@CaptainKid

Why have you assumed that video games built around the adventures of men are the only way to appeal to men?

Anyway, the angered tone in response to a rather jokey into suggests you might not be picking up some the nuances in this.

Watch us play New Super Luigi U from 5pm BST

mr_shoe_uk

@Bluetooth
While 'new' is a bit of an entertaining misnomer, the series has only 4 entries across 5 years and 4 consoles, and each one has a lot more novelty than any of the 4 single console Gears of War games (for example).

Why the NSMB hate?

The previous ones in the same series that have only had one iteration per console, with a gap of 3 years until last year?

Wii U external hard drive required to download Lego City Undercover, Nintendo says

mr_shoe_uk

Bit of an overreaction in the comments? You can still get the game on disc, which seems to be Nintendo's primary strategy still.

If you're downloading games over the blu-ray you're probably tech savvy enough to get a decent external hard drive.

Nintendo responds to Mario sequelitis criticism

I don't even know where this criticism is coming from, most Nintendo series are much much less than annual, every 2 to 3 years perhaps, and generally unique and of exceptionally high quality.

Going Hardcore in Diablo 3

Compelling arguments, but the main problem is that you're pretty likely to die from lag at the moment, and that isn't going to be fun.

I'm leaving hardcore until the servers are more consistently stable.

3DS breaks Japanese sales records

mr_shoe_uk

I'm drawing a blank on too many classic console games from western devs too...

After dabbling in PS3 and 360, the Wii is still my favourite console this generation, because it has the most game I love, and they're mainly Japanese.

Pretty much anything western I prefer on PC (shooters, RPGs), and it's only a few console titles (and especially bayonetta) that have pushed the other consoles for me.

"I mean I never reset high score tables in arcades before dropping my pennies"

But this isn't like locking the highscore table. This is like you playing Double Dragon and finding your game starts on the last level, or playing R-Type and finding you already have a bunch of extra weapons and 10 lives.

No, it isn't like that.

Great game by the way, despite being really busy I've put over 7 hours into it this weekend.

Nintendo dismisses need for Achievements

mr_shoe_uk

Once you've got over the initial 'what's the point in playing without achievements?' lunacy, I've been finding DS and PSP gaming recently a liberating experience, just take it at your own pace and enjoy what and how you like, without bothering with (generally poor) arbitarty challenges, often resulting in a restriction on how you play.

Just for the record?

mr_shoe_uk

To clarify my flippant comment earlier -

I didn't find it a bad article, but most Eurogamer readers probably knew that all of the post-release posturing was meaningless manipulation of numbers. From personal experiece, it is clear that MW2 and GTA4 had a much greater reach outside of a core group of fans, and we probably know more people who got them.

The only reason the article seems relevant is that Eurogamer kept on publishing non-news items like "Microsoft set for biggest game launch ever with Halo: Reach"

LittleBigPlanet 2 Beta

mr_shoe_uk

The more I play Little Big Planet the more I love it.

That platforming is not as satisfying as, for example, Mario, but still a lot of fun when you get used to it, and Media Molecule's own levels were excellent. Some of the best co-op I've ever played with my girlfriend.

The editor is indeed overwhelming, but you can stop whenever you're comfortable. If you have a good idea for a platformer that will flow together nicely you can simply plonk down anti-grav platforms in the right place and leap from them.

The contraptions and scene-dressing available can push further and further into whatever you want to create, but the game can still be hugely enjoyable without delving this far.

MS: Halo: Reach will outsell COD: Black Ops

mr_shoe_uk

I doubt it...

The advert playing on tv is quite poor, the character design doesn't work in 'real life' and will sum up why a lot of people prefer the military themed Call of Duty.

---

Edit - 32 negative reps? I'm not saying anything about the games, I'm looking forward to Reach and am quite confident it will be superior, but does it, and its advert, have the broad appeal that have seen Call of Duty become so enormously successful? I doubt it.

"Wii the best console for platformers"

mr_shoe_uk

It probably is for demographic. It also has the best recent platformers, 2D or 3D, especially New Super Mario Bros and Mario Galaxy 1 & 2. Wouldn't say this is necessarily due to the features of the wii.
