Ubisoft manages expectations to the extent that there'll still be a valuable challenge even with the options known to you.

Splinter Cell Blacklist shows off its Spies vs. Mercs mode

perilikid

Hmm. This looks encouraging. Will wait to see just how close to the original MP it is - as further iterations came out more gadgets were added which gave the illusion of complexity but actually just diluted the incredibly simple, incredibly appealing gameplay.

Plus, four versus four? I'd have to wait and see. Maybe it'll make it more accessible and popular by not only drawing in people who can work well in pairs - or are willing to be absolutely caned by players with ninja like skills rushing through levels (and teasing the mercs mercilessly). I've been on the wrong side of those a few times and there's nothing worse in MP terms. But surely it'll also have an impact on the atmosphere which thrived on being dependent on your partner? That situation where you're splitting up to cover more ground, and then you find yourself isolated, miles away from your partner - then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, you get double-teamed by the spies...

Jury's still out. But I'll be damned if this doesn't put the game back on my watch list.

Raymond: Splinter Cell popularity held back by its complexity

perilikid

@SeventhSun Agreed - it was easily the best aspect of the franchise, until they diluted the gameplay with tonnes of features to make it appeal to the wider market. Nothing has come close the simplicity and tension of crawling around vents and evading capture or tracking down spies. Easily my favourite MP experience on Xbox Live and I sometimes dream of someone - if not Ubisoft - releasing the MP mode as a standalone on Xbox Live Arcade.

Trends of 2013: The last console generation

perilikid

I remember reading an article something like 10 years ago about the absurdity of Sony and Microsoft supporting competing hardware AND software when it should really just embrace the DVD model, with common "software" and shared hardware. Not dissimilar to the PC approach, really, ensuring regular and iterative improvements whilst ensuring constant income.

But it's the latter point that bothers me. I can appreciate growth and innovation but I converted to console gaming when I grew tired of the need for constant and regular upgrades, patches, issues to resolve incompatibility of hardware, etc. I embraced the idea of buying a box, plugging it in and knowing that I would get at least four to five years' worth of gaming with that initial investment.

Perhaps more significantly, the gaming industry might want to more explicitly embrace the notion of environmental impact. There are people out there who think that releasing new pieces of technology every year, effectively building a business model on obsolescence, is A Bad Thing. Why should PC manufacturers aspire to this?

Show me an industry that takes responsibility for use of precious resources and environmental impact and I may yet be interested. In the meanwhile, I'll stick to my one box - and continue to embrace the level of much vaunted gaming innovation that has been enabled by technological limitation.

Top 50 Games of 2004: 20-11

"What's more, for all its US military background and smack-talking GIs, this is truly a gamer's game at heart - and in an artistic sense you could probably fashion an argument that in terms of creativity sparked by mankind's worst failings it's the modern equivalent of a war poem."

Tom, you never cease to amaze me. Great stuff.

Curse Ubisoft! Just as I was beginning to love them. After SoT - certainly one of the most affecting games I've played in recent years - I would've considered a sequel a must buy game, but what with Edge giving it 7 and now this, it looks like it's going to have to wait.

After an extraordinarily dull introduction that seems unbelievably bad next to what follows, the game suddenly turns up the heat to such an extent you'd swear you could smell cordite as the innards of your console spontaneously frazzle with excitement.

Rockstar reacts to San Andreas leak

perilikid

Oh, come on. If you're interested in illegally downloading games you'll know where to go these days.

If you're not an avid (read: anal) internet user stuff like this can be relevant - and no more liable to make you set out to find a download source for the game. Not everybody has to time to plough through bitorrent sites/forums for their information. Not everybody is short of breaking the law just because they don't have the right information.
