Lumines is returning with series producer Mizuguchi at the helm

frou

There already was an official iOS release of Lumines. It had a passable number of included skins and 2 paid DLC packs. Seems to be pulled from the App Store now.

@uiruki That's your problem. I found the touch controls to work surprisingly well and this is from someone who was super into high scoring on the original PSP game.

Current-gen PSN games won't transfer to PS4

@javvyman

What happens if you don't have a PS3 to play your games on 5 years down the line.
You stroll to the nearest car boot sale and buy one out of a bucket.

Millions of PS3 are going to be active for a long time so I really doubt it's in Sony's interests either financially or PR-wise to switch off the PS3-accessible PSN servers.

DirectX 11.1 exclusive to Windows 8, Microsoft confirms

frou

All the threats to abandon Windows for the Linux panacea strike me as a bit naive. If you actually follow through, you'll find that desktop Linux has plenty of its own issues with churn and sub-par UI. And to wrap up the big 3, Mac OS X's problem is that gaming-class hardware either isn't available or has a big markup on it.

When will OnLive have no latency?

frou

When I gave OnLive a try on my low latency 50Mb cable connection, both the image quality and the responsiveness were still unacceptably bad.

Honestly I don't think the service is ever likely to catch on with geeky types who are even slightly fussy about their game experience.

The fact that the better-seeming games don't make meaningful use of the gamepad DOES seem like a fairly big issue to me. If the system simply ends up as a "Wii HD" then that's about as conservative and innovation-lacking as is possible.

Smash Cops Review

frou

I completely disagree with the review stating that unlocking the alternate vehicles is "painfully slow". I bought the game this morning, did all the levels, and unlocked all 4 extra vehicles before lunch. The Super Cop power-ups are thin on the ground, but of the 5 or so I used, I couldn't even tell what difference they make apart from giving your car a red paint-job.

Maybe it's easier on the iPad, but I felt no need to spent any extra money on the in-game-puchases. This is not a game to blast for IGPs, since all they are are completely optional "cheats", not fenced off content.

On the whole it's a very short game that's fairly easy once you get your smashing tactics down. The minority of missions that are about avoiding things (cones, friendly cars) are noticeably harder due to the twitchy steering. I agree about the buddy cop cars being annoying. They seldom do anything useful, and often spoil your mission by getting in the way.

6/10 seems about right. Maybe a 7 due to the top quality presentation.

Finally, two design howlers I noticed were:

 It's apparently not possible to get 5/5 stars on the missions where you're being chased unless you deliberately let your pursuers catch up and get in to some crashes with them. To be fair, you can do a quick 180 spin to bash them head on.

 If you run out of time just before reaching a checkpoint, but your momentum carries you over, it not only fails you your mission, but also still plays the checkpoint reached sound!

@rauper Thanks. Another thing I notice is that the font seems to override the system's anti-aliasing technique. i.e. if I zoom in on a word, the anti-aliasing around the letters is greyscale, whereas all other sites and everything else on my system uses nice coloured sub-pixel anti-aliasing.

I hope you don't mind such nit-picking. Even great things can benefit from that last 5% :)

Cool.

I think it's a mistake to think that wide screens = wide browsers. I have a 1920 wide screen, yet I keep the browser ~1024 wide, since a huge wide window is crap for reading. This also lets me have another application window side by side. I'm glad Portable mode is there.

BUG?: If you load a new page and scroll using the PageUp/PageDown keys rather than the mouse, the page flashes black.
