Near mint: A conversation with game collectors

peasoup

The retro market has gone crazy hasn't it? I'm not a collector like these guys but I do own a fair few old consoles and I do like to play the original games but financially it's steadily becoming a really inaccessible hobby. There are a bunch of games I would love to own and play but the prices are just silly, I really wish I'd bought everything I wanted a few years ago. Oh well at least there is always ever drives and the like.

Why the spirit of Flash gaming must never die

peasoup

So many great things came out of the Flash eco system (it provided me with a job!), yes it could be an unwieldy beast but I don't really feel like it deserved all the bad press.

It does feel like the web has lost some of its 'spark' since the flash plugins demise as HTML5/JS etc. play catch up but it is certainly time for it to go.

It lives on though through adobe air, plenty of mobile phone app/games are made within the flash ecosystem still and Adobe seem to be continuing support.

I used to play this incessantly with friends back in the day, it still comes up in conversation. So many epic battles I can't believe it's never been remade, a lost gem. I remember quite liking 2 I didn't realise it was looked down upon.

The Nintendo 64 turns 20 today

peasoup

Oh so many good times with friends. My sister had moved to America so I got her to send me one when it launched over there. We didn't have a NTSC compatible telly so I had to play it for months in black and white.....I didn't care, it just felt so next gen.

I remember when I dropped 100+ on a Japanese Mario kart 64, the one with the pad, I think we played that game for 24hours straight, in black and white hah.

Alas I ended up trading my 64 (with 30+ games!!!) for an import launch Dreamcast, while I loved the Dreamcast I do regret trading it (And all those boxed games!). Hell I regret losing any console to this day, I sold a PC Engine earlier in the year and I still feel bad about it :P any way I digress.... ::Raises glass to the 64::

I might get negged but as soon as I saw 'micro transactions' I was instantly turned off. I just refuse support this model in any way shape or form, even if it means missing out on halo 5 (arg and probably a lot of other things this gen). I'm definitely turning in to an old curmudgeon.

Nintendo to release games on phones and tablets

peasoup

Diversifying isn't a bad move, nintendo understands the the importance of it's IP so I'm sure (hope) they would do nothing to sully it. If this becomes a profitable side line which helps them fund and create for their own platforms then great. I hope it doesn't go the other way though where mobile profits negate any desire to create and maintain their own platforms....time will tell :/

That's a very depressing read. I do hope Nintendo or Sony can create some kind of resurgence in the future, I do worry though that if they (specifically Nintendo) pander to much Japan's changed gaming landscape we will end up with something nobody really wants. I have faith.

Great article and I can hardly contain my jealousy both for the trip to Japan and a Gradius 2 (My holy grail(s)).

I've recently picked up an Astro City, it sort of feels like a final nostalgic piece of the puzzle, it's so choice I highly recommend one if you have the means.

There really is nothing like playing a pcb on a cab it's a pleasure emulation will never match. It's just a crying shame about the bank balance and the urge I now have to buy an Egret 3, Mini Cute, NEO 19..... oh and the Cave shooters..

Something just doesn't sot to well with me in regards to these emulated clone systems. You just can't beat the original hardware running through a decent CRT or an XRGB Mini. You might as well just use a PC or one of the many cheapo android devices if you are going to emulate.

The Secret Developers: Wii U - the inside story

peasoup

Damn that was a good read. I couldn't help but be overcome with a sense of dread as I continued to read.

We all want Nintendo to survive and be successful, the sane and pragmatic gamers at least but what are they playing at? It feels like they have learned nothing since the gamecube/n64 era. The Wiis success was clearly a blessing and a curse as it has clearly internally confirmed/skewed their bizarre home console strategy.

I purchased a WiiU over xmas and I do love it but It's clear the machine will be a modest seller at best. I truly hope Nintendo are taking a long hard look at themselves. While it seems the 3ds is doing quite well comparatively to previous handhelds it's not doing that great. Over time mobile/tablets will continue to cannibalize their market share and erode profits so they can't necessarily rely on the handheld market to sustain themselves.

I wish I knew what the answer was even if I did though I doubt Nintendo would listen. A world without Nintendo would be a bleak place indeed. Back to Mario.....

Bullets and Toothpicks: Inside Hong Kong's gaming scene

peasoup

That was a really good read. I spent some time in HK a couple of years ago and really fell in love with the place, so much contrast. The smell of Des Voeux Road West still lingers :P

Like others I expected some kind of gaming nirvana, in my youth HK seemed somewhat mystical. A friend used to go yearly and come back with exotic things,a pc engine, neo geo, weird bootlegs,it was Magic. And yet I didn't find anything, I would of been disappointed if I hadn't had such a great time.

This thread would of been a treasure trove of advice, one day I will go back.

What the hell is that?

peasoup

Getting old? Becoming overly cynical? Perhaps, definitely in other avenues of my life but for me this hobby has always kindled a child like wonder and awe and that's something I will try and hang on to.

New console releases are an exciting thing. I was excited when I first saw a NES,SNES etc, hell even a Jaguar and this pattern has continued right up to the new generation. I never bought a Jag though, why? Because the release games were underwhelming and we're just seeing that play out again.

It's a poor launch plain and simple, they have failed to capture our sense of awe and wonder. So I will sit on the sidelines for now and hope they get there act together.

I'm actually quite upset following the direct feed. I really wanted a reason to buy a Wii U, for me they just haven't delivered.
