Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy Review

Final Fantasy may be a series filled with heroes, but not one has ever wielded a guitar.

Soulcalibur 5 newcomer Xiba unveiled

Yeah, Cervantes looks more alive than ever. And Aeon who? You mean Lizardman with wings? Also, judging by the character art Xiba seems to be Namco's take on Sun Wukong / Monkey King.

Final Fantasy 13-2 Preview

At the risk of sounding like a broken record; World map with bloody airships!! Come one, Square-enix, it's not difficult!!
That, with cherries on top. Also, (side-)quests that don't involve killing something.

On the other hand, everybody loved the Bluffer's Guides to [console] Cult Classics. Why not do more of that? I'm sure that this far into the current generation there's a bunch of great stuff people might have missed.

Anderson: directors don't know games

I am not ashamed to admit that I enjoyed both the Resident Evil and Tomb Raider film. The respective sequels, however, were complete arse... out of which Anderson is talking.

Ivy is getting more and more ridiculous with each new game; I do like her fighting style though. Emo Belmont and Shiny Ninja... mmh, will have to see them in action before I make up my mind.

Street Fighter III dated for PSN, XBLA

itamae

I'm looking forward to crying with frustration again when my Q/Hugo runs into the tenth Chun-Li in a row. Fantastic game, but some match-ups are just a cruel uphill battle. Still more fun than SF4 though.

Footnote: Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike has not yet been dated, but is due to be released on PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Got a news tip?"

Yes. Check the headline.

Edit: I see this has already been fixed. Thanks guys!

Ouch! The previews didn't exactly sound promising, but I wasn't expecting it to be this terrible. :-D

Truth be told though, 15 years ago I probably would have found the game hilarious, and the characters attractive. Alas, age sucks all the joy out of life...

MVC3 is no place for cheats

itamae

About time they implemented something like this. I'd actually go one step further and mark every new match as lost until you actually complete it (and change it to 'not played' if the opponent drops out of course). That way people at least won't quit to preserve their precious win record. And although I'm sorry for people with bad ISPs, if your connection craps out on a regular basis you really shouldn't be playing competitive online games.

Why I Hate... Final Fantasy

itamae

Up until a few years ago I would have vehemently disagreed with this article and defended Final Fantasy with near-religious fervour. But after the disappointments that were FF X, XI, XII, and XIII I'm inclined to agree with everything I've just read.

By the way, XIII does not miraculously get good after twenty hours, it just gets a little bit less bad.

Also, you guys need to read up on the infamous Donkey Kong kill screen. The problem is getting the top score before you run out of game, hence the incremental advances.

XBL sees audience bump for TV/movies

I don't know about the UK, but Netflix is pretty awesome. $9 a month and I can watch as much as I want. Includes unlimited DVD rentals, too, but streaming is so much more convenient (although the catalogue of available titles is a lot more limited).

Retrospective: Mario Golf Advance Tour

itamae

I prefer the first Gameboy (Mario) Golf over this one. The RPG elements felt a bit cumbersome for a portable title, and in my opinion the courses in the original were just perfect. Everybody's Golf 1/2 on the PSP is easily better than either of them, though.

XBLA a "slaughterhouse" for small devs

itamae

Murray's figures showed that 47 per cent of XBLA games sold less than 25,000 copies, 23 per cent sold around 100,000 copies, 13 per cent 200,000 copies and 17 per cent over 200,000 copies.

So... that leaves an amazing 0% of games that sell between 25k and "around 100k" copies, or am I missing something?

Retrospective: Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders

itamae

Zak McKracken would be my favourite Lucasfilm game (that honour goes to Maniac Mansion) if it wasn't for those bloody mazes and the fact that you can run out of money halfway through. Yes some of the puzzles can be a bit obscure (the secret code for the Martian pyramid had me stuck for ages), but pretty much all of the problems can be solved with a solid dose of out-of-the-box thinking and a bit of trial-and-error.

The lack of a "look at" command doesn't bother me at all, either. Remember that the game came out at a time when people had grown up with text adventures, in which you spent half of the time typing "l/x {item}" to feel around the game world. Maniac Mansion was one of the first games to place everything you needed to know right there in front of you, on the screen. So in that regard being able to examine things would have been a step backwards. I know Lucasfilm used the item descriptions mostly for additional gags, but personally I prefer the WYSIWYG approach of their first adventures, and the pure situation comedy that arose from using objects in unexpected ways.

Great retrospective for a great game. I fondly remember giving impromptu concerts at random street corners, dual-wielding trees, and reading about my latest exploits in the local newspaper. A true classic. Shame about the horrendous loading times and the terrible midi samples though...

Got a regular edition stick on pre-order; while I'd love to get the TE I'm simply not good enough at fighting games to do it justice. Let's see how it compares to my Hori EX2.

Virtual Console Roundup

itamae

I'm relatively sure a lot of the games on the Virtual Console have lost their Patent by now, making them liable to be downloaded and played for free, without breaking the law.

A) You're thinking of copyright and B) you'd be amazed how long that lasts. Rule of thumb: if a game has ever seen a commercial release at any point in time, someone out there holds the copyright and could potentially kick your rear end for copying his software.

With that in mind, feel free to choose whichever score best suits your gaming memories. And then leave me alone.

3/10 or 10/10

Funnily enough, LN3 is by far the worst game in the series, and at least in my opinion the music and graphics aren't as good as in the previous two. So this time I actually agree with the 3/10. :-)
