Editor's blog: I am sexist

nick-h

Looking at this from another angle in a more direct way:

Tom isn't really sorry for anything. The article morphs from an apology for what he thinks is a tiny amount of sexism, into a damning criticism of anyone who dares to say that they're not also guilty of the same thing.

This is the sort of "institutional sexism" or "institutional racism" argument I've come to expect from people who have "realised" that they are sexist, or racist, or whatever you like, and that it's not their fault, it's society's fault.

They then spend the remainder of their lives in an intellectual cage - where they must "atone" for their own sins by attacking perceived sins in other people and making them suffer for it. That's why you were leading the charge against Ubisoft for the "sexism" of writing male protagonists into an Assassin's Creed game.

This is the same Ubisoft which, in the last year alone, made a game about a female pirate assassin, and a black female enslavement escapee - just for the Assassin's Creed series alone.

That's just nuts. It's the same people making the same game with the same story and the same paper-thin characters, but yesterday it was good and today it is evil, because today the characters are men.

That is sexist. Do you know what would be really revolutionary and anti-sexist?

You could judge things on their own merits, and you could judge people as people - not as unconscious parts of a machine which is designed to make men hate women.

/rant.

Incidentally, the tying-a-woman-to-the-rails thing is not without literary context. I thought this was common knowledge, but in the early days of film it was a cliché for the dastardly villain to kidnap the hero's love interest and tie her to the rails. Silent film conventions generally meant that the plot had to be painted in broad, obvious strokes, and that sort of thing is what you got.

The making of The Thing

nick-h

Something really comes through from the interview which throws a light on the game itself and its creation.

In all of the usual respects, the game doesn't seem to excel in any particular area.

However, the spirit of the team and its... infectious... wish to make the best game they could from a film they loved, underpins the whole article.

It's something we really need more of, in a world of suits, layoffs and Mountain Dew. Pioneering spirit.

For that reason, I hope those guys have all enjoyed successful ventures after this game.

Happy Star Wars day!

Christian, consider another way this except might be interpreted:

"rousing patriotic pomp warbling over a scene of abject dereliction and failure to create a moment that's as neat, as sharp and as ironic as anything in BioShock's Rapture."

As I was reading it, my first reaction was to think you were dismiss this game's efforts as being hopeless next to Bioshock.

Sony developing Gran Turismo film

GRAN TURISMO - TREATMENT (top secret!)
Copyright M Night Shyamalanalamalan (plz let me direct it! I promise there won't be a silly and ridiculous twist!)

In which our hero, Ben Simmons enters, buying a Toyota Yaris with his hard-earned savings - the beginning point in his ultimate quest for glory!

ACT I

Ben goes straight to the Sunday Cup where he can do a race without a license. But when he gets there, he meets the Villain - Ron Jones, that nasty hunky guy who spilled Ben's coffee and even made a pass at his girlfriend! He will be driving a Nissan Silvia, surely a terrible opponent to face.

They line up for the Autumn Ring (short) track and get started. Ben is doing quite well in the first lap, but Ron is still in first place. With immense bravery, determination and courage, Ben just about succeeds and wins the race by an inch. Ben is very happy but Ron warns him that the true test will be the Grand Valley Speedway.

ACT II

It's not long before the race begins. Ben has used the money from his first victory to buy a replacement Rev Limiter Chip and a Racing Air Filter along with Sports Medium tyres. This all looks great, but he underestimates the very first corner and ends up in the gravel. Having no hope of catching up, he retires.

Ben is down, but not out - and strives to better himself. In a stunning montage, we see him complete license tests - we see fast and exciting cars, getting better all the time - we see flags and stopwatches - we see officials writing things in clipboards and so on. There is a mysterious official who seems to take interest but we never see his face.

Finally, Ben is shown the Ultimate Challenge - "nine drivers out of ten never attempt this test - and of those who do, ninety-nine out of a hundred fail". It is the Coffee Break. Drive around in an ever-widening circle, knocking over each traffic cone in turn. And do it within a time limit. He nervously accepts the challenge, and to his complete amazement, through much effort and some nail-biting final moments, he succeeds! He is congratulated and the mysterious official, who has a coffee mug, gives someone a key to give to Ben. It is the key for a Mitsubishi 3000GT. The not-mysterious official says that this car is the prize for doing a test that only one other person has ever managed on his first attempt.

ACT III

With the new car, Ben goes back to the Grand Valley Speedway race. We see Ron Jones gloating over his regular victories - in fact, he's got himself a new car, the villainous and slightly chavvy Honda S2000. When he sees Ben, he mocks him greatly and challenges him to race.

Off they go! This time, Ben is very careful of the infamous first corner. Ron is getting ahead, but Ben is still in the game. Round and round they go, with the lovely tunnels and that fantastic bridge. They swap positions here and there, and it looks like Ron generally has the upper hand. On the last turn, they're neck and neck. Ron tries to push Ben into the gravel on the outside. It looks grim. Ben's girlfriend is in the audience looking shocked and upset. But then Ben thinks of all his training and simultaneously hits the brake and the handbrake! Ron spins out of control into the gravel and it's game over for him! Ben carries on to victory!!

And then just when you think it's all over, the mysterious official comes out and IT'S A CAMEO OF KAZUNORI YAMAUCHI!! He looks at the Mitsubishi and says, this was my car when I was your age, and I won many races. He slyly hints that he was the only other person in history to master the Coffee Break challenge on his first attempt. No-one would EVER have guessed the connection between him, the key, and that Coffee Break challenge - named thus because he casually attempted it in his coffee break between monitoring license tests.

This will be the best racing game tie-in movie ever!

Microsoft will "aggressively challenge" any government attempt to use Kinect for snooping

nick-h

@Dave52 Ah, it won't come on if you mention Allah or Jihad - the CIA and FBI are no longer permitted to specify Islamic terrorism as such in public or in their intelligence reports or training materials.

That might be Islamophobic - even though since the beginning of ramadan there have been a documented 1,903 casualties from specifically jihadi violence.

What I suggest is that XBone buyers should store a piece of paper in the bank that says "when I talk at length about a plan to bomb a train station at such-and-such a date, I am testing the PRISM system and whether Microsoft is still a government lackey."

Then, when you start deliberating over a 'plan to bomb a train station', you'll have proven a point and there should be enough reasonable doubt for you to walk free after questioning.

Honestly, this whole thing reminds me of that Blackadder thing when the two actors are rehearsing their script about a plot to kill the prince. Too bad they had to rehearse it behind closed doors in the prince's palace.

Having read this article a second time, I've concluded like other commenters that it does not qualify as a review. This is an angry rant worthy of the Socialist Worker. It is of value only to people who brand others as sexist and racist because they are terrified of being similarly branded themselves.

So that does explain the Tourette's-like lash at Nigel Farage, for instance - and the fact that the opening was so nonsensical that I first thought EG had borrowed one of the RockPaperShotgun writers. (unless they got over that whole non-sequitur fad)

Gran Turismo 6 demo vs. Gran Turismo 5

I played the demo, and on half of Autumn Ring it was so juddery that I couldn't concentrate on the race. I would estimate 15fps.

It also overheated my PS3, something which only happened once to me before (because of horribly dusty vents).

I think the new handling model was interesting, but it was rash and irresponsible to rush out a broken demo.

Also the AI was worse than GT5's. Cars kept steering into me from behind.
