Nintendo's precarious reveal runs risk of Switching off fans

laurence83

The battery life doesn't bother me too much. Most long haul flights I am not now have USB charger points. However, a >200 price point means it won't be picked up by me. If we are going to compare this to the Wii launch (because who cares about the Wii U anyway), I could justify buying it because the price was low, and Mario Galaxy and Zelda made it worth it. Resident Evil 4 and a few other gems certainly helped as well.

Sony plays down PS4 Pro's lack of 4K Blu-ray disc support

laurence83

Although broadband speeds are only improving slowly in some areas, the necessity to make it faster will only be made more important by increased demand on the system. More streaming and less physical media is where we are all heading. Given the cost of the R&D and manufacturing on devices that read physical discs, no wonder SONY want to leave it behind

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim remaster announced

laurence83

I missed out on Skyrim the first time around. Just was really busy when it came out and then never had chance to go back. I think it's a huge benefit to remaster these kind of games, as there has not been an advance in the complexity of games in the last few years (certainly from GTAV). Therefore, just continue to remake the best games from the last 10 years prettier, and do some ironing around the edges, and that's fine by me.

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue out in December

laurence83

This is such a mess I am glad I got out of the series after the first game. It seems to me in 10 years when all this mess is over, they can release one complete game which offers the complete story, with the important bits of this 2.8, 1.5, "chain of memories" chaff.

I tried playing the original so many times but it never managed to hold my interest beyond the Ogir-Yensa Sandsea. Given modern gaming now has even further eroded my patience, I hope it is remade with more hooks to hold my interest, as I would really like to finish the game one day.

GAME-exclusive Batman: Arkham Knight Red Hood DLC gameplay

laurence83

@Ajent It's nice you can trust a product enough to be able to pre-order. I think I've just become too old and jaded to really believe hype before something has been reviewed by many people. Therefore, I shouldn't complain about what companies do with pre-orders, because realistically, it's never going to affect me. I'm sure if GAME could have their way, you would only be able to buy the it in their stores.
4 0

laurence83

@Ajent Well put. The psychology of this is pretty clear. Each outlet wants to increase its number of pre-orders as they can forecast their business with better accuracy. Publishers want to increase pre-orders for similar reasons. Therefore, make people who would buy on day 1 anyway feel like they are getting a "present" for doing so at a particular place. I guess my question goes to people who do this is are these free bits of the game that ultimately can do nothing important really worth it, considering you have no idea how good the game is going to be?
1 0

laurence83

This is going to keep on happening until people stop pre-ordering games. What are you worried about? That they are going to run out of copies on day 1 and you wont be able to put spoilers on Twitter? Makes much more sense to me to just delay playing the game completely for 3 months and get it for half the price.

I blame Peter Jackson for creating 3 over-long movies, and TT for releasing the game before the trilogy completed. Considering the game came out so long before the 3rd movie, it was always going to be a difficult sell for players to buy DLC over a year after release. Playing through it now on PS4 and really annoyed how the story finished...

Zavvi threatens customers with legal action after accidentally sending free Vitas

You would think they would try and remedy the situation with a free gift to say thanks. Obviously most people who bought this have a PSVITA already so probably aren't that interested in a 2nd. It seems like an honest mistake. Surely, it would be easier for Zavvi just to say if you send it back, we'll give you the choice of a number of games to pick for free to say thanks. Not, "Shit, we made a mistake. Make it good or we'll sue!"

To be honest, if someone told me to buy one of the three consoles right now for the games they have on them, I would buy a Wii U for Mario and Zelda. If only Nintendo could keep on producing this quality of games every few months, whereas you know after Kart and Brawl, it's pretty much all over.

Sony explains PS4 digital game pricing

laurence83

The issue is that there is no online competition on PSN or XBL. Wasn't there news that Amazon would have a store for PS digital content? This might help matters. What would be interesting to know is if SONY's cut of the price was the same no matter where the game is bought. If it is, they probably wouldn't want to piss off retail until their slow death has occured in 10 years from now.

