F1 2012 Preview: Staying on Track

gingerlink

Bought F1 2010 and 2011 on 360, but this doesn't sound like enough to warrant another purchase (especially with the shakey bug record of the previous two).

Might be tempted if it comes out for Wii U though...

Codemasters unveils F1 2012

gingerlink

I think there's little to be excited about, as much as I enjoy the games, I'm not convinced I can be persuaded to get another when I've still got so much to do on 2011 (and maybe I'm just bitter my wheel is still broken).

Might hold out for a Wii U version though, that could be rather good.

@snick I'd already done that and it doesn't help at all, there needs to be a deadzone in the middle so at least if you miss you have a split second to slide your finger instead of veering in the wrong direction.

Something actually about the game:
I don't know whether its because I have fat fingers (I don't consider them to be very fat), but I had an absolutely chronic problem with steering in the wrong direction in this game as the other direction than the one I wanted triggered.

It's probably more a reflection on the touch screen as an input device more than anything else...

FortressCraft creator rejects Minecraft clone claims

gingerlink

"What more do you need, a gun that fires shurikens and lighting?"

Claims he doesn't copy minecraft, but steals a joke almost word-for-word from yahtzee.

ETA: The only thing that actually bugs me is that in some interviews he refuses to acknowledge that he did essentially start off with making Minecraft on the Xbox360, while in other interviews he pretty much states this.

The minecraft 'clones' on Xbox all have their own unique features, I don't think any of them are clones on the same level as some other things that have been going on recently.

Notch himself is very supportive of this, so can't we get some attention on the people who aren't able to afford private jets?

Mario & Sonic London 2012 Olympics trailer

gingerlink

If I was a betting person, I still think this is worth a punt as Christmas number 1 given that it's 100-1 (or whichever way around it is).

Not that I want to encourage the mini-game compilations, but its probably more likely than Skyward Sword getting it.

Modern Warfare favourite for Christmas #1

gingerlink

Given that this is for the week of Christmas, MW3 might not be so much of a shoe-in. A significant number of MW3 sales will come from pre-orders and over a month after release, sales may well have died down. Of course, this is ignoring the information of the previous two years.

And while I don't want to encourage it to do well, I think those are pretty damn good odds on Mario & Sonic given the performance of the original.

New Wii loses backwards compatibility

gingerlink

I think anyone hoping for a GC compatible Wii U was dreaming a bit too much. No console or handheld has been backwards compatible with hard media for two generations.

This, however, does seem like a bit of a shambles. If Nintendo get rid of the old design and seemlessly replace it with this one at about the same price, they might be OK, but otherwise this'll just create a lot of confusion.

At the very least, this may mean we see a redesigned classic controller for the Wii U

Codemasters announces new F1 game

gingerlink

It's more principle, if I buy a game I feel like I'm paying for all of the code, art assets, music etc. that was put into it. If I'm paying a microtransaction I'm paying for either a small programmatic number increase somewhere on the system or something that probably took a designer about 1 hour, compared to the serious amount of work put into the game.

I know that ultimately its the same money going to the same place, but the principle just seems wrong to me.

Obviously, the way that a lot of developers go about it doesn't help either and its very difficult to balance a system so that the best players aren't those with the deepest wallets.

gingerlink

These days free to play means the main game is free, but there are microtransactions. If that's not the case here, it'll either have ads or act as heavy advertisment for F1 2011/F1 2012

To be honest, free to play doesn't work for me. I'd be happy to buy a proper game and pay developers for their work, but I basically flat out refuse to pay microtransactions...

Nintendo to offer free Zelda tickets

gingerlink

While blame rests on Nintendo for this particular bit of confusion, I'm very annoyed about the ticketmaster site, as it originally told that all of the cheaper stalls seating had been sold out. As a result, I was forced to have to go with the more expensive circle seating and from the looks of this map, it didn't even give me the best it could've done with that!

F1 2011 release date announced

gingerlink

Given that they'll be building on the old engine, they're less likely to be pushed to releasing a game with such bugs intact.

I'm very interested to know what they add, absolutely loved (and still am loving) F1 2010, but won't be getting 2011 if it's basically a roster update. Here's hoping for better damage physics, real time wreck removal with safety cars (yes I'm a nut) and a less hyperactive weather system.

The thing is, customization of controls isn't any harder on consoles than it is on PCs, it's just that people have far more varying playstyles with PC gaming, where as in console games, a lot of control schemes are fairly universal.

(If you actually program for it in the first place, it's easy to customize controls, but it's actually quite hard if you haven't done it from the start)
