Dishonored PC system requirements revealed

ostrasized

Those specs are practically identical to each other.

Either it's a masterpiece of optimisation which'll run on anything, or there isn't a distinction between 'low' and 'reccomended' (and 'console' :-)

Hmm... I'm sure Dishonored is artistically wonderful, but Arkane's last title (Dark Messiah) really didn't run that well on the low-spec settings.

Only 20% of players will finish Hitman: Absolution, reckons IO

ostrasized

Tell you what, you guys make the game polished enough that I *want* to play through it multiple times, and we'll all be happy.

On the other hand, if you leave in too many frustrating bugs and difficulty spikes so that I feel like completing a level is a chore, and the next level is my reward - guess what... I won't bother replaying it.

Alternatively, you could do something clever with time - like Nintendo did with Majora's Mask, or like the Back To The Future movies did, and let me experience the same event multiple ways?

Or - how about a different idea - do something meta with the game, so that my previous playthroughs have some kind of effect on later ones (e.g. an XP system where going through the same door 50x is worth less than going through 5 different doors).

However, what you probably mean is that you've gone and built a load of rather complex maps with lots of finickity bits and you've got dumb AI guards patrolling all of them, and your testing budget is higher than you expected, so you hope people will forgive your relatively short playing time.

Kinect "can't do a good lightsaber game"

ostrasized

That's OK. Move won't be able to do a good lightsaber game either.

How can you possibly duel Darth Vader if both your lightsabres go through each other?

Swordfighting where the swords can't touch? Yeah, great fun.

Oh, unless you're going to show your sword clashing with Vader's sabre, but your own hand is down at your hip at the end of the swing? How do you plan to resynchronise, Sony?

Lollerskates.

Digital Foundry vs. OnLive

ostrasized

We're all being taken for a massive ride. They're very clever, and their business model works perfectly, but their product is not really for us - we're just the people who're paying attention right now, and generating the press they need.

OnLive will be installed in HOTELS and CRUISE SHIPS and maybe even AIRPLANES. It will stream Plants Vs Zombies, Puzzle Quest and The Sims at $5 per hour, and make a fortune.

As if retro-fitting online play into an arcade machine was easy.

If it really is a 'poor excuse' for not including internet play, where there can be 0.2s between a player pushing a button and their opponent even being able to know about it, thanks to the sodding speed of light, then frankly this is a 'poor excuse' for an objective review.

Internet forum goons are expected to make silly statements like 'no online play? Waaa!'. Reviewers are expected to know something about their industry. As if anyone would retrofit internet play into a product costing 5!

Actually, the intellectuals are likely to be reading books and newspapers, instead of wasting their time on computer games.

Okami

ostrasized

Yeah, I guess a 10 is warranted if you like it enough.

I'd have given it a 9 though - the first few hours or so are very boring indeed (l guess having an irritating small glowing thing that won't shut UP is another way it's like Zelda), and there are some bugs with the way the combat pointer brush has been implemented.

Okami Wii gets Euro date

ostrasized

I imported this (played the PS2 version too) and found they'd cocked up the one single most important thing in the whole game.

The wii pointer for using the brush in combat sucks.

Problem is, it seems like their pointer implementation just isn't as good as other titles. The brush jitters unpleasantly, and the only way to draw accurately is to draw slowly.

The problem with the PS2 version was that the brushwork thing was a little bit cumbersome. You paused the game, positioned your cursor with the stick, pressed down and then pushed the stick in a direction to get a nice straight sweeping stroke - 100%, every time success.

I had thought the Wii controls would be a perfect replacement for this - and they could have been, but they've been badly programmed. Because of the jitter, you can't reliably draw the stroke in the direction you want. If you draw the stroke too slowly, and get the line perfect, the game goes 'oh, you didn't draw that fast enough' so it doesn't count it as a combat slice move, and just coats your target in ink. If you flick the wiimote fast enough to qualify as a combat slice, you often miss because it's jittered in a slightly wrong direction. Woe betide you if you try and do anything clever like hit two targets with one slice.

I don't know whether the conversion team used the older version of Nintendo's controller library (this year's new one is vastly better) or if they just didn't bother smoothing the brushstrokes, but fundamentally they've borked the controls on their game.

Oh, and just in case anyone mentions it, my setup is fine thanks - I don't get reflections or tricksy sensor bar rubbish, and other games (Link's crossbow training, Ghost Squad, Resident Weevil) are all absolutely fine with fast accurate pointing.

Okami on Wii - epic disappointment, IMHO.

Ha ha. As if any after-market peripheral has ever had any effect.
Every game ever made will have to be controlled by the official joypad - it'll be in Microsoft and Sony's TRCs. Thus every devteam will focus on those. No matter how good the Freedom is, it won't survive, because no-one will write software for it, because no-one will buy it, because no-one will write software for it.

As has always happened with peripherals - even official 1st party ones.
