Nintendo Switch won't use StreetPass or Miiverse

markyHD

@OnlyJoeKing

Agree with Joe here purely based off of my experience with Nintendo products.

Still have a working Wii, 3ds, Wii U, friend has launch model N64 and Snes, never replaced any of them. And never had a controller fail (PS4 thumb sticks, I'm looking at you!), my Wii controllers have been flung all over the show by the kids and family for 11 years and still work and look great. Sometimes the slightly cheaper aproach is just false economy

DICE wants Battlefield 4 players to help build a new map

markyHD

3 years ago

I'm still really enjoying BF4 and can't get that experience anywhere else.

I appreciate the frustration with netcode, and even now on some 64 player servers I rubber band, bug this was the case on PC back in 1942. So it begs the question as to how much netcode can really be held to account when 64 different connections need to be decent if there's a hope in hell of it being smooth.

For me only DICE continue to attempt to successfully provide smooth, large scale battle. They may never fully succeed, but I will continue to buy their games as long as they keep trying.

WW2 again next please, El Alamein!!! 😃

Ubisoft delays Assassin's Creed: Unity's next major patch

markyHD

@captain-b

Glad it isn't just me. Something definitely feels off. It's like he's been almost slightly speeded up in everything he does. Erratic is the perfect description.

Also, the frame rate is worse from what I can gather, particularly around Cafe Thetre.

What on earth are they doing???

EDIT -- actually frame rate is better, but still has noticeable dips in areas where there are lots of mission icons/indicators. The lighting looks different to me as well. As if the realistic volumetric affect has been paired back. Building surfaced don't shimmer and react to the light like I remember.

The bonkers ads of PlayStation

markyHD

3 years ago

I recall trying to decide on either buying a ps1 or sega Saturn for 300 or 400 respectively from beatties (blast from the past eh?). Daytona was great and is played a lot of it in the arcade, as well as virtua fighter, but man......dat wipeout!!!!!

Went with ps1 and its the only console to truly deliver for me. Bring back arena destruction derby!!!

Amazing the influence marketing has but part of my decision was that it just felt cooler...

Assassin's Creed Unity patch analysed

markyHD

3 years ago

@DIgital Foundry

The coop missions only interface with servers when you begin them. The stuff I believe was messing up the FPS more for some than others looked to have been related to the nomad/companion content. For example when I was playing I had my iPad connected for the map, and it interfaces between iPad and ps4 every 5 seconds to keep your live position on the map. And with "driveclub like" servers for the first week or so, it amplified the issue.

So the reality is there were some of us getting much worse than what you are reporting. Now after patch 3 we're getting the same 25-30fps as you are. Bitter sweet nevertheless :)

But it puts into perspective their comment that this isn't the performance patch, however those using all of the features if you like, may notice a smoother time. And I for one do.

Sure it isn't Dizzy, how about this?

And the first was a screen from Richards video btw....hardly trolling when referencing the source material

All I was saying earlier before being down voted is that Richard chose desert pics to demonstrate minor differences. But they are sparse anyway. In greener areas, it's hardly minor, as seen above.

It's selective commentary and isn't objective for a professional.
27 6

markyHD

3 years ago

Good article but minor point.

The foliage difference doesn't appear major in the shots you present because for some reason you chose to use a desert area which artistically is intended to be paired back in foliage.
When you get in to the dense greener areas outside the City (like the big mountain sides) the difference is massive.

Why haven't you demonstrated the platform variations at their worst?

@rudedudejude

It's always going to be one or the other though. For the majority of games the greater emphasis on GPU makes sense. Think GT6, Uncharted 4, FIFA etc, none being particularly CPU bound I imagine.

It's the open world games and MMO type games were going to notice it. And perhaps that's because those experiences are now more likely to see the light of day with the extra RAM and large HD's.

Performance Analysis: Grand Theft Auto 5

markyHD

3 years ago

@Philip45

What Richard fails to mention is that if you slow down or stop in that location the frame rate jumps to 30 fps. A transient drop in frame rate doesn't suggest a CPU or GPU bottleneck unless you are thinking along the lines of the AC Unity instruction queue issue.

It's much more likely to be related to asset streaming. I appreciate that he tried a SSD but the disc is still involved in streaming assets. Are the read speeds of the Blu Ray drives equivalent?

Is the memory profile for each game the same, or is one platform afforded a few extra hundred MB of RAM?

I drove around the city at night on a bike St full pelt, and all over the countryside, and I didn't see a single drop. Is it related to a particular time of day?

Do some real analysis please Richard

Video: The Elder Scrolls Online live stream

markyHD

4 years ago

@Confucius

I bought it on a whim and it really has had me hooked. If you go into it expecting Skyrim rather than WoW then it makes more sense.

I think it has less mass market appeal as its more Game of Thrones/LoTR in its themes, so naturally more adult (with a palette to match), but really some of the graphics are fantastic, I suspect most people commenting on it looking bland are viewing a small set of screens over and over.

As I said, the game doesn't really resemble a typical MMO, and in my opinion its all the better for it. I don't have time to keep up with RAIDs and guilds etc etc, so for me the ability to play a game that is heavily quest focussed, at my own pace, whilst still being full online, is perfect!

Spot on. Not sure why people think looking down quickly is such an issue.

One thing I do wonder though, is how long the battery life will be if it is essentially always on in every game (i.e. if the screen is constantly on showing a map, surely we're only looking at 5-8 hours maximum).

Sony: US Vita launch met with "overwhelming enthusiasm"

markyHD

Surely when the system launches is the most important factor. Didn't the original PSP launch around christmas time?

These stories frustrate me sometimes, because the PS3 started this way, and now look at it. Surely any new console starts slow and gains momentum?

As long as it gets good support and has a 5 - 8 year cycle, isn't that what matters?

Tech Analysis: Uncharted: Golden Abyss

markyHD

6 years ago

I'm not a mobile gamer, assuming by mobile you mean gaming whilst on the go, but i'll surely be picking one of these up (only got a 3DS last week so not yet lol!).

I'm glad some games are coming out with the breadth of experience of a console, because some of us consider handhelds useful for things like TheNonk describes, or lying in bed having a quick go before you go to sleep.

I don't really get the "but it's supposed to be short-quick on the go gameplay" argument, surely the entire purpose of a portable playstation is that you take those same experiences with you, to a hotel, abroad, mates house, whatever.
