Ready Player One film review - garish and nostalgic, but Spielberg gets games

pauleyc

2 months ago

I'll be pleasantly surprised if Spielberg's film rises above the source material which in my opinion was quite terrible. I had certain hopes for Ready Player One - some reviewers made it out to be the next geek bible, the next Neuromancer or Snow Crash. Sadly it turned out to be a disappointing and fairly irritating juvenile fantasy, pure wish fulfillment without any depth.

From Oli's review it would seem that Spielberg was able to inject at least some of his "new adventure cinema" magic into a poor story.

John Wick, Gateway, and my love for a good video game hub

pauleyc

1 year ago

@scoop

I remember, I played it around 1994. It was a rather solid experience but unfortunately did not manage to have the same influence as the original game. I guess it was quite similar to the rest of the books in Pohl's saga; the first book is and will always be the masterpiece.

When I saw the title I hoped it referred to Pohl's excellent novel. I was not disappointed. I would recommend not only the book - one of my all-time favourites - but also the surprisingly decent Legend Entertainment interactive fiction (a.k.a. text adventure) 1992 game of the same name. It also made a good use of the hub approach and managed to convey the ideas and emotions of the book like the dread of stepping out into an unknown and deadly galaxy.

Thank you, Christian, a very interesting article.

Remember Star Control? A new one is in development

pauleyc

2 years ago

@ShiftyGeezer

Except I'm not arguing that a modern Star Control game should adopt the same/similar planet view as in the original. I'm just saying that this presentation of the planet exploration feels weird and somehow not appropriate; my point of view is that even the old and extremely limited presentation felt more believeable than this. I don't know, for instance maybe a flatter, simplified voxel landscape would be better.

Star Control was never about realism, the playful nature and art style of the aliens were far from it. But this just feels somehow wrong.

pauleyc

2 years ago

@ShiftyGeezer

That's true and yet I prefer the old approach if only because its simplicity facilitated for me a better suspension of disbelief. I still felt like I was exploring a planet, not a cartoon rendition of The Little Prince's tiny asteroid.

Maybe it's the curvature, close horizon or point of view but it just feels...wrong.

edit: Just to clarify - I was referring to the DOS version with its tiny surface lander viewport on the lower right side, not even the enhanced 3DO version or the remaster (although they were certainly an improvement).

pauleyc

Star Control 2 is certainly in my top 5 favourite games ever released. However, I'm not exactly optimistic how Stardock will handle the material; the system map looks nice enough but the planet surface...it looks rather like a small asteroid, without any sense of scale. I wouldn't expect Elite or even No Man's planet sizes and details but that looks like an overly cartoonish mobile/tablet game.

pauleyc

@zippie151

Absolutely, EA is known for acquiring studios only to close them a bit later; after all they've built up quite a reputation over this in the past 20 years*. However - considering GOG's main business - their Origin platform is...well, decent, at least compared to the utter abomination that is Uplay.

edit:

Forgot about that asterisk, it was supposed to be a small anecdote regarding EA and Origin Systems. EA bought Origin in 1992, about 5 months after Origin released the excellent Ultima 7. Richard Garriott managed to sneak in a nice reference regarding his thoughts about EA - the 3 elements of power that the evil Guardian needed to enter Britannia were a cube, a sphere and a tetrahedron which made up the old EA logo.

I don't understand it, isn't the final paragraph usually enough to summarize a game's quality? Is reading those 4-5 sentences (or the whole review - perish the thought!) such a great burden that so many people would rather complain about the missing total numerical score?

Elite: Dangerous and the art of the galactic grind

pauleyc

3 years ago

@CaptainKid

Botting in-game is not really possible IMO, at least it would be a very impressive feat on its own if somebody managed to create an application that will play Elite automatically. Outside of the game it's equally unlikely unless someone manages to hack and spoof the network traffic between the client and the servers.
1 0

pauleyc

@CaptainKid
My understanding is that while the prices are global, no player is rich enough to fully control the market. You can't really block trade/selected systems nor move that many goods on your own (there is a "Lakon 9 effect" named after the biggest hauler but even that has a capacity of 400-something tons - markets have demands that usually don't go below 5000 t).

The galaxy should be big enough for all players to get a piece of the trading action. It might take longer and require some effort but isn't that the point?
2 1

pauleyc

3 years ago

@IronGiant

Honestly, this is *nothing* like GTA in space: the missions are pretty basic compared to GTA, you can avoid fighting if you try and you absolutely can make a living out of trading. You just need to invest some effort in finding profitable routes.

This is very much the old Elite or Frontier (without the planetary landings and some specific mission types).

"As for you not being able to find the entrance to stations...fucking hell. There's no accounting for stupidity is there?"

It's quite ridiculous how many times this argument is brought up considering that it affects only the Coriolis type, the stations always spin counter-clockwise on the entrance side and the letter box slot is clearly visible on the HUD once the station is targeted.

@Ian-Beale

There's nothing wrong asking for console versions as such. Games are ruined by chaotic developers, unimaginative publishers, shoddy porting and lazy downsizing of features in order to meet a lowest common denominator as a primary design decision.

In this case the game was developed for the target platform in the first place. If Frontier can adjust the engine and controls to suit consoles, I'm all for it. After all, it will broaden the fan base and (hopefully) bring the developer even more money to keep Elite running.

All I can say is well done, E: D is a great game even in its current unfinished beta status; I certainly don't regret paying for the Premium beta access. The end of 2014 however is a very ambitious deadline considering that a lot of work is still required (mining, missions, more station types, more ships) but I really wouldn't mind if it slipped to next year.
