How Amstrad Action changed my life

mingster

I can relate to this on so many levels.

Mainly that i too live in Lewisham borough and suffer panic attacks just thinking about travelling north of the river.

I miss Loot magazine as well as MicroMart. They were my main source of blackmarket computer equipment. (Like nintendo copiers and phone cloning equipment)
Loot would be considered the DarkWeb of the internet now.

At least you didn't get something awful like an MSX, Oric or anything Acorn.

Game Genie declassified: That summer I played 230 Game Boy games

mingster

Great Article..thank you for this little insight into early 90's Uk videogame culture.

I had a Game Genie for my Gameboy.

I also had a Freeze Machine for the C64 and an Action Replay on the Amiga and a Romantic Robots - Multiface for Peek and Poke codes on the Speccy.

I used to love pressing the Break button and searching for my own game cheats by changing Hex Codes or ripping sprites.

This all stood me in good stead to get a job in IT which i still do to this day.

I still have teary eyed Nostalgia for the pre-internet days and kids nowadays have it so easy with gamefaqs and mods and unlimited easy to ways to hack games. It all used to be so much trial and error with nobody to help, but i loved every minute. I used to have to dial into to BBS systems using a 14.4K dialup modem to try and find little nuggets of info on how to hack games.

You are my Hero for creating GameGenie codes, you helped me to complete games that used to be ludicrously difficult. Thank-you.

Dangerous Golf review

First time i've ever disagreed with an EG review.
And the first time i've ever requested a refund of a game from Steam.

This should be an early access game.

I had no sound at all on the PC version.

Controls leave a lot to be desired.

This isn't anywhere near as good as burnouts crash mode which is what i wanted.

You sure it was a battleship you made? Sounds more like you got to destroyer level tech 2 tops. If you had enough to make battleships you'd be holding off pirates and have advanced food labs to stop starvation plus at least 5 planets under your belt. And any planets you have you can upgrade their tiles heavily with research so i've never found a duff planet yet, you research tech to clear tiles. The hard part is getting aliens to declare war on you in the first place the AI is very passive.

Ways to annoy invaders:
Use a branch item and blend into the scenery. Watch the invader run past you looking for you.
Use a giant seed: Turn the AI against the invader.
Use an item that blocks estus recovery stopping invader from healing.
Belong to blue covenant: Auto summons extra help when invaded.
use dried fingers allowing an extra phantom to be summoned.
Basically odds are against you if you invade people.

Remember when Dungeon Keeper was good?

mingster

Dungeon Keeper was technically amazing. The ability to jump into a minion and see through its eyes was impressive. Magic Carpet too was a great game. Muliplayer and clever AI. Syndicate although stylish i never thought was as great, some missions were infuriatingly difficult to complete.

I bought it for 21 on steam. I've racked up 6 hours so far and am getting more into it as i unlock more ships in CS mode. If you can find it for sale its definately worth getting. I can even play 2 player by myself controlling both ships at the same time in EX mode using a PS4 pad.

I was using a custom control mapping for my joypad on PC and the buggy didn't have controls mapped by default. I swapped back to a default joypad config that's built into the game and my buggy controls ok now. It's a bit weird but I presume that's a gravity thing. And I had difficulty finding the landing pad back in base where I parked my ship. Was easier to blow up the buggy and reset back in ship. I never really wanted planetary landing but it's nice it's included. What I want is for ships to be cheaper and more variety and weapons and upgrades.

Q*Bert Rebooted review

mingster

@ozzzy189 "This is one of those reviews where I really just wanted to scroll down to the bottom of the page and read the score"

Completely agree with you. Qbert has always been a quick throwaway arcade game. It has no back story it is a high score chaser. Way should i spend longer reading a review then it actually takes to play the game?

@TarickStonefire
Maybe your right.

I have visited this site all day long every day for 12 years and that was my regime. It is a change and one i don't like. But until they decide it was a mistake there is nothing i can do except express my opinion that it was a wrong move.

You have only been here getting on for 4 years so its not an entrenched part of your daily routine and you can except the change.

I'm not ready to give up yet that reading a tagline and guessing the score is never going to be a thing again.

I' not confused at all. I have been reading Eurogamer for 12 years.
The review system has only changed in the last month.
I don't like how it is now.
I liked how it was for the last 12 years i have been reading them.

Trying to guess the score from the front page strapline, under the game name is now impossible.
I was guessing '@!#?@!' equalled a 3. Now i will never know.
This was the whole point of Eurogamer.
Guess the score from the strapline, then scroll to the bottom of the review and check.
I have played this game for nearly 12 years and yo've completely ruined it now.
Bring back scores... PLEASE.
