The Caretaker is killing me - by far the hardest boss in the game so far, next to him the Wild Hunt was more of a tame fishing expedition. I'm level 38 and I suck. :(

Well (a) this looks fantastic, (b) while the plot clearly draws inspiration from Wasteland, the gameplay itself looks much more like Fallout. Which is no bad thing.

Very much looking forward to playing this - I hope the story does evolve in Wasteland's direction, that was truly epic.

I suppose if I were to factor in my Twitter activity since I stopped posting in the forum, I might still be in the top three... ;/

EG was a huge part of my life for the best part of a decade, and while it probably held me back from fixing the Middle East and inventing a cure for the common cold, I don't regret it. I love each and every one of you except morris and I don't mean that sincerely except the bit about morris.

Oh Doom... There's never been a gaming moment quite like that very first level. Running up the stairs - up stairs! - and looking out of the window at the fantasy landscape beyond. It represented a greater leap forward than any single game I can think of. The Hobbit & Tomb Raider are the other ones that came close to that "OMFG what am I witnessing?!" sense of awe at the future being realised in front of my eyes.

I played it to death at work, in the days before sysadmins where anyone with a tad of computing know-how could set up their machines to run whatever they liked. Good times. Me & my boss played through the entire game together in between negotiating the GATT Uruguay Round. :D

Star Wars: The Old Republic Review

otto

Good review. I get the sense that this is missing the humour and the colour of WoW; important elements (for me). What about exploration? Discovering new and wildly diverse zones at lower levels was one of the ways WoW got its hooks into me. Does SWTOR deliver that?

@monkfishjoe "The Gamesindustry.biz forum is full of industry workers who have good and 'edgy' debate using thier real names. People shouldn't want to hide if thier comments are worth while."

GI.biz is a closed environment, you have to create an account to get in to see the comments. It's a specialist site for the industry, it's not the same thing at all. If you are, say, a politician, or a public official working in a sensitive field, you are not going to talk politics or current affairs or swap personal anecdotes on a public forum (like EG) under your own name for any journalist to google and quote out of context.

"Changing to a real name system would, at a stroke, ensure that players are attached to a single identity, removing their ability to anonymously abuse or troll other users. It would force people to think about the possible consequences of what they were writing, now that it was attached to their real names - to ask themselves whether they really wanted a future employer, doing a quick Google search, to turn up abusive tirades on a gaming forum, or worse, racist, sexist or homophobic statements."

Wishful thinking Rob. The fact of the matter is that most posters simply don't have the foresight or self-control to think that far ahead. Most of us - anonymous or not - can be identified fairly quickly by what we've posted over the years, and who among us hasn't posted something they've regretted? (Oh boy have I regretted it on occasion...) So I think you can take it as read that the fear of future discovery isn't a massive disincentive to trolldom. It's totally unrealistic to expect a 14-year-old (say) to hold back on the flames because of what a future employer or girlfriend might think of him in ten or twenty years' time. (I can think of one classic example on this forum of a poster who said something about a teacher and that teacher googled himself and found the comment and worked out the real person behind the anonymous forumite, with hilarious/tragic consequences...)

Meanwhile, many of the most prolific and respected contributors to online forums (the EG forum for example) would simply not be here if they were obliged to post under their own names. Would people working for high profile developers, professionals in the public eye, people in sensitive jobs risk posting freely online if they weren't protected by at least a veneer of anonymity? Yeah it's not hard to work out the true identities of most people after a few thousand posts on a place like the EG forum, but there's a world of difference between being actively sleuthed out and appearing in google rankings under one's own given name for anyone to find in a casual search.

Mixed feelings about the changes to be made to the old zones. On the one hand, I love their willingness to change the world with world events and give the player a sense of being involved in an evolving story, and who can possibly argue with tarting up Desolace? On the other hand, I'm really going to miss Auberdine. :( Also, not sure I like the sound of wrecking some of my favourite zones with lava.

Now I wonder if they'll let me cash in my real life degree for some instant skill-ups in archaeology?

Blizzard launches new Battle.net

"Eventually, our plans are for the Achievement system to become an account-based system... For now, the points are just a WOW character score," said former WOW lead designer Jeff Kaplan last year. "As we graduate to that Blizzard Account system, which is right on the horizon, it will switch over to a Blizzard Level... Rather than call it a 'score', we just wanted it to be like you're levelling up on Blizzard games."

DS Book Collection on Boxing Day

otto

"The collection has a lighter side too, though, with a couple of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes mysteries, some high adventure from Alexandre Dumas, Jules Verne and Robert Louis Stevenson, wit from Wilde, Swift and Twain, an Edgar Allen Poe collection, and even a bit of racy old D. H. Lawrence for bored housewives everywhere."

OK Oli now I know you're not setting yourself up as F. R. Leavis but, really... come on. Lawrence is not some kind of fluffy lightweight gusset-busting housewife trash. Naughty. Beta gamma double minus. >:p