Microsoft confirms Xbox One apps for launch

laurence83

I think the issue with all the consoles is they are not offering an app store which people can write their own apps for. With proper app developer tools, there would have been loads of cool programs you could download and run which could do all kinds of great things. With the next Xbox having an HDMI pass-through, you could just imagine all the things that could be done with that information as well. Unfortunately, we have this walled garden approach to both consoles, which I think just limits them so much.

I just hope SteamOS comes through and really pushes us forward. I don't see anything in the next consoles which looks like it will.

Next free Xbox 360 Games with Gold titles announced

laurence83

These games remind me of when XBL went down after the Christmas of 2008 for a week or so, and everyone got undertow. Literally every thing they ever give away for free seems either a way for you to buy into a franchise that has a game coming out, or just the cheapest thing going. Lets hope the new generation really levels the playing field. However, I suspect that SONY will continue to make online infrastructure mistakes like it has this generation, and MS will continue to have a policy of the most blatant attempts to milk my wallet I have ever seen. I think I'm heading more and more towards Steam.

Microsoft: Xbox 360 will last three more years

laurence83

I think if they expect their console to last so long, the business model that makes most sense to me is to sell loads at a heavy loss, and make it back over the following years with XBLG and game sales. If they don't sell it a lot cheaper than 430, I expect there to be a really long tail on 360 and PS3 sales, as many people just won't be bothered with upgrading at that cost.

Where are the Xbox One role-playing games?

laurence83

@bldudas What are you considering the main classification of an RPG? Turn-based action or/and character skill levelisation? I do accept that western RPGs are more action orientated. However, I really see turn-based RPGs and real-time action RPGs as perhaps two different types of game.

It's not like PS4 is any better. It only took about 6 months for Oblivion to come out on the 360, which was probably one of it's best RPGs for several years. Probably that will be around the timespan it takes for me to decide which one I'm going to buy anyway.

The most popular arguments in favour of Xbox One DRM

laurence83

@xuiton OK, but how many games that only have 10 hours to them, are traded in, and so cost the buyer around 10
0 0

laurence83

Main issue with DRM and games is that games are too expensive to be considered throw-away purchases like music and films. Definitely need to have a sliding scale so consumers dont feel like they are getting screwed eg:
- First 2 hours free with XBL gold or PSN+
- Next 10 hours are 10-15
- Anything more is full retail price (whatever that may be)

I would pay a tenner to dive into a game for 10 hours to see if it's worth more of my time.... If it's not, I don't feel that bad "losing" the money

Microsoft restores game ownership and expects us to smile

laurence83

Hopefully, this will lead to getting the best of both worlds. If you want to buy a physical disc, you can lend it to anyone, and do what you want in terms of reselling. If you want to buy it digitally, you can access it from your account on any xbox.

Personally, until someone comes up with a reason for buying into next gen other than prettier graphics and better physics, I'm sticking with the 360 (Honestly, my next console is probably a PS3 to catch up with this generation's great games I've missed out on). GTA V is what I'm looking forward to this year.

Sony: PlayStation 4 will not restrict used games or force you to connect your console online

laurence83

Well, I didn't see that happening. Props to Sony. However, what I don't understand is why Microsoft has implemented the DRM system, when Sony hasn't. Surely this was all publisher led (I never believed MS were doing it out of choice).

So, very interesting what happens now. Personally, I find most Xbox players I know don't play used games or trade in, so they will probably still go buy a new Xbox. However, this really does set the two consoles apart in their focus.

I'll wait for 6-12 months after launch (because there's plenty yet to play on the current gen), to make my decision, but this will dramatically change the outlook of both consoles.

I love the fact that as soon as this console is out, and the initial wrinkles are ironed out, no one will give a damn about all these. Just like no one cares about iTunes now.

@grassyknoll Does anyone keep count on used game sales? Obviously the publishers do, and if they see an chance to take a slice of the pie they will. Sorry that disadvantages you. Real gamers are what make this industry great. However, it all just comes down to money in the end.
2 5

laurence83

@gr8effect Sure I'll accept it. Regardless of what we think here, 95% of FIFA and COD players don't read these websites, or complain on twitter, or trade in their games.
