Spec analysis: Durango vs. Orbis

monty2k

5 years ago

@darkmorgado

It's a dev kit from several months ago. These kits go through many iterations and are given extra amounts of RAM and other bells and whistles that the normal consoles don't have. Look at the dev kit history of the PS3 here. There are at least 3 or 4 different versions in less than a year. Why are you so confident that these are the final ones for the durango/orbis?

Although I'm sure some aspects will end up in the final hardware there will always be unknown values. Look at the Wii U's GPU. Several weeks of the most careful nerd NeoGAF analysis and it's power is still unknown. To truly get a measure of the next gen's power, we'll have to wait for announcements and see some games. Until then it's all speculation and about generating hits.

@aa2br

I absolutely agree with you. I'll end up buying the console with the best games.

This article is all speculation anyway. Truth is that there is no concrete information on either console. It's all an exercise in generating hits.

Maybe we can have some proper guesswork articles after Sony's announcement on the 20th.

HMV started doing click and collect a few weeks ago. Although it was probably a case of "too little, too late", not to mention I never saw any publicity for it apart from a small banner on hmv.com.

Killzone HD on EU PlayStation Store today

monty2k

6 years ago

@convercide

Yeah, they did. They also used the original higher-res art assets as well. It's much prettier than the original but it's not nearly as good as the God of War or MGS HD remasters.

You can already find some videos on youtube showing gameplay. I'd advise watching them before downloading the game.

Doom 3: BFG Edition review

monty2k

6 years ago

@Obli

This new version has much fewer dynamic light sources. The torch no longer interacts with objects/bodies and cast shadows. I think it's hilarious that the 2012 "remastered" edition misses out some of the features of the original 2004 PC game! Presumably they did this to keep the 60fps frame rate on consoles?

Having said that, I am still gonna rent it in the near future :P

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier DLC Raven Strike announced

It's nice to see a shooter get some single-player DLC for a change rather than endless map packs.

I bought GR:FS in the PSN summer sale and I'm really enjoying it. The single-player is solid, Gunsmith is absolutely awesome and the multiplayer is pretty decent. I've had no problems playing on the PSN apart from the odd host migration.

Sonic, Deus Ex, Velocity launch on EU PlayStation Store

monty2k

@dadrester:

I picked up the PS2 version for 99p in a Blockbuster sale about a year back. It's dated but still pretty good. They didn't cut out any content I think. The only differences, that I noticed, are that it has a really generous auto-aim and some of the larger levels (from the PC version) are broken down into smaller chunks with loading times inbetween.

Starhawk Review

@shiftygamer: Section 8: Prejudice has buildings and vehicles you could call in. That came out about a year ago so Starhawk isn't really ground-breaking in that respect.

I really loved the futurisitc WW2 vibe of Warhawk. Starhawk's fairly generic sci-fi look leaves me a little cold. I'll rent it from Blockbuster and give it a go.

Will Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD have the original soundtrack?

monty2k

@EddieMink:

All Xbox 360 games have custom soundtracks through the 360's music player don't they? You can also plug in an ipod (via USB) and listen to that whilst you play games. I even remember (vaguely) that they added a functionality where custom soundtrack volume lowers during game cut scenes...

GoldenEye 007: Reloaded Review

monty2k

7 years ago

@Darren:

I also lament the absence of splitscreen multiplayer from most modern FPS's so there's no need to be condescending about it.

Problem is that most of my friends are too busy to be playing splitscreen gaming nowadays. We all have girlfriends/wives, jobs and other "real" commitments that mean travelling around to someone's house and getting together for gaming is a rare occurrence. It's so much easier to find a spare hour or two and play online with friends.

Perhaps your social situation is different to mine... I mean I played countless hours of splitscreen Goldeneye/Halo when I was a teenager/student.

@Ultrasoundwave:

Goldeneye had a lot less competition from other FPS titles on the wii than it does on the XBox 360/PS3. Also Goldeneye is a more of a technical accomplishment on the Wii than on the HD consoles. It arguably has some of the best visuals and online capabilities for the Wii whereas it looks distinctly average compared to most 360/PS3 games.

Having said that, I really enjoyed this on the wii and might pick it up or rent it for the PS3. I just hope it has a decent online community. I feel this will be blown away by CoD and Battlefield.

Battlefield 3 Multiplayer

monty2k

7 years ago

@AcidSnake:

The only thing about the damage model I've read is this:

" While destruction isn't at the same level as the Bad Company series, it really varied from map to map and in Grand Bazaar, I appreciated how the main plaza areas became more filled with debris and downed trees as more players started to test out their rocket launchers. A lot of building corners and facades crumble realistically and expose enemy cover as well."

That's from Destructoid's preview: http://www.destructoid.com/preview-battl...

Nice but it's not really complete transparency is it?

a) all the legal documents are in Swedish
b) they're unedited
c) they would use legal jargon that's probably unintelligible unless you're an expert in Swedish trademark law.

I've read some court summaries (specifically the case of Heather Mills McCartney vs Paul McCartney) and it's hard reading even if it's in English and edited down to the essentials.

I loved the Wii version and played a lot of the surprisingly versatile (for the wii) online multiplayer, so I may buy this again.

My only concern is that the game doesn't really have any of the pomp and spectacle that MW3 or Battlefield 3 appear to have. What was fun and retro/nostalgic on the wii might not transfer so well onto the HD consoles.

@Matman562:

I recently bought it for 20 for the 360. The multiplayer is pretty good and probably worth that 18. All the weapons seem pretty balanced, and being able to buy rpgs and anti-tank drones on the fly means you shouldn't have too much bother from vehicles. My only real gripe is that it's a bit pig-ugly on the 360 but it's probably better looking on the PC anyway!

One tip though - avoid the single player. It is short and not very sweet.
